69. Chapter Sixty-Nine

Chapter sixty-nine

Peter

I loved watching Adair bloom and become more confident in herself while helping prep for the twins’ birthday party.

She was smiling more, laughing more, and genuinely looked happier.

Everyone in the house, including Lukas and Quinn, was also lighter and happier in general, which made me let out a breath of relief. Everyone needed this.

My relationship with Adair was also progressing.

My favorite part of the day was when she curled up next to me in bed, rested her head on my chest, and I ran my fingers through her hair.

It was comforting, relaxing, and made me feel complete.

I hadn't thought anything was missing from my life, but adding Adair made everything better.

Like I'd told her, I was in no rush and she dictated the speed we moved forward. She’d surprised me when she snuggled up with me on the couch one night while we were hanging out in the living room with Lukas.

She had shifted down and was asleep, using my leg as a pillow, when Connor came in.

His attention went right to where she was laying before his gaze met mine, barely containing his intrigue as his eyes glittered with humor.

Shifting his focus back to Lukas, he let him know Quinn needed him.

After he left the room, Connor sat across from me, smirking.

“Well, someone had a conversation since you and I chatted.”

I chuckled at Connor’s comment. “Yeah, I did.”

“Glad you finally admitted it.”

I nodded as I ran my fingers through her hair again. A motion I found soothing. “Yeah. Me, too. I’m still stunned she made the first move.”

He let out an approved hum. “I knew I liked her. Well, welcome to the chaos.”

I turned and narrowed my eyes at him. “Thanks?”

Connor smirked at me. “You’ll see. But in all seriousness, I’m happy for both of you.”

I watched as he strode out and when it was just us in the room, leaned my head back, and let out a long breath. Things certainly had changed a lot in the last couple of years.

My phone buzzed, pulling me from my thoughts, and I grinned when I saw my sister’s name on the screen.

Violet:

I chuckled as I replied to her.

Peter:

Violet:

I glanced down at the woman who had become as important to me as my sister.

Peter:

I also got a girlfriend that I don't know if I'm allowed to tell you about or not.

I glanced down at Adair and smiled. If her life and safety weren’t on the line, I'd tell anyone who’d listen that I was dating the most amazing woman.

Violet:

I yawned and gently rubbed Adair's shoulder, grinning when she let out a sleepy whine.

“I was sleeping.”

“I know, but we should probably do that in our bed and not in the living room.”

She sat up, blinking the sleep from her eyes. “You and your logic.”

I reached over and caressed the side of her face, falling for her a little more as she leaned into my touch. “We both need to get our beauty sleep before the party tomorrow.”

Adair chuckled as she looked at me. “You worried you’re somehow going to be less cute if you lose a few winks?”

“Listen, I want to make sure your arm candy stays pretty.”

She rolled her eyes and stood, holding out her hand to me. “Well, I have no worries about your good looks going anywhere, but if it makes you feel better, I'm more than happy to tuck you in.”

The next day I was in the war room with Ryan and Gage, prepping for whatever the otters had planned while they were upstairs, decorating.

“Do you know why they need the room?”

Gage looked at Ryan and shook his head. “No. Sunny has been suspiciously quiet about the entire thing. Ellen hasn’t mentioned anything to you?”

“Nope.” Ryan looked at me as I handed him one of the laptops. “Did Adair say anything to you?”

I nodded. “Yeah. She filled me in this morning.”

It was comical the way Ryan and Gage’s mouths fell open in shock.

“What?”

“How do you get to know?”

“Because he gives fantastic hugs.”

All three of us turned to see Adair leaning in the doorway, arms crossed over her chest.

She chuckled. “Can I steal Peter for a bit, or do you need him still?”

Gage nodded. “He’s all yours, Adair. Ryan and I have this.”

Her face lit up with a bright smile. “I was hoping that was the case.”

I walked over, slightly confused. “I’d ask if everything was okay, but you look really happy.”

“I am. Let’s go.” Adair grabbed my hand and practically dragged me upstairs and to our room, stopping just outside the door. “I hope you like this.”

The sudden anxiety that flooded her eyes made me pull her in for a hug and a quick kiss. “I’m sure I'll love it.”

She leaned against me for a moment before leaning back and opening the door. “Ta da!”

I walked in and looked around. Everything was the same, except for the desk, which had been cleared off and was now filled with several plates of sushi rolls.

“What is all this?”

“Our sushi date!”

Overwhelmed by her thoughtfulness, I turned Adair and pushed her against the closed door, kissing her until we were both breathless. "Thank you. It's perfect." When all she did was look at me with a dazed smile, I kissed her forehead. “Come on, Hummingbird. Let's eat.”
