Chapter 20 #2
I give her a nod because my voice is having a hard time functioning.
“How’s Sutton?” I hear a concerned Havoc ask. God, I didn’t even think about how Sutton was doing. If it wasn’t for her we’d never have been able to get to them so fast. Or at all.
Turning to Havoc, Melissa offers a sweet smile.
“Sutton is in and out of consciousness, which is to be expected, but she’s good. She’s in a bit of shock, a little banged up and is slightly hypothermic, but she’ll be just fine in a few hours. She wanted to know where Raegan was, but I was going to let one of you tell her.”
“Thanks, Melissa,” I say, finding my voice. “Can I see Sutton and Raegan before her surgery?” I ask. We need to find out who did this and level them. I have a pretty good idea, but I want confirmation before I put a bullet between their eyes.
“Yes, but only two of you. We don’t want to overwhelm them. Also, just to prepare you, we need to get into contact with Raegan’s next of kin. I know she’s estranged from her mother, so we’ll need to speak with her father, if possible.”
“I’ll make any decisions Raegan needs, Melissa. I’m her person,” I growl. No way am I letting anyone else make decisions on her life. She’s mine!
“Kane, that’s not how this works. You and Raegan aren’t married and so that means you have no say in any decisions. I’m sorry, but that’s the law and completely out of my hands. If I’m unable to reach her father then I’m going to have to contact her mother.”
What the fuck? A fucking piece of paper is standing in the way of me and my woman? What if her dad wants to pull the plug on her or take her to another hospital back in Seattle, where he’s from? Away from me?
Fuck that! We’ll be rectifying that shit as soon as she is out of this hellhole. No one but me is going to make those decisions.
Melissa leaves and I turn back to Hawk.
“Get me the number to Raegan’s Dad. He lives in Seattle.”
“Already on it,” Hawk quips handing me a phone. It rings three times then I hear a gruff voice.
“Hello?”
“Mr. Walker, this is Kane Stonewall, Raegan’s boyfriend…”
* * *
Havoc and I walk down the corridors of the hospital and find Sutton’s room first. It’s white and small, the bed’s in the center with monitors on either side.
She is wrapped in several heavy blankets and is slightly propped up.
The lights are low and her eyes are closed, but you can tell she’s restless.
“Baby,” Havoc pulls her hand into his and kisses it.
I’m definitely going to have to have a conversation with him about what’s going on with them.
Sutton is turning out to be Raegan’s best friend, and I can’t have him screwing this up because he wants pussy or whatever it is he’s after.
Shaking those thoughts and focusing on the task at hand, I pull up a chair and sit on the opposite side of the bed.
“Beckett?”
“Yeah, angel, I’m here.”
“Oh, Beckett, I was so scared,” She starts to whimper and he pulls her close in a tight embrace. “Raegan, how’s Raegan?”
“Shh, you’re safe now.” He rocks her for a minute and then pulls back. “Raegan is having surgery to remove a bullet. She’ll be fine; we both know she’s too stubborn to die on us.” We all slightly chuckle at that. “Baby, we need to know what happened and who did this.”
She nods her head and then wipes her eyes. She sets her face in a serious look, thinking for a moment.
“We went racing. After Raegan won, this group of four guys came over and wanted to take her. They were bragging about someone important wanting to speak with her. Trick stepped in but got stabbed, then Raegan drew a gun from her waistband, like some undercover spy, and shot the guy. Dead! We heard the sirens and everyone fled. We helped get Trick in the car and were on our way to the clubhouse when bullets started flying and hitting the car. Raegan lost control, and we sailed over the bridge.”
“Do you know who the guys were? Have you seen them before?” I question hoping that maybe she recognized them from the carnival or when she and Raegan have been out around town.
“Not that I can remember. It all happened so fast, but the main one had a snake tattoo on his neck. They called him…” She’s trying really hard to remember the name, and I know after the evening she’s had, it’s all probably jumbled. “Bryan… Brant… Brandon…”
“Brock?”
“Yes! They called him Brock.”
That piece of shit just signed his death warrant. I had a feeling that the Vipers were involved in this, but this is all the confirmation I needed.
The need to see Raegan is weighing on me, but when we went to see her before Sutton they said to give them a few more minutes.
I leave those two to have some private time and make my way down the hall to where Raegan is being prepped for surgery.
I wanted to be alone with her and have these few minutes before we are separated again.
I don’t care if they say I can’t see her.
I pass the nurses station and walk into the closed room.
I step in farther and see my delicate woman lying on a bed that swallows her up.
She has on the same heavy blanket as Sutton, but with more monitors around her.
The tube in her throat makes my heart tighten.
I did this to her. Me. These are my enemies.
I put that target on her back. She didn’t even stand a chance.
Cupping her dainty hand in mine, I bring it up to my cheek. The warmth from her skin is a small reprieve, but not much.
“I’m so sorry, Wildcat. I never meant for you to get hurt or be put in the crosshairs of my enemies.” I kiss her hand over and over and then lean over and kiss her cheek. I love this woman with all my heart and would die for her without a second thought.
Wait?
Have I told her that I loved her?
Have I said those words out loud before?
“I love you, Raegan. I love you. I love you. I should’ve told you sooner, but I’m telling you now. Be brave and pull through for me. I need you in my life forever. Ride or die, Wildcat.” I keep kissing her and telling her to fight.
“She loves you too,” a voice from the hallway says, making me turn away from Raegan. Sutton’s sitting in a wheelchair with Havoc behind her is in the doorway. “When I pulled her out of the front seat, she kept moaning that she loved you.”
Her revelation brings me some comfort, but it’s short lived when Ian fucking Hastings strolls in with a team of nurses. He sees us standing around Raegan’s bed and halts his movements.
“We need to get her up to the OR for surgery,” Hastings tells us.
Placing a final kiss to her cheek and whispering I love you one last time, we watch as the staff roll her out of the room. Hastings starts to follow them, but I block him from the door.
“Nothing better happen to her in that OR, doc.” I get eye level with him.
He clears his throat and squares his shoulders to me.
“I know what I’m doing. She’ll make it,” he confidently states and then strolls out of the room.
After taking Sutton back to her room we make our way down to the waiting room where our brothers are pacing, antsy, waiting for some answers and revenge.
“Get a couple of prospects and Nomads down here. I want them lurking over every person who walks in and out of both their doors,” I order. “No one goes in or out without being checked by Melissa. The Vipers might come back to try to finish the job.”
They nod and Havoc and I fill them in on what Sutton told us. To say they’re mad is an understatement. Most of them see Raegan as the club’s queen or even a little sister not just my Ol’ Lady.
“Fuck waiting for tomorrow! Let’s go hard at them right now!” Riot argues and others voice a yes or hell yeah.
I’m all for going balls to the wall, but I also don’t want to walk us into a trap. I’ve always played it sharp, and I’m not about change that now because my woman is laid up in the hospital fighting for her life.
“We need to be wise and not play into their hands. They could be gearing up right now for an ambush,” I start, but Havoc, who is vibrating, interrupts.
“No, what we need to do is show these motherfuckers who’s boss!
What if they’d gotten Raegan at the race?
They’d have her right now, and we wouldn’t be able to do a damn thing about it.
She’s got three holes peppering her body because of us, and I think we need to make it right.
” My brothers grunt in approval. “Not to mention they killed Trick for protecting our women.”
He’s right and I know it. I’ve been holding off for too long on these assholes, and it’s time that they paid the piper.
The thought of them having her sets me boiling mad.
Hector already put his hands on her once, and now they’ve almost killed her.
I’m in a blind rage thinking about everything that’s happened tonight.
Without thinking, I stand up from my chair.
“Okay, brothers, let’s gather up the rest of the men and do this. Tonight, we end this war!”
