Chapter 10

Chapter

Ten

Bane

After dropping off my last soul for the day, I head back to the castle, eager to get my hands on my Little Human. He’s all I was able to think about today, just like every day.

It’s taken some time, but I can now do my job without being completely distracted by my mate. It wasn’t easy, but I literally had no choice.

I thought bringing Onyx with me would solve the issue. How can I worry about someone who’s right there next to me? Yeah, it only made things worse.

It wasn’t me being worried about him that distracted me, it was the fact that my Little Human would get more and more turned on by every life I’d take.

The scent of his arousal was so overwhelming it made me lose all sense of control.

It led to the death of multiple people who were nowhere near their time to pass.

When we got back, I was called into Lucifer's office. This time, he wasn’t as easy going as before. He looked seconds away from killing me himself and I was banned from taking Onyx with me on any other jobs.

I brought up the fact that I was worried about his safety and needed to make sure my mate wasn’t going to be harmed, that I needed him by my side to ensure it. He told me that Onyx would be fine and he’d make sure everyone knew if they fucked with Onyx, they would have to deal with Lucifer himself.

He also gave me the option to take a step back from my job, maybe even retire. I declined. Reaping souls is what I do. It’s woven into my very existence. It’s all I’ve really known until I met Onyx.

There is no giving up this job.

So, it meant leaving Onyx at the castle with the faith that the king of Hell himself will keep my Little Human safe.

At first, I was still distracted, worried like always, but as time went by and Onyx would give me a recap of his day, I knew he was safe.

Still. I hated being away from my mate and I found myself rushing through my daily quota of my souls.

It’s been six months since I’ve dragged Onyx to Hell and in that time frame I still haven’t been able to find a middle ground regarding my job. At least for now, it’s enough.

“Little Human, I’m home.” I announce myself as I appear into our room.

My brow furrows when I don’t see my Little Human. “Onyx.” I call out, my boots pounding against the marble floors as I check the bathroom. Nothing. He’s not here.

A low rumbling growl of anger rattles in my chest. He’s gone. Again. It’s like he’s never home anymore.

Frustration boils. Can’t a man have his mate waiting for him when he comes home? Is it too much to ask for to have that peachy ass in the air, presenting me with my feast for the night after a long day of work? I feel like that's not a lot to ask.

I’m always home around the same time. He knows this.

Ripping the door open, I storm my way down to the courtyard.

Sometimes Onyx will sit with Lucifer's mates, Megan and Veronica. He really seems to enjoy their company. I don’t like it, but I’m not going to voice that opinion.

The last thing I need is for Lucifer to have another reason to end my existence.

“Bane.” Megan greets me with a friendly smile. Her and Veronica are sitting on a bench next to one another, drinking something. “How are you?”

“Horny.” I grunt and Veronica snorts.

“And blunt I see.” Veronica snickers.

“Is my mate here?” I ask, looking around.

“He was earlier, but he left to go help Elithel.” Megan answers.

My brow furrows. “The maid? What would he need to help her with?”

“The bag she was using to bring the dirty laundry down to the basement broke, so he offered to help.” Veronica smiles. “He’s just the sweetest, that boy.”

“Why would he help? It’s not his job, it’s hers.”

Megan looks at Veronica with a small smile before turning her attention back to me.

“Because that's the kind of guy your mate is, Bane. He’s not just going to sit around and wait for you to come back so you can… use his body.” She clears her throat, seeming to be trying not to laugh. I don’t understand what’s so funny.

“I don’t see any reason why not.”

Veronica grins. “You really are just a caveman, aren’t you?”

“No. I’m a reaper.” my brows furrow.

“Bane, hunny, you need to understand that Onyx was just a human a few months ago. He had friends, a mother who he misses. He’s not going to just sit around all day every day, that poor boy would go insane.”

“It’s Hell. It’s common here.” I shrug.

“Bane.” Veronica glares at me. “You better start treating that boy better or you’re going to have to deal with me.”

“And me.” Megan adds.

I want to tell them I’m not afraid of them. And I’m not. Their mate however, yeah, not touching that.

“I’m going to find Onyx.” I mutter, growing frustrated with these two.

Telling me I need to treat Onyx better. I treat him just fine. I let him cum. Every single time. You know, if he’s a good boy. And, if he doesn’t die before I cum, I fuck him again as a reward. How is that not treating him right?

Heading down to the laundry room, I don’t find Onyx anywhere. “You.” I point to the woman folding sheets.

She jumps and spins around. “Yes?”

“Where’s my mate?” I growl.

“Onyx?” she smiles. “He just left. Said he was hungry and was going to grab something to eat.”

“Finally, someone helpful.” I mutter.

As I approach the kitchen, I hear chatter and laughter. My spine stiffens. I know that laugh. It’s my mate’s laugh. Who the hell is making my man laugh? Only I am allowed to make him feel joy.

Shoving the door open, it slams against the wall. Onyx, the cook and three other kitchen staff jump, looking over at me in fear. When they see me their scared looks remain, all but Onyx’s. His mouth breaks into a wide grin.

“You’re home,” he says.

“You’d know that if you were in our room.” I glare at him. “What are you doing here?”

He huffs, rolling his eyes. “I was hungry. So I came down to get something to eat.”

“It’s not supper time.” I point out.

“No, but there’s something called snacks. And Beatrice said she would make me my favorite dessert that my mother used to make me.” He turns to Beatrice. “I’m gonna head into town now to grab those ingredients. Thank you so much for this again. I’m excited.” he laughs.

“Of course, sweet boy.” she pats his cheek lovingly. “And thank you for going to grab them for me.”

“No trouble at all.” Onyx turns to me. “Ready?”

“For what?” I narrow my eyes.

“To go into town. Were you not listening to what I just said?”

Huffing, I shoot a glare towards Beatrice. The old lady shoots me one right back, giving me the ‘I’m watching you’ gesture.

“I’m not above killing women.” I mutter under my breath after Onyx heads out before me.

“And I’m not above telling the king you’re threatening his best cook.” she huffs.

Who does she think she is? Onyx is my mate. Mine!

“Sorry to make you have to come searching for me.” Onyx says as we head out of the castle. “I had a busy day.” he laughs.

“So have I.” I grunt. “And I was expecting you to be home in bed.”

He glares at me over his shoulder. “We can have sex later. We don’t need to be going at it every waking hour of the day.”

“Why not?” I grunt. “If I’m not working, I’d rather have your tight slutty ass swallowing my cock whole as I make you cum over and over again.”

A hint of his arousal permeates the air, making my cock twitch. He clearly wants me, I don’t understand why he won’t let me fuck him.

“Do you not want me anymore?” I ask. “Is that it? Is that why you’re not waiting for me in bed?”

“What?” he looks at me like I’m crazy. “No. That's not it. It’s really not a big deal, Bane. You know I don’t sit around waiting for you all day. I just normally happen to be back when you’re off work. Today I wasn’t. That’s it.”

That's not it. He’s out making friends with everyone while I’m gone. Spending his time with people who are not me. He’s mine. Mine mine fucking mine.

“You know, you’re starting to act like a jealous boyfriend.”

“I’m not your boyfriend.” I growl. “I’m your mate.”

“Is that not the same thing?”

“Boyfriends come and go. Mates are forever.”

He sighs heavily. “Can we not argue? Let’s just enjoy the nice day and go for a walk.”

Nice day?

I look up at the orange, red and yellow clouds above us. Distant sounds of thunder boom as lightning strikes in the horizon. What about today is nice? It’s Hell. It’s never a nice day.

“Have you been smoking crack?” I ask seriously.

He snorts. “What, no. Why are you asking me that? Have you?”

“No.” my brow furrows. “Drugs don’t work on me.”

“You’re acting really weird today. Odder than normal. What's wrong?”

“I don’t want to go for a walk. I want to be in our room, inside you.” I grumble, walking alongside him as we head towards town. “Can’t I just snap my fingers and get the ingredients?”

“You could. But we can’t take the easy way out all the time, Bane.” he sighs like he’s annoyed. What does he have to be annoyed with? I’m the one annoyed. I could be having mind blowing sex right now instead of walking. I don’t even need to walk, I can hover, float, or appear anywhere I want to go.

This seems like unnecessary steps.

“Why not?” I ask. “If I have the power to do so, why wouldn’t I?”

“We’re going to live forever, yes?”

“Of course."

“Then that means we have millions of hours we need to kill. If we do everything the easy way, we’re going to get bored fast. We don’t have to rush through them. Just take the time to enjoy the small things. It helps pass the time.”

“If you get bored, we can just have sex.”

“Sex sex sex.” he shouts. “That’s all you think about.”

“That is not true.” I scoff. “I think about death too. And murder.” I point at him. “Oh, and killing you while fucking.”

“That’s still sex!”

“It’s the fun kind of sex!” I shout back.

“You are a stubborn bastard." He glares up at me, nostrils flaring.

“And you’re a bratty human!” I growl.
