Chapter 14

As the elevator doors opened with a soft ding, I followed Daniel out into the dimly lit hallway, my heart racing with anticipation. Daniel stopped just outside his apartment door, an endearing mix of nervousness and eagerness in his eyes.

“Well, this is me,” he said, motioning awkwardly toward his apartment, the words cascading out before he had a chance to think.

We both paused, caught in the magnetism of the moment. I felt my breath catch as our eyes locked, a profound silence enveloping us. It was as if the world had faded away, leaving just the two of us standing there, our heartbeats synchronized with the electric tension in the air.

Daniel bit his lip, glancing down briefly, battling the urge to invite me inside—to share more of himself and the space that felt so personal.

I had felt so comfortable with him all day, and now, with the potential for something deeper hanging in the air, the prospect felt intoxicating yet terrifying.

“Um... would you want to come over for breakfast tomorrow? You could meet my friends Jayda and Caleb,” he offered, his voice carrying a hint of hope.

I felt my eyes widen with interest, my heart lifting at the invitation. “I’d love that,” I replied, a genuine smile breaking across my face. “You’re sure it’s okay?”

“Definitely! I think they’d love to meet you,” Daniel said.

We exchanged shy smiles, neither breaking the gaze, lost in each other’s eyes for just a moment longer. The world outside seemed distant and irrelevant as we relished the connection—one that felt more profound than just a casual encounter.

Finally, after what felt like an eternity, Daniel took a small step back, breaking the tension. “It’s just, uh... I don't think I should be inviting you in just yet, or...” he chuckled, feeling a mix of light-heartedness and surprise.

“Yeah, me neither, I get it, really...” I admitted, still flustered, running a hand through my hair in a nervous gesture.

We both laughed lightly, the sound echoing in the corridor, dissipating some of the palpable tension. It felt right, yet there was a lingering sense of hesitation hanging in the air.

Daniel suddenly leaned in, his lips crashing against mine with an intensity that made my knees weak.

The kiss was deep, passionate, filled with unspoken desires.

My hands found their way to his waist, pulling him closer as the world spun around us.

Time seemed to stop as I lost myself in the warmth of his embrace, my heart thundering against my chest with such force I was certain he could feel it too.

The sweet taste of him, mixed with lingering traces of coffee from earlier, intoxicated me in ways I'd never experienced before.

Every royal protocol, every carefully maintained barrier I'd built around myself, melted away in that moment, leaving only the raw, honest connection between us.

Daniel pulled away slightly, his warm breath caressing my ear as he murmured softly, his voice low and husky with barely restrained desire. "I can't deny that every part of me wants you to stay with me tonight," he admitted candidly as I shivered from his closeness alone.

"But I have this unbreakable rule about never letting things go too far on a first date.

" His fingers traced tantalizing patterns along my skin.

"And I'm painfully aware that if I allow you to come in with me now," he paused for emphasis before continuing in an almost reverent whisper, "I don't think I'll be able to stick by that rule or keep these wandering hands from exploring every inch of your body. "

A shiver ran down my spine, his words igniting something primal within me. My heart hammered against my chest, and I could feel the heat rising in my cheeks. The thought of staying, of following him through that door, was intoxicating.

The hallway felt too small, too intimate, too dangerous. Every fiber of my being screamed to stay, but my conscience wouldn't let me.

I forced myself to take a step back, though every cell in my body protested the movement. The loss of Daniel's warmth against me felt like physical pain.

"You're right," I breathed out, running my fingers through my disheveled hair. "We should wait."

Daniel's eyes sparkled in the dim hallway light, his lips still red from our kiss. The sight nearly broke my resolve.

"Tomorrow then?" His voice came out rough, matching the electricity still crackling between us.

"Tomorrow," I nodded, trying to ignore how the simple word held so much promise. "Sweet dreams, Daniel."

He fumbled with his keys, our eyes still locked. The metal jingled as he found the right one, sliding it into the lock. "Goodnight, Harry."

The door clicked shut between us, and I pressed my forehead against the cool wall beside it, trying to calm my racing heart. The ghost of his touch lingered on my skin, making it impossible to think straight.

Behind the closed door, I heard the soft thud of Daniel leaning against it, and imagined him standing there, just as affected as I was.

After a few steadying breaths, I pushed myself away from the wall and headed toward the elevator, where Erik waited discreetly in the shadows of the building's lobby.

Daniel

I leaned against my side of the door, heart pounding in my chest. The soft thud on the other side told me Harald was doing the same. My fingers traced the wood grain, imagining his warmth just inches away through the barrier between us.

"Fuck," I whispered, closing my eyes. Every nerve in my body screamed to yank that door open, to pull him inside and forget all about my stupid first-date rule. The memory of his lips on mine in the coffee shop, the way his hands had cupped my face - it sent electricity down my spine.

A soft sigh drifted through the door. My hand wrapped around the doorknob, the metal cool against my palm. One twist and he'd be here, pressing me against the wall, those gorgeous blue eyes darkened with want...

"Get it together, Daniel," I muttered, forcing my hand to drop.

The ghost of Alex's betrayal flickered through my mind - a reminder of why I had these boundaries in the first place.

But Harald felt different. The vulnerability in his voice when he'd shared his struggles, the genuine way he listened. ..

Harald's footsteps finally retreated down the hallway, slow and hesitant. Each step echoed like physical pain in my chest. I pressed my forehead against the door, listening until the elevator dinged and the last traces of his presence faded away.

My body still hummed with unspent energy. The phantom sensation of his kiss lingered on my lips. Tomorrow couldn't come fast enough - but for now, this space between us was necessary. Even if every cell in my body disagreed.

I spun around at the sound of slow clapping behind me, my heart leaping into my throat. Caleb stood in the living room doorway, a smirk plastered across his face. Next to him, Jayda doubled over with laughter, clutching her stomach.

"That was the most dramatic door-lean I've ever witnessed." Caleb's clapping echoed through our apartment. "Oscar-worthy performance."

Heat rushed to my face. "How long have you two been standing there?"

"Long enough to see you groping the door like it was your last hope on Earth." Jayda wiped tears from her eyes, her black mascara smudging. "Girl, I haven't seen you this sprung since-" She caught herself, the name 'Alex' hanging unspoken between us.

"This is different," I crossed my arms, trying to salvage some dignity. "And I wasn't groping the door."

"Oh honey, you were one step away from making out with it." Jayda sashayed over, throwing an arm around my shoulders. "But I get it - that man is fine. Those eyes? That accent? If I wasn't taken..."

"Hey!" Caleb protested.

"You know I love you, babe." Jayda blew him a kiss. "But seriously Danny, the sexual tension was so thick in that hallway, I'm surprised the smoke alarms didn't go off."

I groaned, burying my face in my hands. "I hate you both. "

"No you don't." Caleb adjusted his beanie. "And for what it's worth, I respect the self-control. Even if it did look physically painful."

"Wait." I dropped my hands from my face, narrowing my eyes at them. "How would you two even know what happened in the hallway?" Heat crept up my neck for a different reason now. "Were you pervs spying on us?"

Jayda's guilty expression said it all. She untangled herself from my shoulders and backed away, hands raised. "Now Danny, before you get all worked up-"

"We were watching through the peephole," Caleb admitted, adjusting his glasses. "In our defense, we had to make sure this mystery man wasn't an axe murderer."

"The peephole?" My voice cracked. "Are you serious right now?"

"Girl, what did you expect?" Jayda flopped onto our couch. "You've been texting this man non-stop, then suddenly he flies across an ocean to see you? We had to make sure he was legit."

"By watching us like some discount reality show?"

"If it helps, we couldn't hear anything." Caleb shrugged. "We just saw a lot of intense staring and then that kiss that looked like it was about to set the hallway on fire. It was like watching porn gifs, lots of eye candy but no sound."

I grabbed the nearest throw pillow and launched it at his head. He ducked, laughing.

"And then there was all that dramatic leaning and sighing-" Jayda mimed swooning against the couch.

"I hate you both so much right now." I snatched another pillow. "I can't believe you were spying on me with Harald."

"Honestly I suspect half of Brooklyn was spying on you guys, from the looks of it. You two weren't exactly being discreet about it" Jayda waggled her eyebrows. "Unless you're planning to make out with the door again?"

The second pillow hit her square in the face.

"And yes, it was painful," I admitted to Caleb, dropping onto our couch. "But worth it. I think. God, is it tomorrow yet?"
