NOW
“Didion, wake up.”
I startle awake, peeling up off the mattress like a cobra, and turn, blinking to see Sammie standing in front of the window at the side of the bed.
“What time is it?” I ask, not fully alert yet, reaching instinctively for a phone that isn’t on the nightstand. I rub my eyes and blink in the bright sunshine.
“I don’t know what time it is,” she says, her eyes wide. “But I know what day it is.”
