Chapter 66

I know it sounds stupid, like the girl who goes to London for a week and comes back with an accent, but there’s something suddenly weird about the idea of my phone.

It seems so pointless and empty. Even as I know I’m sure I’ll get sucked back into using the timers and texting and occasional doomscrolling and countless hours of podcasts—in that moment, it just seems like a toy I’ve lost complete interest in and no longer see the point of.

Ms. Collie is in the kitchen now, strangely in socks, per the no-shoes rule, and I wonder if she was in socks the other day when she came too, and if I was truly so distracted by life that I had actually not noticed this stranger’s feet.

“Was the weekend good?” she asks. “I love this house. It’s just paradise.”

“It was great.” Matt’s voice has a hint of the professionalism back again. “So, are there any other documents we need to think about today? Do we know the plan for the celebration later?”

“Oh, yes, of course. I have this letter from Babe.” She hands it over to him.

“And as for the service itself, I believe the town has that covered. You should be able to sit back and relax. You know, as much as you can, given the circumstances.” She makes a sympathetic face.

“Now, I’m going to head back out, I just wanted to make sure you had everything you needed.

I’ll be back in a few hours for the service. ”

Matt walks her to the door, and then returns with the letter. “Who wants to read it?”

Sammie takes it from him and then opens it with shaking hands.

Begins to read.
