Chapter Twenty-Four #2
“Shut the fuck up, do you want to blow this?” he looked between the three of us.
“Are you out of your mind?” he asked Waverley.
“How the fuck did you get here? And you,” he pointed at Widow.
“Get back to the car where you’re supposed to be.
We will talk about all of this when we get back, but it’s too fucking late now for this shit.
You are in big fucking trouble,” he said to Waverley.
Widow turned to head back to the car. Dirt popped his head out of the door to Danica’s kitchen and gave each of us a look that said we were fucking this up. Only King, Dirt and War were going inside. Casper had gone to his post at the other side of the house.
“You stay outside,” King said in exasperation.
“No,” she shook her head to emphasize the point.
“Waverley,” I groaned at her but I looked to King. “We can’t leave her outside alone.”
King jammed his finger into my chest to reinforce his words.
“It’s on you to keep her safe. You both stay back until we’re inside and have secured Danica.
Then, and only then, might I consider letting you come in.
I mean it, Waverley. You push me on this.
Jesus fucking Christ,” he turned away from us then headed along the patio that led to the back door.
“Do you have any idea what you’ve done,” I grabbed her arm and started towing her after me so we could get somewhere out of sight. Not only did I now have to babysit her, I also wasn’t on the team inside the house and couldn’t keep an eye on War.
“Outsmarted everyone?” she asked but her nonchalance faded quickly when she saw the expression on my face. “Stay behind you, keep my mouth shut and don’t do anything stupid.”
I hurried her across the paved patio, there was a screened porch attached to the house, the windows were only half height from the roof, the base was solid wood and there was a step up to the door with flowerpots around it.
All the lights were off, but it created a small, concealed space where no one could see us from the other houses.
I didn’t like how wide open the garden was beyond, even if it was dark out there.
I huddled her into the corner, away from the external door to the porch.
I glanced down at her. She was all in black, her hair tied up.
I still couldn’t believe what she’d done.
“How’d you even get out of the trunk?”
“Cars made after 2002 have trunk release buttons inside,” she told me. “It was mostly added to stop people being kidnapped,” she gave me a deadpan look.
“How did I not know that?”
“You ride a motorcycle and hate cars,” she whispered.
Fuck, I was so pissed right now. I kept shaking my head, looking all around to make sure we were still going undetected.
“Sorry,” Waverley said, staring at her feet. “I needed to be here. I’m part of this too.”
I didn’t answer her. I had no idea what King was going to do to her once we got back. Any goodwill she’d built up with the Prez was in the toilet now. Not to mention, she’d promised not to do anything to undermine me.
I should have fucking known she’d do something, I just never thought she’d hide in the trunk of the god damn car. I couldn’t believe she’d been lying back there the whole time and none of us had any idea. It was ingenious if you thought about it.
“I’m too mad to talk to you.”
She leaned back against the wall. I hated making her feel bad but fuck… I glanced at her, she didn’t even look upset or contrite, despite her apology. My life with her was definitely not going to be boring.
“What exactly did you want to achieve?”
“I thought you weren’t talking to me.”
I rolled my eyes. She was right though, we shouldn’t be talking. My phone buzzed with an incoming call from Ink. “What’s happening?”
“Her bed hasn’t been slept in, they can’t find her. Probably heard all the fucking commotion. They’re going to search the rest of the property. Keep an eye on the back, me and Kansas can see the front and Casper is round the side watching the garage. War did find Nytro and Jameson.”
“They’re inside?”
“Dead. They were in the basement gym, guess she didn’t plan on doing any running on that treadmill.
She’d shot them, woman’s a fucking psycho,” he paused a second and when he spoke there was a hint of amusement to his voice.
“Do yourself a favor and keep the Princess out of everyone’s way.
She’s in a world of hurt for this stunt. ”
“Yeah, I know,” I glared at Waverley. “She’s a fucking pain in my ass.
” Ink hung up and I tried not to smile at the look on her face.
“Life would be fucking boring if you weren’t,” I gave her a quick grin even though she scowled.
I grabbed the back of her head and pulled her mouth to mine.
She made a surprised sound but grabbed my cut and kissed me back.
We were both fucking crazy. I pulled back, before I got too carried away, I could already feel my dick stirring, and this really wasn’t the time. “War is gonna kick your ass too.”
“I get it, everyone’s gonna take a shot, but it was worth it.”
“Do as your told, for once, Wave. Promise me.”
She nodded and this time actually looked as if she meant it.
I hated standing around out here but I was alert, watching everything, every branch that moved in the breeze drew my attention, every little sound had Wave looking in that direction too.
At least with her here we could keep an eye on more ground.
Time was dragging on, we were supposed to get in fast, let King do whatever it was he wanted to do to her, then get away. I glanced at my watch, it was just after two AM. Waverley gave me an anxious look, even she could tell this wasn’t going to plan.
I pulled her into me, smoothed the frown wrinkles on her forehead, but still had my eyes everywhere.
"Hudson," she hissed urgently, her eyes on the porch.
I looked up and saw it too, movement from inside. I pushed Waverley behind me, drew my gun and crouched out of sight of the window. It could be one of the guys but as the person moved closer to the door, I saw it was a woman.
“It’s her,” Waverley said, her voice high pitched.
I moved to the door, my gun up. “Let them know,” I told Wave after a very brief moment of hesitation looking at me.
Worried about me. “Go.” She took off running for the back door.
I heard the door behind me unlocking and before I could even think about it, I grabbed the handle and pushed it hard.
It opened inward and she grunted as it hit her and she stumbled back with a screech.
“She’s in the porch!” I heard Wave’s voice and the sound of the others coming as Danica whirled on me.
I ran inside, hoping to tackle her to the ground, noticing at the last minute she had a gun in her hand.
Fucking hell, this couldn’t be the second time in two days I was staring down the barrel of a gun.
I didn’t want to take her out, she was King’s.
Plus we didn’t want to alert anyone we were here firing off a shot.
I threw myself at her before she could swing the gun around, hitting her hip with my shoulder when I ducked low. She screamed again, her gun going flying out of her hand. I rose up to go after her just as King burst through the doors to the porch.
Danica shouted out, “No!” as she lunged for her gun.
I pushed a sofa out of the way as I tried to go after her and grab her. She was wearing workout pants and a fitted hoodie so there was nothing I could grab on to as she dodged out of the way.
“I got her,” I threw myself forward, but she managed to grab the gun as I tackled her down. King ran towards us, ready to fight her too.
Danica bucked up, catching me off guard and I slammed into a chair. The sound of a gun firing had me ducking my head. Someone screamed. I didn’t hesitate to tackle her again and this time managed to punch the gun out of her hand.
“Dad!” Waverley shrieked.
I was aware of her coming into the room, just as I noticed King drop down on one knee, he was clutching his hand to his chest, but he didn’t go all the way down and his face was full of rage.
Blood was leaking between his fingers. I couldn’t worry about that, I had to get this bitch down. I grabbed both of her arms and pulled them behind her, she was screaming and shouting, so I slapped my hand over her mouth.
“Prez!” Dirt’s voice now.
Danica was putting up one hell of a fight, but I was stronger than her and held her down.
Even when she bit my fucking finger, I grimaced but didn’t let go.
King got to his feet and came over, he didn’t hesitate to grab Danica out of my hands, she started batting at him but he put both hands around her throat and rushed her back against the nearest wall, knocking the wind right out of her.
I struggled up to my feet as Waverley started towards them but War was there, holding her back.
“I’ve got you now, you fucking whore,” King said through clenched teeth.
I couldn’t see an exit wound on his back and it had been difficult to see where the bullet had hit him when he went down. He was having some kind of superhuman burst of rage because he wasn’t letting go of Danica’s throat.
She couldn’t scream because he was choking the life out of her, battering her hands at him, her legs kicking hard against the floor. I looked back at Dirt and War, who was still holding Waverley against him.
“You’re a worthless piece of shit,” King told her. “No one ever gave a shit about you because you’re a fucking evil bitch. Your sister was worth a million of you and I’m doing this for her. I’m sending you to hell where you fucking belong.”
