Epilogue
Kade
Isabelle is fast asleep in my bed— our bed.
Our things are now ours whether she’s at my place or I’m at hers.
Since we had one of our wild nights I’m going to let her sleep in.
It’s Saturday morning. I promised Dmitri I’d catch up with him today, so we’re gonna grab some coffee at the coffeehouse then do some football training together. We always use this time of year to work on our game play.
When we’re done we’re heading into the city to meet our fathers for lunch. His father and mine are just like old times. It’s been great.
I plant a little kiss on Isabelle’s cheek and she smiles in her sleep. She’s a beautiful sight asleep or awake and I can’t believe she’s mine.
One day she’ll be my wife and we can be bad together for the rest of our lives.
I tear myself away from her and head out of the apartment with my sports bag in hand.
I make it to the coffeehouse in five minutes and find Dmitri there waiting for me. He’s already sipping on a cup of expresso.
“Hey bro.” He nods at me while I take my seat.
“Hey.”
“I ordered for you. They’ll be over in a minute.”
“Thanks. You good?”
“I am. I can tell you’re doing good too. Married life suits you.” He winks at me.
I laugh. “To qualify for married life don’t you have to be married?”
“Aren’t you? You’re acting like you are. You’re no different to Thorne, calling Isabelle your wife or Mrs. Gurkovsky.” It sounds like he’s taunting me but he’s not. No one is happier for me than him.
“Humor me.”
“I am. I like this. And it does suits you.”
“You were right. Everything you said was right. Isabelle and I figured it out.”
“I knew you would. Because you both wanted to.”
“What about you? How are things with Hayley?” They started dating last month.
“I broke up with her last night.”
My brows knit. “Damn, sorry to hear that.”
“Don’t be. It’s all good.” His tone holds the same nonchalance you’d use when you’re talking about the weather.
“What happened? You seemed to like her.”
He looks over my shoulder and a thin, tightlipped smile spreads across his face. I follow his gaze and see that Mackenzie has just entered the coffee house with Kyle.
Those two have been dating since the Valkyrie auction, but from time to time I catch Dmitri watching Mackenzie and her watching him too. They never stopped doing that thing no matter who they’re with.
Like now.
Kyle walks over to the ready-made sandwich section and Mackenzie sees Dmitri watching her when she turns to pick up a chocolate bar.
Then they stare at each other. Her looking like a lost little lamb and him looking like the hungry wolf. He cocks his head and the tail of the scorpion tattooed on the side of his neck beats with his pulse.
The stare fest breaks when Kyle returns to Mackenzie and gives Dmitri a cutthroat stare. He ushers her away, but she still glances over her shoulder at Dmitri.
I watch until they’re on the other side of the coffee house and I can’t see them anymore. Then I look back at Dmitri and he returns his gaze to me.
“Something came up,” he answers my previous question.
Because of those tense seconds that have gone by I almost forgot what I asked.
“What’s going on between you and Mackenzie?”
“Nothing yet.”
“Yet?”
“So does that mean you’re going to ignore your family fued?”
“Something like that.” He sips his drink and sets the cup back down.
“Well this will be interesting.”
“I think so too.”
I can’t wait to see how this is going to play out.
