Chapter Five

P ROSECUTOR GONZALEZ: “Agent Bentley, please explain to the court how you were able to get this information on the defendant Harvey Adler?”

AGENT BENTLEY: “Yes, sir. In accordance with my instructions, I was undercover as his son-in-law.”

PROSECUTOR GONZALEZ: “Can you explain further?”

AGENT BENTLEY: “I don’t understand what you mean.”

PROSECUTOR GONZALEZ: “I think you do, agent. What was your relationship with Clementine Adler?”

AGENT BENTLEY: “She was a part of the investigation.”

PROSECUTOR GONZALEZ: “In what way?”

AGENT BENTLEY: “I was posing as her husband.”

PROSECUTOR GONZALEZ: “Why?”

AGENT BENTLEY: “With the purpose of getting information about the defendant.”

PROSECUTOR GONZALEZ: “Why you, Agent Bentley, instead of any other member of your department?”

AGENT BENTLEY: “The Chief thought I was the most likely candidate to succeed in enticing the subject into a relationship with me.”

PROSECUTOR GONZALEZ: “Why?”

AGENT BENTLEY: “I was thought to be the most physically appealing candidate. The most likely one on the team to entice the subject into giving us any useful information.”

PROSECUTOR GONZALEZ: “What was your assignment?”

AGENT BENTLEY: “Get close to Clementine Adler.”

PROSECUTOR GONZALEZ: “In what way?”

AGENT BENTLEY: “Romantically.”

PROSECUTOR GONZALEZ: “When you say romantically, what do you mean? Sexually?”

AGENT BENTLEY: “Correct.”

PROSECUTOR GONZALEZ: “Describe further.”

AGENT BENTLEY: “I don’t understand the question.”

PROSECUTOR GONZALEZ: “Answer the question, agent. What did you do to entice Clementine Adler into a sexual relationship with you?”

AGENT BENTLEY: “Flowers. Dinner. The usual.”

PROSECUTOR GONZALEZ: “What is ‘the usual,’ agent?”

AGENT BENTLEY: “I don’t see how this is relevant.”

PROSECUTOR GONZALEZ: “Let the court be the judge of what’s relevant and not. How did you entice the subject to enter into a relationship with you?”

AGENT BENTLEY: “I asked her on dates. I listened to her. I gave her flowers.”

PROSECUTOR GONZALEZ: “Did you have sex with Clementine Adler?”

AGENT BENTLEY: “I don’t see how this is relevant.”

PROSECUTOR GONZALEZ: “Answer the question, Agent Bentley.”

AGENT BENTLEY: “Yes.”

PROSECUTOR GONZALEZ: “Why did you have sex with Clementine Adler?”

AGENT BENTLEY: “To get her to trust me.”

PROSECUTOR GONZALEZ: “So, this was not a real relationship? You were not actually legally married?”

AGENT BENTLEY: “Correct.”

PROSECUTOR GONZALEZ: “Would you say you succeeded in your mission? You made Clementine Adler fall in love with you?”

AGENT BENTLEY: “Yes.”

PROSECUTOR GONZALEZ: “Did you ever feel guilty? About the deception you were perpetrating on this innocent woman, simply because her father was accused of governmental fraud?”

AGENT BENTLEY: “No. I was just doing my job.”
