Chapter 42
After dinner, I went back to the training grounds, quiet except for the soft rustle of wind. I lingered by the stables where the tygers roamed, stretching and running.
When I heard footsteps approaching me from behind, I smiled to myself, sensing Blake.
His powerful frame was relaxed, bronze hair catching the fading light. I could see the focus in his eyes.
I turned back to Flame as Blake settled in at my side, though I was aware of his slightest movement.
Flame paced, her golden eyes locked on Kingsolver. His silvery form moved with predatory grace as he circled her, his muscles rippling under his scarred hide.
My tygress had been playful at first, flicking her tail at him, teasing him. But now the air between them felt as charged as the energy between Blake and me.
He’s trying so hard, she purred in my mind, her eyes narrowing in a mock challenge as Kingsolver rumbled, his sapphire eyes watching her every move. He thinks because he’s bigger, I’ll roll over for him.
I smirked. Sure seems like you want to.
At that, she let out a low growl that was as much for me as it was for Kingsolver.
The silver tyger was used to being in charge, and he expected Flame to fall in line. But she wasn’t having it.
Let’s see how far he’ll push before he realizes I’m the one in control, she mused, amusement rippling through our Bond.
I couldn’t help but smirk at them.
“Your tygress is about to tease my Kingsolver into a frenzy,” Blake murmured.
My smile didn’t falter. “And your tyger is riling up my tygress.”
His bicep pressed into my side heavily as he crossed his arms.
Flame’s sleek form darted around the massive, battle-scarred Kingsolver, her amber eyes flicking toward me. Just go mate with him again. You know you want to. You humans make everything so complicated.
At that, I stumbled and almost fell on my butt.
“Easy,” Blake said softly, his voice low and teasing. “Are you okay?”
“Just fine,” I managed.
Are you Mating with Kingsolver? I asked.
Of course not. Flame snorted, but hesitated, pausing in her dance around him. Maybe if he manages to convince me. Someday.
“Perhaps we should spar,” Blake offered, pulling me farther into the empty rings.
I shook my head. “We don’t—”
“Try it. Let’s test the strength of our Pairing.”
Blake guided my hands, his touch light but firm, as we moved in slow, deliberate circles.
Everything felt different now that we were Paired. I could sense how our bodies mirrored one another’s, each movement reflecting the balance of yin and yang, his unyielding aggression tempered by my supple strength.
He stepped closer, his hands guiding mine through an upward arc as we shifted our weight from one foot to the other in perfect synchronization. Every step felt like a dance, a slow push and pull as our magic swirled between us, charged but controlled.
We stepped into the movement, our bodies flowing like water in a fluid exchange of power and grace.
Yin and yang, we were opposites in motion, each giving and taking from the other.
Suddenly, Blake’s movements transitioned into something sharper, more intense strikes, where his forearms brushed against mine, blocking imaginary attacks in a fluid sequence.
My reflexes took over as I parried, our arms weaving in and out of each other’s space with precision and speed, the energy between us escalating with every strike.
His hand slid to my elbow, drawing me into a tight, defensive movement, but instead of stepping away, he held me there, the air between us thick with tension.
My heart raced as I twisted out of his grip, the feel of the earth beneath me grounding me.
His hand shot forward, aiming for my shoulder in a quick jab, but I twisted away, my body bending like a reed in the wind. As he pressed closer, I flowed with his movements, using his momentum to my advantage, slipping around him and landing lightly on my feet.
We circled each other, our breathing in sync as the sparring intensified. Blake came at me again, this time with more force, a rapid combination of strikes and blocks that tested my agility. I ducked and dodged, twisting and spinning, a dance of deflection.
Beside us, Flame and Kingsolver mirrored the intensity of our movements.
Flame dropped into a low crouch, her muscles tensed as if ready to pounce, her eyes glittering with challenge. Kingsolver moved closer, his growl rumbling through the ground beneath us.
“You’re holding back,” Blake murmured, his breath warm against my skin as he pushed in closer. “Let go, Rubi. Let the magic flow through you.”
It wasn’t the magic I was afraid of. It was the pull between us, the charge that seemed to grow with every brush of his skin near mine. I could feel the yin-yang energy swirling between us, building, feeding off each other’s presence. But the closer we got, the harder it was to keep control.
It felt like last night when we tried to Pair and I couldn’t hold on to it. Like it wasn’t mine.
Kingsolver watched Flame with a slow, measured patience. His muscles rippled under his striped coat, his movements as sharp and controlled as his rider’s.
Blake stepped in closer, his arms reaching out to trap mine, but I dipped low, using his own weight against him as I hooked his arm and spun us both.
The sudden proximity sent a jolt of awareness through me, the heat of his body pressed against mine, his breath warm on my neck.
“Nice move,” he murmured, his voice rough.
I tried to keep my focus, but the more we sparred, the more the undercurrent between us simmered. Every time our bodies brushed, every glance exchanged in the heat of the fight, was like a magnet pulling us closer.
Flame and Kingsolver continued their own sparring, Flame darting in, her claws extended just enough to graze his flank. Kingsolver bared his teeth, swiping a great paw that Flame dodged, her lithe body weaving through the strikes.
He may be larger, but I’m faster, she purred. And he knows it.
As if to prove her point, Flame darted forward, then feinted to the side, drawing a frustrated growl from Kingsolver. He lunged, but she was already gone, slipping past him and swiping playfully at his flank before darting away again, her tail flicking in triumph.
Blake’s next move came faster, a feint to my left before sweeping low to trip me, but I leapt into the air, twisting at the last second to avoid his leg.
I landed lightly behind him, but before I could react, he was already spinning to meet me.
His hand locked around my wrist, pulling me close, our faces inches apart, our ragged breaths mingling.
The world around us seemed to fade, leaving only the quiet pulse of energy between us, the thread of fate binding us together. My pulse thrummed in my veins, and I wondered if Blake could feel it, too.
“Let go,” he whispered, his voice low. “You need to trust it. Trust me.”
I could feel the magic swirling between us, pulling us closer, the tug in my chest.
My stomach plummeted, a tidal wave of fear nearly knocking me down at the idea of fully releasing what I was sure I couldn’t control.
“Blake…” My tone was pleading.
Kingsolver growled low, his enormous form bristling as he lunged toward Flame again, but she dodged effortlessly.
She was playing with him, and he knew it.
She lunged, colliding with Kingsolver in a burst of energy.
His growl rumbled as he grappled with her, but Flame held her own, before suddenly bounding off at full speed with him in hot pursuit.
Blake stepped flush against my back, my every nerve ending on high alert at the press of his firm body, the evidence of his arousal, as he guided my hands through the next movement. The proximity made it hard to think, the energy between us crackling, ready to explode.
“You’re still holding back,” he murmured, his breath teasing the nape of my neck.
My heart pounded, and I could feel something building inside me, begging to be released.
But it wasn’t just the magic. It was everything. The pull between us, the heat of his skin so close to mine, the way his hands hovered, never quite touching but always there, always close.
“I’m not holding back,” I said, my voice coming out breathless. There was a burn behind my eyes.
Blake’s words curved around me, knowing. “You are. And so am I.”
Energy hung between us, heavy, charged, and I couldn’t ignore the double meaning. The tension in the air was palpable, and the line between magic and something even more dangerous was blurring by the second.
“I can’t.”
“Rubi—”
“I said I can’t,” I snapped, turning and walking away—my fear even stronger than the pull between us.
