33. Pecker
Chapter 33
Pecker
“Hello?” I answer the call, more than a little nervous about why Mason could be calling me.
“Hey, Peck. It’s Mason Bennett.”
“Hey. Please tell me there isn't someone else after Zoey and Sophia.”
“Nah, nothing like that.” His deep chuckle fills the line and makes me calm down a little bit. “Wes told me you’re moving to fairytale land.”
“Fairytale land?”
“Mulberry Lane.” He chuckles again.
“Yeah, I am. I just put in my notice with Colt yesterday. He isn't thrilled but he understands. Now, I just need to find a job before my savings run out.”
“Well, that’s why I'm calling you. Maddox and I need more help with our private security company. We were about to announce we’re hiring when Wes told me you were moving here. I called Colt and Jonah.”
“Ok…” I let my voice trail off. I don’t really know why he’s telling me this.
“I know you haven’t been a cop for long, but according to the two of them, you were a great addition to their forces. We want you to come in and see what we do when you get to town. We’d love to bring you on and train you.”
“You’re offering me a job?”
“Well, I'm trying to, but I guess I'm not doing a good job at it if you’re unsure. We want you to work for Bennett Bradley Security. We can teach you everything you need to know. We can discuss salary when you get here, but according to Colt and Jonah, you’ll be getting a nice pay raise. Colt actually negotiated on your behalf and got you more money.” He chuckles, surprising me with how happy he sounds.
All of my interactions with Mason so far have been when something bad is happening. It’s always him calling because of Jimmy and warning us or discussing our plans with him. It’s weird to hear him sounding so carefree and happy.
“I don’t even know what to say. Thank you.”
“You don’t need to thank me, Peck, just take care of my niece and treat her right.”
“Always. She’s the best thing that’s ever happened to me.”
“Good. Remember that. Oh, and welcome to the family.” He hangs up without another word.
I'm staring down at my phone trying to figure out what just happened when Sophia opens the front door.
“What’s wrong?”
“I just got offered a job,” I whisper.
“Ok… where?” Her brows form a deep V as she kneels on the ground in front of me and takes my hands in hers.
“Mason offered me a position with Bennett Bradley Security.”
“That’s amazing! They have such an awesome set up. I don’t know why I didn’t think of it before. You’d fit in so well with Mason and Maddox too!”
“It sounds like a great job.”
“Does this mean you’re moving home with me in a few weeks?” She blinks up at me with so much hope in her eyes.
“I gave Colt my notice yesterday and now I apparently have a new one waiting for me. We’re moving, baby.” I grin.
“Oh my gosh! I was so nervous you wouldn’t be moving with me. I was literally up all night last night texting Charlie. I couldn’t stomach the idea of leaving you behind and now I don’t have to.”
She pushes me back so she can straddle my hips, then her mouth is on mine. She’s frantic and needy, so much different from the slow and passionate kisses she normally likes.
“I'm so freaking happy, Peck,” she murmurs against my lips. “You’re the best fiancé ever.”
“Speaking of…” I pull back and so I can look her in the eyes. “When are we getting married?”
“As soon as possible… but after we move. I want to get married at home.”
“Is one month enough time?”
“Are you rushing me, Peck?” She grins, mischief twinkling in her eyes.
“Yes. I want to start a family and I think Wes will kill me if I do that before we walk down the aisle.”
“Shouldn’t I get the bakery off the ground before we start having kids?”
Wes has been looking for spaces Sophia could open a bakery. A place went up for sale next to Bennett Bradley Security and he jumped at the chance to buy it. He said if she didn’t like it, he’d use it as a rental and make some money off of it, but he thinks it’s perfect for what she wants and needs.
I loved the idea of her working next to Mason. I knew she’d be safe. Now that I’ll be working at Bennett Bradley Security, I like the idea even better. I can walk next door and see her at any time.
Wes took her on a tour of the place via video chat and it seems perfect. She’s already ordered the equipment she needs for the bakery and Wes is storing it in the warehouse until she can come home and see it in person. If she gives him the go ahead, the place should be transformed quickly into her dream bakery.
“Nah, I think we can make it work even with a little one. After all, we have all of Mulberry Lane at our backs. We’ll have more help than we know what to do with.”
“I like that. I really want a family.”
“I know you do, sweetheart.” I press a quick kiss to her lips. “I also think you should drive home this weekend to see the bakery space.”
“What?”
“If you like it, they can get a head start on renovations. Your dad told me last night they have an extra team right now. Something about permits not being ready for a new build. You could have everything ready by the time we move.”
“Can you come with me this weekend?”
“I have three days off.” I grin. I wasn’t supposed to be off, but Colt said to go and he’d cover it for me.
I think the man is taking pity on me because he knows how much I want to make Sophia happy. He also knows how excited we are to start our new lives together.
“Best. Fiancé. Ever.” She kisses me between each word, making a large smile spread across my face.
