Dream Pack (Into The Parallel Omegaverse #3)
Chapter One
Evan
“Evan, you can go to the waiting room now. Thank you,” the police officer stated.
“Okay. Thanks. Where’s my sister?” I asked, glancing around.
As soon as our pack arrived at the hospital, we’d been split up and questioned by both the police and the Bureau of Investigation.
There were also people who I suspected were from the Office of Designation Management, because they were asking about Rosalind, the woman Grace had thought was her mom.
“I’m sure she’s either in the waiting room or still being questioned.” She turned to talk to someone from the Bureau of Investigation.
Hopefully she wasn’t alone. They hadn’t let me stay with her.
While I’d asked for one of my alphas, or at least someone from the Center, to be there with me during questioning, I’d just gotten tired looks and been told that I wasn’t in trouble and things would go so much faster if I just cooperated.
It was clear that I wasn’t a suspect, that they were just trying to figure out what the fuck was going on. Also, I couldn’t wait to find out who Cassidy Silvers was and why the professor’s alpha was arrested for trafficking her, not Grace.
Looking around, I didn’t see anyone from my pack. Where did I even go? There were several waiting rooms here. Spencer and Grace had also been taken to different parts of the hospital–him for emergency surgery and her because she had another seizure.
I sent a message to the group chat, since I’d like to find my sister.
Me
Where are you all? Where’s Riley?
Jett
Bren and Wes are still being questioned. I’m waiting for Riley. Ask about Spencer and Grace?
Me
Will do.
Wes was livid–-I could feel it through the bond. Brennan, too, was close to breaking. Once again, someone attacked our pack, and the alphas hadn’t been able to stop it.
“Hey, can you tell me where my mate is?” I asked the woman at the information desk.
“ID?” She snapped her gum, looked at my ID, and went to her computer. “Wait in the family waiting room for intensive care on the second floor. I’ll note that you’re there.”
“Thanks. Wait, Grace isn’t in the Omega Ward?” I scanned the directory on the nearby pole. Omega Ward was on the third floor.
She shook her head. “There’s no Grace listed in your pack. This is for your alpha, Spencer.”
“Oh, okay.” That was my next question, anyway. “Could you please tell me where Grace Ellington is? She’s Spencer’s mate and was brought in at the same time. They just mated, so the paperwork for her to be part of the pack isn’t finished.” I turned on the charm.
Giving me a look that said she was immune to omega wiles, she typed on her computer.
“Sorry. You’re not her emergency contact. But one of your packmates who’s mated to her can ask about her.” With a wave of her hand, she went to help someone behind me.
Not her emergency contact? Yeah, I was going to have to fix that.
I went up to the second floor and added what I found to the group chat.
Me
Unless you want me to wait with you, I’m heading up to the second floor where Spencer is. They won’t tell me anything about Grace. Wes has to ask.
Jett
Go find Spencer. We’ll meet you there.
At the desk on the second floor, I tried again to get information on Grace. She said she’d do what she could, and I should wait. The family waiting room was stuffy and smelled of sadness and fear.
I played on my phone trying to distract myself. Where was my sister? Should I go look for her or continue to wait here for her and Jett?
Was Grace okay? Maybe they’d take her to Spencer after he got out of surgery. That was pretty normal when mates were both hospitalized.
A nurse in blue scrubs came in. “Hi, are you Evan? I’m here to take you to your mate.”
She was? I shot up out of my chair. I still couldn’t feel anything from Grace, which was part of my agitation.
“Thank you.” I followed her past the nurse’s station and down a hall. The door stood open. Monitors beeped, and tubes were attached to the person on the bed.
But it wasn’t Grace.
It was Spencer. They must have assumed that the omega waiting for Spencer was his. Still, I was so fucking glad to see him, even if he was unconscious or asleep, or something.
“He’ll be okay, right?” A bit of fear shot through me. I’m not sure I’d ever seen him so still.
Spencer had to be okay. He just had to. The idea that he might not be, made my chest tighten. He was the frosting that kept our pack together.
“You can lie down with him, just make sure you’re on his left side, not right.
Purring for him will help. The surgery went really well.
He’s asleep because he’s sedated. Alpha patients can be a bit…
troublesome, so we usually keep them sedated a little longer when their mates are also injured so they don’t hurt themselves trying to get to them,” she assured.
I got a glimpse of a bond mark on her wrist as she checked his monitors.
“That makes sense. Thank you. Hey, could you get me any information about his mate, Grace Ellington? She was brought in at the same time. She’s bonded to Spencer, but she isn’t actually pack yet, so no one will tell me anything about her.
I’m bonded to her, too, but you know, that doesn’t count.
” I rolled my eyes, hoping she’d be sympathetic.
She snorted. “I hear you on that. They didn’t want to let me in when my omega was having her baby because I’m a beta, so I’m not really her mate.
I ended up having to say that I was the doula to get in.
Well, I’m also her doula, but really, I think the laws need to get with the times. I’ll see what I can do.”
“Thanks. I just want to make sure that she’s okay.” I rubbed the center of my chest, getting a burst of anger from Wes.
The nurse left, and I went over to Spencer. The pack-sized room had a couch that probably pulled out into a bed, a couple of chairs, and a small table. It looked like there was enough room for Grace to be brought in with him. As she should be.
“Wake up soon, old friend. We need you. I need you. Grace needs you. The pack needs you.” I squeezed his hand.
The group chat was quiet, but everyone’s locations showed that they were here in the hospital. I texted them the room number. With the day weighing on me, I curled up with Spencer and purred for him for a few moments, like the nurse told me to.
Still, I needed to know Grace was okay. I sent her a shot of love. Nothing.
Wes sent me some back.
I wasn’t sure how long I’d been there when there was a knock on the open door. Where was my sister?
“Hi there. I’m Liz and I’m with the Omega Center. The nurse on duty thought you might want to talk.” A petite woman with a messy bun, a hot pink polo, and a large duffle bag stood there, Center credentials hanging around her neck.
“Sure, come in.” The hot pink polo said Crisis Response Team underneath the Center logo. Ooh, there were probably snacks in that bag.
She looked over at Spencer. “We can speak somewhere else if you’d like.”
“It’s fine.” I sat up on the bed.
“Are you sure? The cafeteria has ice cream.” Liz pulled a chair over. “It’s okay to leave him for a little bit.”
“Ice cream is tempting. But I’m fine. Spencer and I have been friends since we were tiny.
I have nothing to hide–or fear–from him.
Full disclosure, I work for the Center. So, if you don’t have time for me, or need to see other omegas, it’s fine.
I hope they didn’t call you in just for me.
” Pulling up my Center card on my phone, she scanned it with her tablet.
“I’m assigned here and on duty, so it’s fine.” Liz looked at her tablet. “You’re an advocate?”
“Yes, back in Rockland. I’d love to talk to you about being part of the Blanket Brigade. I’m supposed to start training in the fall.”
“That’s amazing. I’m happy to tell you whatever you want to know. First, can I ask you a few questions?” Again, her eyes flickered to Spencer.
I nodded, and she asked me the usual questions we always asked omegas, making sure they were safe and cared for.
“If you’re hungry, I have snacks.” She took a couple of packages out of her duffle. Each one had a drink and a variety of semi-healthy snacks and was tied with a bow.
“Thank you.” I took the one that had my favorite color of vitamin water in it.
She put the others back and pulled out more cute packages. “Would you like a comfort kit? It sounds like you might be here for a few days.”
“These are adorable; did you make these?” They contained things like slippers, eye masks, toiletries, vitamins, and tea.
“My mate and I put them together. So, your mates were attacked on the beach. That seems scary.” She put the rest of them back after I selected one.
“It was–and not how I expected our beach day to end. But the past few days have been a shit show.” I sighed.
“Oh no. I’m so sorry to hear that. Would it help to tell me about it?” Liz offered.
I shook my head. “Not really.”
It was fucking weird–and that was without us learning that Grace was born here then somehow made it to another world with her biological mother’s evil twin, who was also an illegal designation.
“Can you get me information about Grace Ellington? She’s in the hospital, too, and no one will tell me anything. She’s probably in the Omega Ward.” I made a face.
“I knew there was an ulterior motive to my mate sending me here. She had her sneaky face on.” Liz laughed. “I’ll pay Grace a visit and report back.”
“Thank you.” Any news would be a relief.
“I’ll return.” She grabbed her bag and left.
I munched on my snacks and checked my phone. No Wes. But Jett and Riley were on their way.
“There you are.” Jett came in, looking tired.
“Spence.” Riley started crying.
“Hey, come here. Spence is going to be okay. His surgery went well.” I stood and wrapped my arms around her. Riley was still in her black vintage bathing costume and holding a stuffed bear.
Someone at the hospital found me a shirt and shorts because I came in wearing only swim briefs. It looked like someone had found a shirt for Jett.
