Chapter 16

Chapter Sixteen

Daisy

A fter a few moments of lying in silence together, Nate leaned over to kiss Daisy once more before murmuring softly, “I think I might be in love with you.”

The words sent electric waves through Daisy’s entire being. She smiled up at him and replied, just as softly and just as full of unspoken meaning, “I think I might feel the same way.”

“This might sound fast, but I want to marry you,” he said after a moment of hesitation.

“Seriously?” she whispered.

Daisy felt like someone had kicked her in the gut. Her opinion of Nate was that he wasn’t one for getting engaged quickly, and there he was proposing? While it was what she wanted, it caught her off-guard. This impulsiveness could mean trouble for their relationship. She looked into his eyes, searching for any signs that this was some kind of joke or prank. But all she saw there was love and devotion .

“That’s madness,” she replied after a moment while struggling to push those thoughts out of her mind.

“I know,” he admitted sadly. “I shouldn’t have said anything.”

“I’ll marry you, Nate,” she responded warmly, thinking that she would marry this man, no matter how crazy it seemed.

Nate pulled her into a tight hug and kissed her deeply. When he pulled away, she saw his eyes were welling up.

“My mum will want to be there,” Nate blurted.

“My mum, too,” Daisy said, getting excited about the idea.

“Did you know our mothers were friends until she left the island?”

“No, really?”

“Yeah. When I told her I was in love with Daisy Turner, she cried. She misses your mum and was overjoyed that I’d found a woman to love.”

Daisy dipped her head to think, to get all her wishes out. “I want a simple wedding.”

“That’s okay with me.”

“Will you move into the cottage?”

“Absolutely. I’d be happy to wake up not smelling engine oil.”

Daisy let out a belly laugh and threw her head back. “Oh God, are we doing this?” she screeched.

“Yep. Shit.”

“What’s wrong?”

“I need a ring, and I didn’t really propose.”

“I don’t care about anything like that. I’d be happy with a plain wedding band. I don’t want fancy jewellery.”

“I’ll visit Mrs Diamond at her jewellery shop tomorrow and pick one out. ”

Daisy grinned at him.

She was going to be Mrs Hill.

Luke will be furious she’s getting married before him and Freya.

“Can we get married at the Turner Chapel?”

“If you can swing it without your aunt getting involved,” he said.

“I’m sure I can keep this under the radar and keep her out of it.”

“Whatever you want, Daisy. Just turn up,” he said.

“I promise I will.”
