Chapter 13
Embry
Corvinus makes everything in the complex world we live in seem so simple but I’m not about to let him lose his job because of his relationship with me.
They’ll review my application, probably tell me I’m not qualified or some other shitty answer because they don’t trust me, but at least then I’ll know for sure.
I would have at least tried. Corvinus looks up.
“Settle your mind. Nothing like that is going to happen, Embry. Let me worry about this one, okay? Now eat so I can take you home.”
I slide in beside him and add a variety of freshly picked fruit to my plate, with a large serving of scrambled eggs, bacon, and a blueberry muffin. He laughs as I take a bite of my muffin first. “There’s enough sugar on the top of that thing to keep you lit up for the entire journey home.”
I give Corvinus a wink. “I’ll be the judge of that, vampire. Don’t mess with a girl’s sugar source. It won’t end well for you.”
He grins, scooping a large portion of eggs, sausage, and English muffin onto his plate, piling it high with bacon and cheese. “Protein junky,” I tease, taking another bite and then pouring us each a glass of Descallia Red. “For the trip home.”
We finish quickly, and I make easy work of cleanup by practicing my new witchy tricks.
“I’m only doing this for a short time. I just want to know what it feels like, but then I’m going to tuck it away.
I’ve decided I’m only going to tell a few people about my powers.
I think it’s better that the secret be kept, not only for myself, but for the defense of the vampires, too.
I know Devora knows, but besides her, who knows how many other factions out there could be after the vampires’ power, you know?
It’s not like the rogues won’t be back at some point. ”
“Unfortunately, you’re not wrong at all. You ready?”
“Ready and at your service my lord.” I give him a playful bow causing him to grin. “Remember that pose for the playroom, love. But it’s not going to keep your ass from the heat of my hand when we get home.”
My mouth gapes. “What?”
His eyes light up with amusement. “You were fairly warned about your little disappearing act, on more than one occasion if I recall.”
I swallow and his eyes track the movement. I swear that arrogant dark-hearted beast sees everything.
He laughs out loud. “I did hear that. Now let’s go before this dark-hearted beast decides to put you over my knee right now for your sassy little mouth.”
“You forgot arrogant. It was arrogant, dark-hearted beast. Get it right, vampire.”
Corvinus swats my ass, not gently at all. “Let’s go home, love. We have much to do tonight.”
