Chapter 19

CHAPTER NINETEEN

The atmosphere in Ellie Hamilton’s office was heavy with expectation as Emma sat in one of the chairs around a large circular table, her hands clenched in her lap.

Vanessa sat beside her, calm and composed, her quiet presence grounding Emma more than she could say.

On the other side of the desk sat the social worker, a woman in her mid-forties with kind eyes and a calming air about her. Emma felt both nervous and reassured.

To Nia’s left sat Carmen and Ben.

Emma had half expected them to appear via video link, Carmen more so to maintain her physical distance, but they all sat in the very same room, and Emma appreciated it.

They didn’t appear to look overly hostile, but they didn’t seem warm either.

Their expressions were carefully neutral, as though they were here out of obligation rather than any hope of a resolution.

Ellie cleared her throat and offered everyone a smile. “Thank you for coming. I appreciate that this is a sensitive meeting, and I want to start by acknowledging that we’re here because Freya’s well-being is everyone’s top priority.”

A round of polite nods followed, and then silence again.

Emma’s stomach tightened.

Nia leaned forward, her tone gentle but clear. “Before we go any further, I want to clarify a few things from a legal standpoint, because I think it will help inform what happens next.”

Emma nodded, though she wasn’t sure she was ready for what that could be.

“I understand that Freya disclosed her belief that Miss Bradley is her sister during a private conversation,” Nia began, her eyes flicking briefly to Emma before she returned to her notes.

“Miss Bradley…Emma…handled that appropriately. She did not confirm or encourage the idea. It is also my understanding that she met with Ms Hamilton last week to explain the situation and ask for guidance.”

“But she didn’t go to Ms Hamilton right away!” Carmen said suddenly, her gaze pinning Emma to her seat. “Why?”

“I think it’s important to understand that Emma didn’t know what was happening just as much as you and Ben didn’t know.

Nobody is at fault here, Carmen.” Nia cleared her throat.

“Emma has only known about Freya for a couple of weeks. I think we can all agree that some processing time is allowed when such things come to light.”

Carmen folded her arms across her chest and turned away.

Emma’s throat tightened. She didn’t like being talked about rather than to, but she understood it was necessary. She also didn’t want to cut in while Carmen was venting.

“We’ve reviewed the background circumstances,” Nia continued, “and I can confirm that based on newly available information, Freya and Emma are indeed biological sisters.”

Carmen shifted slightly in her seat. Ben sat very still.

Emma felt her heart stutter in her chest, even though she already knew. Hearing it aloud and hearing it from someone official made it real in a way it hadn’t been before.

“Thank you for confirming that, Nia,” Ellie said.

Nia turned her attention to Carmen and Ben. “Now, I’d like to clarify your legal status in Freya’s life. You are not her adoptive parents. You are special guardians, appointed under a Special Guardianship Order. Correct?”

Ben answered first. “Yes.”

Carmen gave a short nod, her jaw set.

Nia continued. “Special guardianship gives you parental responsibility, but it does not sever the child’s legal ties to their birth family.”

Emma’s breath caught.

“In this case,” Nia said carefully. “There is no legal restriction preventing Freya from having contact with her sister. There is no legal requirement that Emma be excluded from her life, now that their biological relationship has come to light.”

Emma blinked, truly stunned by the turn of events.

“I want to be clear that this doesn’t mean there is any pressure on Freya or on you as her guardians to facilitate a sudden or intense relationship.

But it does mean that if Freya wants contact, and Emma wishes to be involved in her life, that’s entirely permissible.

And, from a professional standpoint, we would support a carefully managed introduction process with the appropriate support in place. ”

Vanessa reached for Emma’s hand beneath the table. Emma clung to it like a lifeline. Was she hearing this right? She could be Freya’s sister? Though Emma had hoped and prayed, she hadn’t expected it to come true.

Carmen looked across the desk at Nia. “With all due respect, Freya is still a child. She’s already overwhelmed. The last thing she needs is someone she doesn’t know walking into her life or a new layer of emotional complication. She’s been through enough.”

Nia nodded calmly. “That’s absolutely valid, Carmen. And again, nothing will be forced. We would take Freya’s lead, at her pace, with emotional support offered. But she already knows the truth. She confronted Emma directly. That tells us she’s already navigating this…whether we help her or not.”

A long silence followed, and then Ben finally spoke. “We want to do what’s best for her. That’s always been our aim.”

Emma looked up at them slowly. “And so do I. I’m not trying to replace anyone or step into your role. I just…I’d like the chance to know her. If that’s something she wants.”

Carmen’s expression flickered. The tension gave way briefly to something that looked almost like exhaustion. “You understand how hard this is for us?” Carmen said, her voice barely there. “We’ve raised her for four years now. We’ve protected her from so much. And now this comes out of nowhere.”

“I do understand,” Emma said gently. “And I’m sorry. I wish I’d known. I wish I could have prepared you and myself, but I didn’t ask for this either. I’m just trying to find a way through it without hurting her.”

Vanessa squeezed Emma’s hand. “Emma has been carrying this heavily since Freya came to her. Every decision she’s made has been with Freya’s safety and emotional well-being in mind.”

Carmen looked at Emma again, this time without the hesitancy in her eyes. “Freya talks about you a lot. About netball. About how kind you are.”

Emma’s throat clenched. “I care about her. More than I know how to explain.”

Nia closed her notebook gently. “What I’d suggest is that we take this next step slowly.

We talk with Freya. We gauge how she’s feeling.

If she expresses interest in contact, we begin with something light.

Supported. A letter exchange, maybe. Or a hot chocolate with Emma and her wife in a neutral space. ”

“I’d be happy with that,” Emma said immediately. “Anything that makes her feel safe.”

Ben nodded. Carmen didn’t speak, but she didn’t say no, either.

Ellie offered a small smile. “It’s a difficult road. But I do believe everyone in this room is coming from a place of love. That’s a very good place to start.”

Nia rose, signalling the end of the meeting. “I’ll make contact with Freya and schedule a follow-up. No decisions today. Just movement.”

Everyone stood slowly. Emma thanked Nia, her voice steady but her hands still shaking slightly.

Carmen met her eyes briefly, and this time, she didn’t appear to be challenging in her demeanour.

Ben seemed…indifferent. Perhaps he was resigned to the fact that Emma did deserve a place in Freya’s life.

Ellie walked them out of the office and thanked them for their time, but Vanessa and Emma stayed behind for a couple of minutes.

Vanessa turned to Emma and took her hands. “Are you okay?”

“Yeah, I think so.”

“You were brilliant.”

Emma released a deep breath. It wasn’t certainty she felt, not yet, but it felt a lot like hope. “Babe,” Emma whispered. “Do you think she’ll want to see me?”

Vanessa squeezed her hands. “Oh, I think she already does.”

Vanessa stood at the stove, stirring the sauce that would accompany dinner, her mind going over everything that had been said during the meeting earlier today.

She wasn’t hungry, not after such an intense couple of hours, but she needed something to focus on.

Something repetitive and quiet. The gentle clink of the spoon against the pan was far more soothing than she’d expected it to be.

Behind her, Emma paced the kitchen floor like a restless cat, full of energy, her eyes bright in a way that Vanessa hadn’t seen in weeks now.

“Nia said I can write to her,” Emma said for what must have been the third time.

“A letter. Or maybe something digital, like an email. I wonder if she’d prefer that.

Kids are all into digital these days, aren’t they?

I draw the line at a voice note, though.

” Emma laughed. “Oh, God. What if she’s into sending stupid GIFs and memes like I am?

You hate them, but they always tickle me.

” Vanessa knew Emma was just saying everything that came to mind, but God, she wished she’d stop and take a breath.

“What if we end up having a private joke over a picture of a dancing tree or something random like that?!”

Vanessa smiled but didn’t turn away from the stove. “One step at a time, baby.”

“I know, I know,” Emma said quickly, still pacing back and forth across the tiles.

“I know it’s just the beginning, but still.

Carmen didn’t even push back today. And Ben was.

..surprisingly okay. He seems like a nice guy.

And Nia. Did you hear what she said? Nothing’s stopping me from having contact with Freya.

Actually, more than just contact. I’m allowed to be in her life, Vanessa. I’m allowed to have a sister.”

Vanessa finally turned and leaned against the counter, watching her wife with a smile. “I heard her. I was sitting next to you, Emma.”

Emma stopped and gripped the back of one of the dining chairs. “I just…I can’t believe it. A month ago, I didn’t even know she existed. But now she’s real. What’s happening is real.”

“It’s definitely real.”

“I wonder if she prefers cats or dogs. I definitely think she prefers crisps to chocolate, like me.” Emma grinned, and Vanessa’s heart burst from the sheer look of joy in her eyes. “Do you think she cries at films like me?”

“Baby, you cry at adverts.”

Emma flung her arms out. “She might, too! What if she’s like me in a hundred tiny ways we haven’t even seen yet?”

Vanessa crossed the kitchen slowly and placed her hands on Emma’s arms, steadying her. “Breathe.”

“I am breathing. I’m breathing easier than I have in a long time.”

“You’re spiralling. Just…the happy kind for once.” Vanessa slid her hands up to Emma’s shoulders and gave them a soft squeeze. “And I get it, I really do, but it’s a lot. It’s been a lot. For both of us.”

“I know, I’m sorry.” Emma’s eyes softened. “But you’ve been amazing, babe. You really have. I couldn’t have gone into that meeting today without you next to me.”

“I’ll always be next to you,” Vanessa said as she tucked Emma’s hair behind her ear. “But I need you to give yourself a minute. Because what comes next may not move as fast as you want it to. It could even look differently to the way you’re imagining.”

“Yeah.” Emma nodded, but her voice was still a little too bright. Vanessa wasn’t trying to ruin this, but she did want Emma to be realistic. “But just the chance, Vanessa. The chance to know her and be there for her. That’s everything to me.”

“And you’ll have that chance one way or another.”

“I keep thinking…what if one day she wants to come here? Like properly? To stay the night or spend the weekend with us. We could clear out Lauren’s old room. I’ll paint and order a new bed. You know, turn it into something that feels like hers. Not a guest room, but Freya’s room.”

Vanessa drew back ever so slightly, caught off guard by the speed of it all. “Emma…”

“Too much?”

Vanessa hesitated. “Not too much. Just too soon.”

Emma exhaled a deep breath, her excitement settling. “Right. Yeah.”

Vanessa kissed her forehead. “She’s not a blank canvas. She has a life and a home. She has people she considers her parents, and people who love her like they’re her parents. I don’t want you to think I’m not on board, I absolutely am, but this will be complicated, baby. For all of you.”

Emma nodded slowly. “I just want her to feel like she has options. Like there’s room for her here if she ever wants it.”

Vanessa smiled. “And there is room for her. Always, Emma. But maybe we shouldn’t move the furniture and redecorate just yet.”

Emma, finally realising what Vanessa was saying, laughed.

“Yeah, okay. You’re right.” She leaned into Vanessa’s touch and sighed.

“I knew I’d felt something that day when I met her for the first time.

She looked so much like me, and I thought I was imagining it, but now…

I just keep wondering what other similarities we share.

You know, what other parts of us are the same. ”

The trauma, Vanessa thought to herself. You probably share the same trauma.

“You’ll find out,” Vanessa said. “But let her show you. Don’t try to imagine it all before she’s even had the chance to speak.”

“I’ll try.” Emma leaned forward and pressed a kiss to Vanessa’s cheek. “Thanks for pulling me back down to earth.”

Vanessa smiled as she turned back to the stove. “I always do.”

“Hey,” Emma hovered nearby, the excitement and the energy beginning to wear off. “Can we eat on the couch tonight?”

“We can eat in bed if you want,” Vanessa said over her shoulder. “You’ve earned it.”

Emma sighed dramatically. “God, you really know how to seduce a woman.”

Vanessa laughed, and for the first time all day, her shoulders eased. Maybe they weren’t out of the woods yet, but there was light breaking through the trees. “It’s why you married me. We both know this already.”
