Chapter 7 Wren

WREN

Parker’s light gray eyes scanned me with concern and he frowned. “Are you sure you should be going out?” he asked, pushing away from the desk and rising to his feet.

I ran my fingers through my dark hair and grabbed my purse off the bed.

“I’ll be fine,” I assured him, but he didn’t look convinced.

His lips pulled into a tight line as he crossed his arms over his chest. “Kali and I are just going to K no one else was around.

“I think Nikolai might be after me.”

Her brows furrowed. “Why do you think that? Nikolai hasn’t bothered Emma, Ethan, Peyton, or the others since his failed attempts at their lives.

You already survived that craziness with Peyton.

I highly doubt he’s going to come after you.

He’s only interested in the people involved with the Dark Side. ”

The elevator doors opened into the lobby, where there were too many people for me to explain. “We’ll talk more in the car,” I said, following her out of the hotel.

The second we walked outside, it felt like we were being watched. I stopped mid-stride and looked around the parking lot. People were getting in and out of cars, but I saw nothing unusual. However, it didn’t mean that someone wasn’t lurking.

“Wren, what’s wrong?” Kali asked, her voice low and cautious.

I linked my arm with hers and spoke through my smile. “I think someone’s watching us. Just keep walking. Act like nothing’s wrong.”

She chuckled and squeezed my arm. “Someone is watching us, Wren.” We made it to her little black convertible and her grin widened. “Get in. There’s something I need to tell you, too. Hopefully, it’ll ease your worries about Nikolai.”

Quickly, I opened the passenger’s side door and slid in, my curiosity getting the better of me. Once safely inside, away from prying ears, Kali turned to me and smiled sheepishly.

“I need you to keep an open mind. Ripp, Kase, and my brother don’t know.”

I stared at her as if she’d lost her mind. “What the hell have you done?”

She bit her lip and peered around the parking lot. “I’m impressed you could sense someone out there.”

I shrugged impatiently. “Living on the streets can do that to you. I can sense danger from a mile away.”

Her smile faded. “I hate you had to live like that.”

I waved off the comment, ready to hear what she had to say. “It made me strong,” I countered quickly.

Kali blew out a sigh and faced me. “Okay, tell me about Nikolai first and then I’ll tell you my secret.”

She started up the car and we headed on our way to K she reminded me of myself. Never once have I seen her afraid of anything. I reached over and gently took her hand in mine.

“Please be careful, Kali.”

She smirked. “I always am. Now, come on, it’s time for us to have fun and eat good food. We can’t let that fucktard, Nikolai, ruin everything in our lives.”

That was true. And I had already told myself I wouldn’t stop living my life because of him. I let her go of her hand and opened my door.

“Let’s go. No more thinking of that asshole tonight.”

Kali’s grin widened. “Exactly.”
