6. Mara #2

The sheets are dark and cool against my skin when I lie down, and the mattress dips slightly under my weight.

Julian follows, but he doesn't lie beside me.

He stands and looks down at me, and there is something in his expression that I can't name.

Something that sits between hunger and calculation, between want and strategy.

And I understand, with a clarity that is almost painful, that this is what it feels like to be seen by someone who sees everything.

He takes my hands and lifts them, one at a time, above my head.

My palms are still tender where the bandages were, the new skin raw and sensitive, and his touch there is careful in a way that contradicts everything else about the way he's handling this.

He presses my wrists against the mattress, gently, and holds them there for a moment before releasing.

"Keep them there unless I tell you otherwise."

He doesn't move immediately. He stays where he is, standing at the edge of the bed, and looks down at me with an expression that has shifted from command to something quieter.

A question, asked without words. His eyes travel over my face the way they travel over data, reading, parsing, checking for the thing that doesn't belong.

He is looking for the fracture point. The place where the composure breaks and the real answer surfaces.

I meet his gaze. My hands stay where he put them. My breathing is even. The tremor from the hallway is gone, or I've buried it deep enough that it doesn't show. What he sees on my face is the truth. I am here and I chose this. Whatever comes next, I am not going to look away from it.

Something settles in his expression, the question answered. He nods, once, barely perceptible, and begins to undress.

The shirt comes off with the same economy he applies to everything.

Underneath it is the body I have been aware of for weeks without having seen.

Lean-muscled, functional, built for survival rather than display.

The scar along his right ribcage catches the lamplight, a thin raised line he doesn't acknowledge.

He simply continues, and the matter-of-factness of it feels like something entirely.

He isn't performing for me. He's simply here.

His hands move to his belt, and I watch as he unfastens it with the same unhurried precision.

The rest follows, and when he's fully bare, the sight of him steals something from my lungs.

His cock is hard, thick, the head flushed and already leaking slightly.

The evidence of his arousal is stark against the control he maintains everywhere else, and the contrast makes heat pool low in my belly.

He is next to me on the mattress then, and the first kiss lands.

It is not gentle. It is not soft. It is controlled in the way a blade is controlled.

Precise, deliberate, with an edge underneath that I feel more than see.

His mouth on mine is a claim. A declaration without words, and underneath it, something hungrier than either of us has acknowledged.

I taste coffee on him, and the clean soap smell fills my lungs, and my hands ache to reach for him and stay exactly where he put them.

His hands begin to map me.

There is no other word for it. He touches me the way he works.

Methodically, thoroughly, with an attention to detail that borders on obsessive.

His palms move across my ribs, my stomach, the soft skin beneath my breasts.

He finds the places where I respond and he stays there, pressing, circling, until I gasp, and then he moves on and comes back to them later, and the pattern is so precise, so deliberate, that I understand what he's doing before I can articulate it.

Building a map of my body the way he builds maps of databases, and the intimacy of being read that thoroughly is almost more than I can hold.

His mouth follows his hands. Down the line of my throat, and when his lips brush the mole at the base of it, something in the way he pauses, just barely, tells me that particular detail means something to him, though I don't know why.

Then lower. His tongue traces the underside of my breast and I bite down on my own lip to keep from making a sound, and the restraint costs me, and he feels it.

I know he feels it because his hand slides down and presses, once, deliberately, between my thighs, and the contact is so precise, so exactly calibrated to the place where I am already aching, that my hips lift off the mattress involuntarily.

His fingers slide through the wetness there, slick and unhurried, and the sound it makes in the quiet room is obscene.

He murmurs against my skin, and the observation is clinical but the heat underneath it is not.

He circles my clit once, twice, with exactly the right pressure, and my breath catches audibly.

My hands move. I reach for him without thinking. Reach for his shoulders, his hair, anything to anchor myself to. His hand closes around my wrist so fast I feel the air move before I feel the contact.

"What did I say?"

The words are quiet, not angry. The voice of someone who set a boundary and expects it to hold, and the expectation itself is the thing that undoes me.

"I'm sorry," I breathe. The words come out rougher than I intend, scraped raw by everything happening in my body, and the apology isn't performative.

It's genuine. I overstepped and broke the agreement.

And the strange, dark thing is that surrendering it—accepting the correction, putting my hands back where he told me—feels less like submission and more like relief.

Like being given a structure to exist inside when everything else has been taken away.

He rewards it. His hand returns to where it was, but he doesn't move.

Not yet. His eyes find mine in the low light, and the look in them is different from the command that came before.

It's a check. Quiet, deliberate, stripped of anything soft.

Are you still here? The question has no words. It doesn't need them.

I am still here.

Something in his expression unlocks. Two fingers slide inside me, then three, and the stretch is immediate and intense.

The pressure and the rhythm build. Steady, escalating, his thumb working my clit while his fingers curl and stroke inside, finding the spot that makes my thighs shake.

He watches my face the entire time for the exact moment when I am close enough to fracture.

"That's it," he says, low and rough.

The words land like sparks on gasoline. I am trembling, slick around his hand, my hips moving in small helpless circles against the pressure he's providing, and every nerve in my body is wound so tight I could break from the slightest shift.

He stops.

I make a sound that isn't quite a word. Something stripped and involuntary, pulled from the place in my chest where the tension has been building for weeks.

My body is trembling. My skin is flushed and slick with heat and I am staring up at him with my hands pressed against the mattress above my head and every muscle in me is pulled taut as wire.

And underneath all of it, beneath the want and the heat and the way my body has been taking apart and reassembling itself around his hands for the last hour, there is the other thing.

The thing I carried into this room and have been holding down since the hallway.

The knowledge that this body, this exact version of this body, is running out of time.

The erasure is almost complete. In days, maybe less, I will not exist across every system that has significance.

The woman on this bed will be replaced by someone else, someone Julian built, someone with different records and a different name and skin that has never been touched by anyone who knew what she was made of.

This is the last time anyone touches her the way she actually is.

The last time she gets to feel something and know that the feeling belongs to her, to the real her, before that woman is quietly closed like a file.

The terror of that is enormous. I swallow it whole and let it sit in my chest alongside everything else, and I do not look away from him.

He positions himself between my thighs. The weight of him settles against me, and the contact is maddening.

His cock presses against my entrance, thick and hard and so close, but not enough.

He holds still and he waits. He watches my face and the wait is deliberate, calculated, designed to strip away every pretense between us until there is nothing left but need.

"Please," I say.

His expression doesn't change. "Please what?"

The words cost me something. Not pride, pride is a luxury I surrendered weeks ago in this apartment. It costs me the last fiction that I am in control of anything here, including myself. And the truth of it, the raw and honest truth, is that I am not. I haven't been since I walked through his door.

"Please, Julian."

He moves into me in one slow, deep stroke that takes the breath out of my lungs and replaces it with something else entirely.

The sensation is immense, not painful but overwhelming.

His cock fills me so completely that for a moment I can't think, can't process anything beyond the physical fact of him inside me and the weight of his body pressing me into the mattress.

The stretch is perfect and terrible, the fullness absolute, and I feel every inch of him as he sinks in until there is nowhere left to go.

"Fuck," he breathes, and the word is stripped of its usual control.

He stops.
