EPILOGUE

August

Watching my fated mate lose her smile when her blue eyes land on me is a blow to the chest.

“What are you doing here?” she asks me, glancing around like she doesn’t want to be seen with me. I didn’t expect to find her in Chaos, but when Laurel told me she’d be here, I had to come. Laurel’s words have been haunting me ever since she said them—that Milana needs to be on our side or something bad will happen.

How will she ever be on our side? She hates me—we killed her father.

“Can we talk?” I ask her, shoving my hands in my pockets.

I know she feels the pull between us. She has to. It’s fate, magic, whatever you want to call it, and yet she denies what’s there. I might not be a king or have the strongest magic in the realm, but I’m a good male. I will love and care for her. I’ll do anything to be the one to make her smile.

“As long as you don’t try and kidnap me and lock me up again,” she replies, scowling.

I hate to admit it, but Saylor was right to let her go. She looks better, her cheeks have filled out more, and the dark circles underneath her eyes are gone.

“I won’t.”

“Okay,” she agrees, leaving the inn with me to step outside.

“I want to say I’m sorry,” I start, shifting on my feet. Her long blonde hair blows in the wind and wraps around my arms.

“Me too,” she replies, a little sadly.

And then she stabs me with a needle into my shoulder, staring at me as I fall to my knees. “You shouldn’t have come looking for me, August.”

“Milana…”

I’m unable to move my body. Whatever she gave me is paralyzing me. So when she zips me away and leaves me in a cell, I can do nothing but watch.

“Let’s see how you like it… mate ,” she whispers, swallowing hard. “Welcome to what’s left of the rebellion.”
