Chapter Thirty-Eight
Tommy
I have been dragged around every fucking shop in Mahón, the capital of Menorca. If it was just Maya and me I wouldn’t be as bothered but it isn’t. God these girls can shop. Luckily for them the shops stay open late here as they close for siesta in the day time.
I sit back and enjoy the view of the port from my seat in the Mediterranean restaurant. I booked here as soon as we decided to come out, knowing it has the best paella in the city. Maya mentioned on the plane how much she wants to try an authentic one and, whatever my girl wants, she gets.
It’s just me, Max and Jenson at the restaurant while the girls are finishing up shopping, the team a few steps behind them.
I don’t want her to feel like all her freedom has gone but it still kills me to be sat here without her.
Jenson is the one getting the updates from Freddie and the thing that is preventing me from running to her right now is that they have tabs on Jake.
He hasn’t left the UK but we don’t know if he is working alone or has some psycho friends helping him.
Whilst we were on the plane, Maya had spoken to me about their relationship, about the way he had treated her and some of the vile things he used to say to her.
It was more than enough to make me want to strangle him.
“We should have done this sooner,” Max says as he leans back in his chair, sipping on his beer. “Everyone seems so much happier now, especially me. I went down to that nudist beach on my walk today. I let my junk blow in the wind. It was great,” He says deep in thought.
Jenson screws up his nose. “Fuck off Max. I’ve been to that beach before, it’s like a sausage fest with the amount of dick and balls swinging around everywhere.” He says. I can’t control the laugh that bursts out of me. These two fucking kill me.
“A load of boobs too!” Max protests.
“Yeah, from women in their eighties,” Jenson scoffs in reply.
“Oh piss off. I’ve seen more today than what you’re getting.”
“I’d much rather not get any than see those sights,” He retorts.
Their banter bounces back and forward as my mind begins to wander. I feel like a drug addict, waiting for Maya to get here is like waiting for my next hit of cocaine. How did I manage to go all those years without her?
I think back to the time I approached Max about opening an office in Worcester, he knew straight away why I wanted to do it, I could see it with the look he had given me.
Nevertheless, he agreed. I had never told any of my siblings about my feelings for Maya growing up.
Well, I never told anyone at all, but me and Max have always been the closest. I don’t think I could have hidden anything from him, even now.
I glance along the dock, for the fiftieth time hoping to see her.
This time I do, she’s laughing and joking with our friends, holding a shit tonne of bags in her hands.
She looks so happy, happier than I’ve seen her in a long while.
I’m just relieved she finally gave in and took my credit card with her.
“Hey handsome,” she greets me, leaning down to kiss me before dropping into her seat. The rest of them take a seat too, the team sitting on the table next to us so they have their own space.
“Did you have fun with the girls?” I ask as I take her hand in mine. We’ve only been apart for an hour, it feels like fucking days.
“I loved it, the shops here are amazing. We found a night market in the square too, they had the most beautiful clothes and trinkets. I might have gone a little overboard,” She glances at me worriedly.
“Baby, don’t worry about it,” I say as I pick up our joined hands and leave a kiss on the back of hers.
“I’ll pay you back once I can finally be back in the public again.” I raise an eyebrow at her. We’ve been through all this already. “I knoooow you’re not bothered,” She drawls out. “But I am, I hate not having my own independence.”
“Soon enough you will be able to work all the crazy hours you want.” I smile at her. Loving how independent she is, she always has been.
I lean over to the table and pick up a drink for her. “I hope you like this. They had no pornstar Martinis but this sounded like something you’d all like.” It has some fruity shit in it that they all seem to go for.
She leans into the drink in my hands, her eyes never straying from mine as her lips wrap around the straw. She even makes drinking look sexy. The last thing I need is a hard on when I’m wearing fucking linen trousers.
“Mmm,” She moans. “You know me so well.”
Before I get chance to rip her clothes off and ravish her right here on the table for all to see, a few waiters come over with a huge pan of paella and set it in the middle of the table. One by one they go around us dishing out a small portion each to start.
“This smells bloody incredible,” Maya hums as she dramatically breathes in the food.
“It really does. It’s huge too, we will never eat all of this!” Lucy says with wide eyes as she takes in the monstrous pan.
Maya and Fallon eye each other before laughing. “Oh trust me, we will eat all of this and still get desert.” You can see why these two are best friends.
“Us too!” Blair adds. “We aren’t shy girls when it comes to food.” She says as she starts to dig in.
“Holy shit, this is so good,” Maya moans after she has taken her first bite. It’s like she is trying to get me arrested for indecent exposure tonight.
If she thinks this is good, she is going to love it when I take her to Bar Pons one night. An authentic Spanish restaurant that’s family owned and known for the best paella to all the locals. Luckily, it’s only a fifteen minute walk from our place.
The rest of the night goes by in a blur, by the end of the meal everyone has decided it’s time to head back for some much needed sleep. The girls saying they need to wake early to catch as many rays as they can.
As we leave the girls spot an ice cream shop and we stop to grab some as we wait for a taxi to arrive, enjoying the warm night air. Tonight has been perfect. We ate so much food, I don’t know how the girls have room for ice cream.
The water seems to sparkle from the reflections of the lights surrounding it.
I look down at my girl and smile, her hand in mine.
Even with all this shit that’s going on around us, I realise just how lucky I am, we’re in a beautiful country, with our best of friends, and we have each other. If only it could stay this way forever.
