Chapter 23

Chapter Twenty-Three

The world felt impossibly still beneath the falling snow.

The square glowed with warm amber light from the lanterns strung across the trees, their branches heavy with frost. Pine Hollow’s great Christmas tree towered above us.

Its golden ornaments catching shards of moonlight, its star gleaming like a beacon over the silent night.

“Tell me to stop,” Oliver whispered.

I couldn’t. Not when his breath touched mine, or when warmth radiated from him into the freezing air. Even when everything in me was leaning forward, helplessly drawn to him.

So instead, I rose onto my toes and our lips met.

It was soft, unbelievably soft, almost fragile.

A nervous brush of mouths that felt more like a confession than a kiss.

His hand lifted to cradle my cheek, thumb feather-light along my skin, as if he were afraid, I might disappear.

The snow fell around us in slow, glowing spirals, settling in my hair, melting against my cheeks as goosepimples brushed my shoulders.

Oliver kissed me like he’d been holding his breath for days.

When we broke apart, just inches, my pulse was wild and unsteady. He rested his forehead against mine, breathing me in, his voice a low tremor shaped by something he didn’t have words for yet.

“Brianna… I shouldn’t want this as much as I do.”

“Then we’re both in trouble,” I murmured.

His breath caught. His eyes flickered over my face as if memorising something he’d never allow himself to forget. Before either of us could stop ourselves, his lips found mine again.

This kiss wasn’t tentative. It wasn’t careful. It was a slow, aching hunger, restrained but spilling with emotion.

I clutched his coat, pulling him closer instinctively. He responded by sliding one hand to the small of my back, the other threading gently through my hair as if the very feel of me soothed something inside him.

Heat unfurled through me, starting low and spreading outward in a way that made my knees feel unsteady.

His mouth moved against mine with a kind of longing that made my chest ache, filled with a wanting but also tender, like he’d been waiting years instead of days.

When we finally separated for breath, we both stood there trembling, not just from the cold, but from the rawness of it all.

The music from the ball drifted faintly through the night, muted by the thick stone walls of the hall. Somewhere across the square, a group of teenagers laughed as they passed, their boots crunching through the snow, but all I heard was the sound of my own heartbeat.

He brushed a strand of hair from my face, fingers brushing my jaw. “We should go inside. You’re freezing.”

“Not back to the ball,” I whispered, tightening my coat around myself. “I can’t walk in there after–after this.”

His eyes softened with understanding. “Where then?”

I hesitated only long enough to breathe.

“My flat.”

Something changed in his expression. Interest, surprise, a quiet, hopeful heat. But he didn’t move until I did.

I turned toward the path, snow crunching beneath my shoes.

He walked beside me, silent except for the soft rhythm of our footsteps.

Pine Hollow at night was its own kind of enchantment: chimneys steaming into the star-scattered sky, wreaths glowing on every door, windows lit with warm lamps and Christmas trees.

The entire town seemed wrapped in storybook stillness.

“Everything looks different tonight,” Oliver said quietly.

“How so?”

He glanced toward the rows of cottages. “Brighter. Like it’s alive. I never noticed it before.”

“That’s because you weren’t looking before.”

He didn’t argue. He simply threaded his fingers through mine, as if the gesture belonged there. When we reached my front door, he paused, watching as I fumbled slightly with my cold-numbed fingers to get the key into the lock. His hand lifted, hesitant, then gently closed around mine, steadying it.

His fingers were warm. Grounding.

The door creaked open, releasing the faint scent of lingering bread, a scent that always lived in the walls.

“Brianna…” he murmured, stopping me before I took the first step inside.

I turned back to him. Snowflakes clung to his dark hair and eyelashes, melting into tiny droplets on his skin. His gaze searched mine with a kind of fear and wonder tangled together.

“Are you sure?” he asked. “I don’t want you to do anything you’ll regret.”

Regret. The word stung in a way I didn’t expect.

“I don’t regret anything,” I whispered. “Not tonight.”

I let him follow me inside. The narrow entryway light flickered on as I pushed it open, spilling a soft golden glow across the small hall. A cluster of my shoes sat beside the radiator, and the faint scent of vanilla and pine drifted from the living room upstairs.

I stepped inside, holding the door gently so it wouldn’t bang in the quiet. Oliver followed, brushing snow from his shoulders as he shut out the cold.

The flat was warm in a way the bakery never could be at night.

Lived-in warmth, memory warmth. The faint hum of the old heater filled the silence along with the distant creak of the building settling in the cold.

A string of fairy lights ran along the banister, casting a soft amber shimmer up the narrow staircase.

We moved toward the stairs together. I gathered my skirt slightly, careful not to drag it on the first step, the soft fabric whispering around my legs.

Halfway up, Oliver slowed behind me.

I felt him before I heard his quiet shift of breath, the subtle hesitation. Then his fingers brushed the fabric at my hip, the lightest touch, as though asking permission without words.

My heart fluttered, but I didn’t pull away. I didn’t stop him.

The fairy lights reflected gently off the varnished wood of the stairs as we reached the top landing. I turned toward him, breath catching when I found him so close, close enough that the warmth of him wrapped around me in a soft, dizzying wave.

The snow melting in his hair left tiny droplets on his temples. His chest rose unevenly, as if he were fighting to steady himself. The faint glow of the living room behind me painted his face in warm shadows.

He looked… wrecked, hopeful maybe. And he wasn’t the only one. His breath touched my lips, seconds later I reached out, fingers curling around his lapel, tugging him forward just enough.

Just enough that he understood.

His mouth found mine again, rougher this time deeper and filled with something fragile and overwhelming.

His hands framed my face, holding me with a reverence that made my heart ache.

The world outside kept snowing. The lights kept glowing.

And everything inside me pulled toward him with terrifying clarity.

Then he pulled back, hesitated for a moment before leaning in once more, his other hand running through my hair. His lips crashed against mine in a wild, hungry kiss that left us both breathless.

This time I opened up to him without question. Our tongues danced together as our bodies pressed closer until I could feel the hard planes of muscles beneath his shirt against my own softness; it was intoxicating how much we fit together, like pieces of one another, made to be this way.

And just like that, we were spinning out of control; caught up in the moment and each other, ignoring everything else around us while every sense was heightened by this connection we shared.

The world seemed to stop spinning as he drew back from me, eyes wide with fear for what was happening but also filled with something raw and vulnerable.... Something new.

As his lips crushed mine once again, I moaned softly into his mouth, unable to control the tidal wave of emotions coursing through my veins.

My hands moved between us to unbuckle his belt and unbutton his pants.

Sensing my intentions, he slid a strap from my dress off my shoulder and down my arm; then without hesitation pressed his warm hand against my exposed breast, kneading and teasing my nipple.

Soon, we were both completely naked, our clothes discarded in a trail leading to the kitchen.

He lifted me up on the counter, my legs parting instinctively as he stepped closer, his erection nudging against my inner thigh.

With one swift movement, he slid into me; a mixture of pain and pleasure as we joined together.

We moved with urgency; each thrust driving us further toward ecstasy. His fingers dug into my hips as he buried himself within me again and again, our bodies slick with sweat. Our moans and gasps filled the space around us; a symphony of desire that only grew louder and more desperate.

The sharp edge of the kitchen counter bit into my back, but I welcomed the discomfort because it meant he was still here with me, real and tangible.

He looked down at me, eyes burning with passion as he thrust harder.

His lips captured mine once again, tasting of salt and desperation.

I could feel him getting closer to his release; the rhythm of our bodies synced as we raced toward the inevitable crescendo.

As he came inside me, his mouth left mine to be replaced by a painfully sweet groan that echoed through the room. Shudders ran through his frame before he collapsed onto me; heavy breaths mixing with my own in the cold, silent air of the room now filled only by our love song.

His forehead pressed against mine as we held each other tightly; hearts pounding in unison against each other's chests while outside snow kept falling on this night when everything changed...forever?

Our kisses seemed to linger as we both tried to catch our breath, his soft lips brushing over mine tenderly now that our passion had been satisfied for the moment.

I sat staring into his eyes, taking in every detail.

From their fierce intensity to the way they sparkled with unshed tears.

It was as if he could see right through me and knew exactly what I needed before I even did.

As we stayed locked together like this, lost in our own little world, my mind wandered back to how this all began and what we were going to do after this.
