Epilogue

Lucy

Weeks after our wedding it feels like the world has shifted. It’s quiet. Peaceful. The kind of morning I used to long for — one where I could wake up without the weight of the past bearing down on me.

I roll over and glance at Liam, still asleep beside me. His features are relaxed, calm, the way they always are when he’s at ease. I’ve never seen him look so... content. It’s a look that fills me with a kind of warmth I can’t quite explain.

I reach over and brush a lock of hair from his face, and he stirs slightly, his eyes flickering open. He smiles when he sees me, and for a moment, the world is just the two of us.

"Hey sweetheart," he murmurs, his voice still thick with sleep.

"Hey," I reply, my heart swelling at the sight of him.

We lie there for a moment, the silence between us comfortable and easy. I’ve never felt more at peace than I do now. The kind of peace I’ve always wanted but never knew how to find. And now, with him by my side, I have it.

“You’re mine,” he says softly, almost as if he’s still trying to convince himself that this is real.

“And you’re mine,” I whisper back, my voice filled with a certainty that has grown with every passing day.

He reaches out, taking my hand, and we lay there for a while, just holding each other. No rush. No expectations. Just the two of us, letting the world outside carry on without us for a little longer.

After some time, we decide to take a walk. The sun is shining, the air crisp and fresh. We head out to the beach, making our way toward the lighthouse. It’s a short walk from our place, but the view is always breathtaking.

The lighthouse stands tall, an unmovable symbol of hope and guidance.

I never thought I would find my own kind of stability — the kind of love that anchors you when everything else is uncertain.

But here I am, standing beside Liam, my hand in his, knowing that this is exactly where I’m supposed to be.

I smile at him, my heart fluttering. “I never thought I’d have this kind of life. I always thought... I always thought I was meant for something else. Something more complicated. But with you, everything feels simple. It feels right.”

“It’s the same for me,” he admits, looking down at me with such tenderness. “I used to think I had everything figured out. Business, success, wealth... But none of that matters if I don’t have you.”

I feel a rush of warmth flood through me at his words. I never expected to find someone who made me feel this way. I never thought I deserved this kind of love. But here I am, with him, and I know this is the beginning of something incredible.

After we return home, we spend the rest of the day on the beach behind the house, swimming, sunning and reading.

I love these days when Liam and I are both home, without the need to hurry to get to work.

I love that I still have a place at the clinic where I can get all the animal-love I can handle.

And I want to be sure that I never take this for granted.

That evening, I find myself sitting at the desk in our living room. It feels more like a home than I’ve ever known, and I can’t help but smile.

The journal I’ve been writing in since I first arrived here sits open in front of me. It’s filled with memories of everything that’s led up to this moment. Of the pain, the uncertainty, and then the hope that grew with every day spent with Liam.

I write about the wedding, about how I’ve never felt more loved, more whole. How Liam makes everything better, just by being himself. I write about how my heart has changed — how I’ve finally found the courage to let go of the past and embrace the future.

And I write about him. About us.

With the ferrets playing around my feet, their tiny paws making soft clicking noises as they scurry around, I feel a peace I’ve never known.

I close the journal and look out the window, where the last traces of sunlight are slipping away.

Liam walks in, his presence filling the room. He sits down beside me, wrapping his arm around my shoulders.

“What are you thinking about?” he asks softly, his fingers brushing my hair.

“Everything,” I reply, my voice soft but full of meaning. “How far we’ve come. How much we’ve been through. How much I’ve learned to love you.”

He smiles, kissing my temple gently. “And I’ve learned to love you, too. More than I ever thought I could. I’m so damn lucky, Lucy.”

I turn to face him, my heart swelling with love. “We’re lucky together.”

He leans in, kissing me softly, the sweetness of the moment hanging between us. For the first time in a long time, I feel completely at peace.

“We have a good life ahead of us, Lucy,” he says, his voice filled with conviction. “No matter what comes, we’ll face it together.”

I nod, tears welling in my eyes. “Together,” I whisper.

Later that evening, the community celebrates our union.

The “Kings” and their families gather, filling the town square with laughter and warmth. I watch as Liam stands beside Nate and Bryan, laughing and talking with such familiarity. They truly are the best buddies of Ocean Bay and always will be, I’m sure.

The bond they share is evident in the way they joke with each other, the way they support each other. It’s the kind of friendship I’ve always longed for.

And now, it’s the kind of life I get to be a part of, forever.
