Chapter 7

Elena

“What an asshole.” I stare at Reneè as I am seated on one of the coffee tables and she just finished up a customer. “Who does he think he is, assuming he can get me back?”

“Didn’t you break up with him?” Technically she declined his proposal and then broke his heart by breaking up and now he is still obsessed with her even almost a year after she broke his heart.

She stares at me, giving me the death glare. “Same thing.”

“Not really.”

“Whatever.” she groans before taking off her shoes and places her feet on my lap.

“Off.” I push her feet away from my lap. ”I still need to go to work and your feet have an awful smell by the way.”

“Hey! Ana is sick today, so I have been by myself, have some sympathy for your poor best friend.” and places them back on my lap and I just laugh at her.

My phone keeps beeping with notifications on the table. Ben is still bombarding my phone with messages and texts 24/7. My phone has even started to go crazy at some time.

Why can’t guys take a hint? He needs to come to his senses and realise that just because I miss him doesn’t mean that I want him back. Ever.

“I can’t keep it to myself anymore, Charles has been visiting me here the whole week, getting on my nerves and keeps telling me that he is just a paying customer but every time he is here he keeps making conversations with me and I hate it but also not at the same time.” she spit all the information out in one single breath, breathing like crazy when she is done.

We both have that in common, the reason we never get bored together is that we both talk a lot and I love that for us.

I talk a lot when I am nervous and she talks a lot in general.

Today was absurd at the office. I know most people hate it when I talk a lot and I get it because it can get annoying but today was the first time I didn’t feel annoyed for talking too much because Gabriel made me feel like it is okay that I ramble all nonsense to him and that gives me a feeling of comfort knowing that.

“Okay,” I tell her with disinterest in my face. Her worried expression soon enough transforms into a mad one.

“I fucking hate you sometimes, you do know that?”

“Yeah, and I don’t care.”

“Bitch I am being serious.”

“And Reneè I am seriously late for work. I’ll leave you to Charles, if he isn’t busy working for his brother, then I am sure he will swing by.” I joke around with her, get all my stuff, and bid her a goodbye but not without her flipping me off as I made my way out. I blow her a kiss and make it back to work in ten minutes. The devil with a gorgeous facade is already sitting on his desk, filling out paperwork and glancing back and forth at his laptop and back to his papers. Stress is written all over his face.

Gabriel Harvey is trouble and off limits with a gorgeous face that is impossible not to stare at.

“You seem relaxed.” I joke and that brings his attention away from his work and he looks at me like he is seeing a ghost. I look down at my outfit, finding nothing wrong with it. “You need to stop looking like you are seeing a ghost. It’s creepy.”

He glares at me but in a good way. “Good to have you back, love.”

I groan as he never stops with the nickname, not that I hate it, I don’t but it is driving me crazy and I need him to stop.

“Always pleasant to be here, Mr Harvey.”

“Stop calling me that.”

“Fine. Boss.”

“Now you are just dragging it out.”

“Don’t you just love that?” I joke to him and smile as I playfully roll my eyes. I see his posture relax and he leans back to his seat.

“Very much,” he answers. I ignore his answer and walk to my desk in the room next to his set it back up and get ready for work, again. A lot of paperwork to fill out and proofread in a short amount of time and let’s not forget that there will probably be ten thousand more phone calls than this afternoon from clients.

The next twenty minutes go silently, and not a single sound was uttered from his side or mine so I decided to pop in an earbud to keep me company with music but at that moment the phone rang. I groan and pick up the phone. “Harvey Co. Architecture, here is Elena Ferreira speaking. How may I help you?”

“Amazing speech.” he compliments me and I recognize his voice. Why is he calling instead of just coming to my office?

“Seriously, Gabriel?”

“Of course, love, you have an amazing voice.”

“What do you want?”

“Can you come to my office? I have something very important to talk to you about.”

I hang up the phone and grab my folder and pen. I stroll to his office, he is sitting there, leaning back on his chair as he swings back and forth with a smile on his face.

“You called me?”

“What do you think? About your work here?”

My face transforms into complete confusion at his question. “I just started working here, but I guess it's pretty good. Why are you asking?”

“Here is the thing.” he starts talking but from the fidgeting, his pen falls to the ground and he struggles to pick it up again as it has rolled over to the other end of the table.

I try not to smile or break a laugh as he starts to slowly give up. I never had the urge to get on someone's nerves like I am having with Gabriel and it is so much fun to.

Do not do it.

Nope. An opportunity to tease Gabriel is hard to pass and a must.

“You know, as your assistant I have to always be prepared and have all the stuff so if you need a pen, just ask.”

He looks up from the table, straightens his back, leans back against the table, and keeps his usual poker face on. “Can I have a pen, please?”

I smile as I look through the pockets of my jacket and my smile drops when I can’t find a second pen. “Oh, sorry, don’t have one on me. Maybe check under your desk.” I flash him an innocent slime and I can see his ears spit fire from three meters away.

“That’s okay.” He says, nothing else.

If he is mad, then damn can he suppress his anger well.

We just stay there for a minute in utter silence, not sure what either of us should say.

“Gabriel?”

“Yes, darling?”

“Why did you call me?”

“Multiple reasons but we are only going to discuss one.”

“Okay.” I nod, not sure what else to say anymore.

“This may seem a little weird but I feel like we need to get to know each other.”

“Why?”

“No reason.”

“Okay. Sure.”

“Take a seat.” He guides me to the seat in front of him.

“What if clients call?”

“Then their calls will go straight to me.”

“Are you certain?”

He nods and I place my folder on the table and sit down on the stool in front of him, growing nervous in his presence. I am not sure if that is the general topic he wanted to talk about but I just ignored it. For the next what feels like ten minutes, we start talking about everything.

From our favourite foods, to which we both found out that we both love tacos, and to our favourite bands, songs, books, and everything where you can have a favourite.

I got to finally talk freely about my favourite rom-coms. I love romance movies; my little hopeless romantic heart is in love with those kinds of movies. I could talk for hours about them.

During our conversation he never once looked away from me, always kept eye contact and it was driving me crazy as he was watching me with sharp eyes and his full concentration on me.

The strangest sight I caught was when I left to check on the calls since no one called in half an hour which is unusual. It was then that I noticed the disconnected cord of the telephone.

Did he disconnect the phone before I arrived at his office or was that already done?
