Chapter Eighteen
When I get to work, I can’t see Nikos’s Triumph anywhere and I breathe a sigh of relief as Stavros greets me from the front desk. “Oh, great, you’re here.”
“Yes,” I say, looking around the empty lobby. “Has anyone walked in?”
“No. The phone rang a couple of times, I told them the system was down.”
“Thanks.” I wait a few more seconds in case he forgot to tell me anything related to Nikos’s absence but when he goes back to his kitchen, I sigh and get back to checking next week's reservations.
It’s only a couple of hours into my shift that I have an unread message from him.

Still sure about tonight?
I take a look around to see if anyone’s around, then sit down, my heart beating fast.

Good. Wanted to double-check.
Me
You mean triple check:)
Nikos
Yes.
Me
I’m not going to pressure you into doing anything you don’t want, Nikos. Just say the word, and we call this off and forget I ever suggested it. Nothing’s happened yet.
Nikos
So you say. I clearly remember something already happening. Do you need me to remind you?

No. You don’t. That was different. That was just words.

I feel incredibly stupid, to be honest. I’m really nervous.

I’ve already arranged for Maria to work the night shift tonight; she’ll come a couple of hours earlier so you can get home and get ready.
