28. Chapter Twenty-Eight

Chapter Twenty-Eight

Iwake by the soft buzzing of my phone against my thigh. Turning around, I see Tom’s still asleep as I try to disentangle myself from his arms without waking him. By the time I’m free to move, the phone goes back to its dormant state and I pick it up, swiping the screen to find a message from Nikos.

Nikos

Hey. I just wanted to say hi. See how you’re doing.

Me

I’m good. I was asleep.

Nikos

As you should. It’s late. I was thinking about you. Being inside you.

Me

Me too.

Nikos

Tom’s there?

Me

Where else would he be?

Nikos

Lucky man.

Me

You’re good?

Nikos

I’ve been better. Thinking about everything that’s happened lately.

Me

I know. Listen, I didn’t tell you anything but since you’re on now, I might as well; Tom suggested a night swim whenever you can. Maybe next Sunday if you can.

Nikos

Your husband’s idea? Why do I find that hard to believe?

Me

Well, it’s true. You can totally not come with, I understand. But I haven’t had a night dip in years. It’ll be fun.

I can almost hear my heart beating in my ears and my hands begin to sweat in anticipation of his reply.

He stays silent, and my nerves kick in and I can’t stop myself.

Holding my breath, I count down the seconds until I read his reply.

Nikos

I’ll be in Mytilene for at least two weeks, Lisa. Some things came up that need my attention. I’m sorry.

Me

I see. Well, we can arrange it for when you get back, right?

Nikos

Yes. We can. I’d love to take you guys with me night fishing. You'll love it. Call me if you need anything workwise. Or anything else. Okay?

Me

You got it.

Nikos

Sweet dreams, Lisa.

Me

You, too, Nikos:)
