35. Chapter Thirty-Five

Chapter Thirty-Five

That evening at work I feel like I’ve been riding a non-stop high.

With everyone at the beach or in their rooms, I have the hotel to myself and I make a quick run in the kitchen for some much-needed coffee, then grab my phone and start typing.

Me

So…are you going to tell me what you meant last night?

That’s all I write, hoping he’ll understand what I am trying to say.

I take a long sip and watch his message appear a few minutes later. Thank God he’s on.

Nikos

You’re a smart woman, Lisa. I’m sure you understood what I was trying to say.

Me

Maybe I didn’t, Nikos. Maybe I want to hear you say it. Can we please not play around with words anymore? It’s hard enough as it is.

Nikos

Okay, then. Have it your way. I may have made a mistake in agreeing to do this.

Me

I see. Well, there are only two ways this can go now, huh?

Nikos

Meaning?

Me

You either fire me or I quit.

Nikos

I won’t be firing you, Lisa.

I sigh, grateful he’s not able to see me right now as tears spill down my cheeks.

Me

You won’t?

Nikos

No.

Me

I’ll quit then. I’m sure you won’t want me stepping on your toes after all that’s happened.

I hold my breath, waiting for his reply.

Nikos

That’s exactly it, you see. I DO want you.

Me

What? I thought you said you wanted out. Why do we have to do this over texts? I want to see you. Can you come over?

Nikos

I can. But I can’t promise things will go as you plan.

Me

I don’t even know what that means.

Nikos

Your shift ends at eleven, right?

Me

Yes.

Nikos

It’s half past nine, now. I’ll catch you before you leave.

Me

I hope so.
