BEEP! BEEP!
My eyes felt like they were glued shut as I tried several times to get them open. That irritating ass beeping sound was giving me a headache and my mouth was sandpaper dry.
"When the fuck is the doctor gone come back in here? It's been damn near an hour and his ass ain't been back yet," I heard Khaizon say. He sounded far away so he must have been either in the hallway or doorway.
"Sir I told you already that your wife is stable for now and the doctor has other patients to tend to," I'm guessing a nurse said.
"I don't give a fuck bout none of that. I need somebody to check her and my seed and make sure they are still ok. Why she ain't woke up yet? I can assure you this is me asking nicely, and I'm not gone repeat myself again," Khaizon said.
"Khi calm down before they put your ass out again like earlier. Let them do their job," Lyric said.
"Fuck that I want her moved to a private wing with her own personal team. Hell I'll buy a hospital wing if I have to. I need to be updated every minute," he said.
Hearing his voice spurred me on to finally open my eyes yet I quickly closed them again because of the blinding light. I tried again to open my eyes and this time they stayed open.
"Khaizon," I said hoarsely. My voice was low and raspy so they damn sure didn't hear me. But the machines begin going off again sounding like fire alarms and this is what alerted Lyric and Khaizon to the fact that I was awake.
"Journi, how you feeling?" Lyric said once she reached me.
Her voice sounded professional as fuck and I didn't need nurse Lyric I just wanted my sister.
But judging by how Khaizon was showing his ass I'm sure she'd had to keep it professional in order to keep the peace.
Before I could tell her exactly this, Khaizon had moved her to the side and grabbed me up in a bear hug.
"You scared the hell out of me girl fuck! I've never before in my fucking life been scared of any damn thing. But arriving to the hospital seeing doctors working on you, and you hooked up to all types of tubes, was enough to bring me to my knees. I ain't like that feeling at all, hopelessness.
I thought about airing this bitch out and killing everybody but that would have only prolonged the process of them helping you. I felt powerless," he whispered in my ear as he just held me.
This baby already had my ass emotional, but hearing his confessions instantly had me tearing up.
Since day one Khaizon's actions have shown me how he felt about me, even if he had a hard time verbally expressing it.
But to hear him basically saying he loved me in so many words did something to my soul.
"Damn Khi let her breathe, give her some space," Lyric said from behind Khaizon.
"She's breathing just fine," he said letting me go but not moving from the side of my bed. Lyric rolled her eyes at his back but didn't say nothing else because she like everybody else knew to pick her battles with him and this wasn't one worth having.
"How you feeling sis?" She asked me.
"Like shit. I need something to drink my throat feels like sandpaper," I said as Lyric moved to the side of my bed grabbing me some water from the pitcher.
Just as she was handing me the cup, my room door opened and an older white man with silver hair and glasses wearing a white coat walked in followed by a nurse who looked almost the same age as the doctor.
I wasn't one to judge but I didn't like the idea of having my health care in the hands of two people who looked like they were born in the stone ages.
They say the older, the more experienced, however I wanted somebody who wasn't seconds away from death; that's all.
"Ms. Banks, I'm Dr. Ellison, I've been overseeing your care," He said walking closer to me with Khaizon acting like he wasn't gone move out of his way. I gently pushed at his arms until he finally stepped aside so that the doctor could do his job.
"I'll be back I have a phone call to make," Khaizon said clenching his jaw before walking out of the room.
As soon as he left you could visibly see the relief leave the doctor's body.
I felt bad that Khaizon had been showing his ass this badly with these folks.
At this point I don't know who was worse him or my father.
"You gave us all quite the scare earlier, how are you feeling now?" Dr. Ellison said.
"Honestly? Like I got hit by a damn bus," I said clearing my throat before taking a sip of the cup Lyric handed me.
"That's to be expected given everything your body had been through in the last few hours," He said pulling a penlight out of his jacket pocket.
"I'm going to check your neurological response. So I need you to look up at the light and follow my finger with your eyes," Dr. Ellison said.
"Neurological? That's my brain? What the hell is wrong with my brain?" I asked feeling myself beginning to panic again.
"Calm down Journi, it's a perfectly routine procedure," Lyric said.
"Your sister is correct, it's very routine and a way for us to gauge your recovery. And to respond to your question about your brain, your brain is fine. However, when your body crashed, combined with the blood loss, there wasn't enough oxygen rich blood flowing to your organs including your brain.
That's why we performed an emergency blood transfusion," Dr. Ellison said.
"How is my baby?" I said reaching down rubbing my still very rounded belly.
I moved my hands all over my stomach pressing down hard in certain areas trying to feel movement from her.
All I heard was blood transfusion and blood loss.
I knew none of that would be good for my baby.
Or had I lost her during surgery? That thought almost had me hyperventilating as I felt my panic rising higher as the machines begin to beep louder as I started to cry.
"Journi, I need you to stay with me. Focus on my voice and try to slow your breathing down." Dr. Ellison said just as my room door was forcibly pushed open.
"What the fuck going on? What you do to her?" Khaizon asked barging back into the room.
"Khi calm down," Lyric said as he ignored her and rushed back over to me grabbing my hand as his eyes roamed over my body as if he was trying to find what was hurting.
"What's wrong ma?" He asked me.
"M-m-y baby," I said crying even harder.
"The baby is fine, calm down for me. Daddy gone kiss it and make it better. You want me to get rid of this nigga? Is he making you cry?" Khaizon casually asked me like we were discussing the weather.
"N-no," I said shaking my head trying to force myself to stop crying.
I knew this crazy ass nigga wasn't just talking when he said he would get rid of the doctor.
He definitely didn't mean sending him away or changing doctors either.
His ass couldn't keep threatening these people like this or they would wind up calling the police on him.
That thought is what finally made me try to calm down a bit.
"Good, that's good just breathe for me. Deep breaths. You are getting worked up again and that's not good for you or your baby. We just got your blood pressure stabilized after the transfusion. Panicking is only gonna make your heart work harder,
and right now we need your body focused on healing and keeping blood flowing to your baby girl who is fine by the way. I'll do another ultrasound shortly so you can see she's ok," Dr. Ellison said in a high pitched tone as his eyes shot to Khaizon.
"My baby is ok?" I asked again just for reassurance.
"Yes the baby is perfectly fine and after I check you over, we'll do another ultrasound and reattach your Fetal Doppler so you can see and hear for yourself," he said.
"Ok," I nodded. He made sure my breathing was under control, before walking over to the cabinets grabbing gloves and putting them on. Then he took a chair and rolled it up to the foot of my bed.
The whole time this interaction was going on, the nurse whom I had momentarily forgotten about was cowering in the corner. Upon seeing the doctor sitting up to check me, she quickly made her way over to the bed.
"Let's get you situated in the proper position so the doctor can check you," the nurse said as her and Lyric helped me into position where the doctor could check me.
No matter how many times it's happened, I still wasn't used to different strangers deep diving in my pussy like they was searching for treasure.
"Check her how?" Khaizon asked once the nurse was finished and had moved back to her previous position.
"Well, I need to check and make sure her bleeding has stopped, and she's fine," he said.
"But I don't understand how did my labor stop? I know for a fact my water broke and I was having contractions," I said as the doctor begin his exam.
"Well, your cervix is still closed and you're not dilated at all. The fluid you felt was the result of a partial placental abruption. Meaning part of the placenta separated from the wall of your uterus," he replied. "The bleeding has stopped so that's a good sign."
"And it caused the contractions I was experiencing? Because they felt real as fuck to me," I said.
"Or was that Braxton Hicks?" I asked as Dr. Ellison moved the blanket up a bit to press down on my stomach.
I immediately yelled out in pain from that small action.
I felt Khaizon getting ready to move so I squeezed his hand tighter to hold him in place.
"No you did not suffer from Braxton Hicks. Those painful contractions you felt is called prodromal labor. Basically, it's a 'false labor.' The blood from the partial placental tearing earlier highly irritated your uterine muscles, causing your uterus to misfire.
Your body was throwing out false alarms because of the tear which was heightened by the traumatic events of the car wreck. It's also why your symptoms presented the way they did. Adrenaline masks pain, it keeps your body upright and functioning when it should be shutting down.
Your system didn't fully register how much blood you'd lost until you had finally calmed down and relaxed. That's why your body crashed when you lost consciousness," Dr. Ellison said.
"Ok did you fix the tearing thing? What if it happens again? Then what?" I asked.
