Epilogue
ROWAN
I take Charlie on a little drive. “I want you to see what I’ve been working on while you’ve been editing videos.”
He’s still at Weston & Ramirez, but only four days a week. The other day he works on construction projects with his brother, outside, creating things with his hands. While Charlie is never going to be an effusive person, he’s happy now. I know it.
I drive him to an industrial warehouse located in an area that’s sleepy on weekends. Charlie helped me find this place, but he hasn’t been here recently.
I use my thumbprint to open the door, and we walk in. I’ve bought a few unmarked vans, and X has got the computing power going. I keep my old car here, though we’ve repainted it and changed the plates and the VIN so it’s not traceable to me. I show Charlie Chet and Fabian’s workout room.
“Things are all coming together,” I say.
“Are you actually going to do anything with your vengeance list?” Charlie asks. “And if so, are you planning to kill them all? Because I might be okay with you being a villain, but I don’t think you should become a serial killer.”
“No, I don’t think I need to have them all leave the face of the planet in order to right some wrongs. Most of them, I think, just need to see some serious consequences for their actions.”
“That makes sense. But it seems to me you’re too softhearted—at least when it comes to the people who didn’t physically hurt you. I mean, even though you found Pierce, you haven’t done anything to him. And I’m sure you could figure out a way to get to him in jail.”
I grin. “That’s because I took him off the list.”
Charlie’s jaw drops open. “What? Why? I thought he’d be right at the top, after what he did to Wilbur.”
“Because he led me to meeting you.”
The look Charlie gives me tells me crossing Pierce off the list was an excellent idea.
“You could still mess with him,” he says. “Like, I bet X could fix things so every time he books a ShareARide, his account gets debited twice—once for the ride and once for charity.”
I grin. “Sounds good.”
“What about other people who hurt you in the past?”
“Don’t you worry. I’ll be coming for them when they least expect it.”
“Well, if you’re ready, I think I might have a client for you,” Charlie says. “An old friend of Sam’s called me, and he could use some help. Revenge for some horrible shit that happened to his boyfriend.”
I nod. “Okay. Set up a meeting.”
On my twenty-fifth birthday, I get a call from the lawyers. “The money is now yours.”
I smile and ask them to send some of it to Weston & Ramirez House. We’re going to help all the LGBTQ+ kids we can, here and everywhere.
And now I’m firmly going to start my revenge business.
