FIONA
I was cruising down Dreidel Drive when I saw Dottie. She was decked out in workout gear and speed walking down the sidewalk. Or walking as fast as Scooter would let her, because he was at her side, tongue lolling.
When I left the house, I slung my purse over my shoulder and was off. I had no idea where I was headed. I just needed out. I definitely didn’t need to have a showdown in a donut shop. I didn’t need any more gossip about me spreading through town.
Pregnant. Dax’s girlfriend. FBI agent. Talented pumpkin painter. Vegetarian. That was plenty and too much at the same time.
The second I saw Dottie, I pulled over instead of blowing right on by .
She saw me, then she smiled and waved, came over to the car. I rolled down the window.
When she saw my face, probably my hair and lack of makeup, she got serious. “What happened?”
“Men.”
She nodded, then opened the back door. “In Scooter.”
The dog hopped into the back seat, came over to sniff my face, then sat down.
Dottie climbed into the passenger seat. “Let’s get some drinks and talk.”
“It’s nine in the morning.”
“Mimosas. It’s got orange juice in it.”
She had me there.
