transition
a rhythmic or melodic interlude between sections of a song
Life is a series of crossroads. Most of them we don’t even notice and have no quantifiable effect on our lives. What we eat for a meal. What clothes we wear on any given day. If we answer a call from an unknown number or not.
Other crossroads are more obvious—they’re the big life decisions. We fret over all the possible repercussions or rewards that await us depending on which direction we take.
But whether a crossroads is obvious or not, it still matters. Little ones can become life-altering. Decisions that seem momentous in the moment can shrink in importance as time passes and our perspective shifts.
Our choices, big and small, define us. Shape us and heal us.
They break us, too.
In the brief month Wilder and I were together, I faced hundreds of crossroads. Most of them only obvious in hindsight.
When I said yes to us that first night. When I swore to never regret him. When I promised to love him forever. Each kiss. Touch. Smile. The choice to trust and hope.
Every time I believed his lies… and the lies I spoke believing they were truth.
I once thought falling in love with Wilder would destroy me. I was right and also wrong. In a strange way, I’m grateful for what happened.
By embracing darkness, I lost my fear of it. I’m finally safe.
Nothing can touch me now.

Lyrics of “End Times” by Theory
Album: Fatalism
Bells were ringing at the end of time
The sky was on fire but you were mine
Ashes on our tongues, in our lungs
But you were mine
This story’s ending already told
Stamped, sealed, sold
Beautiful by design
You were mine
Mine at the end of time
Close your eyes now, baby
and remember the color of mine
the first and last time
you told me you loved me
Beautiful by design
(Beautiful by design)
You were mine at the end of time
