BELL

Knell calls the office Wednesday afternoon while Flint is replacing the contact alarm battery behind Room Sixteen.

“You should've listened,” he says when I answer.

“The property is still occupied.”

“Your construction boys are here through Friday. The old couple's still in Seven. You've been moving weekend reservations.”

The precision tells me he has watched from the operations building or parked along County Nine. I look through the office window. Flint is out of sight behind the western wing, but the radio clipped inside my front pocket connects me to him.

“Most motel owners track arrivals and departures,” I say. “You could've saved yourself the surveillance.”

“Saturday at ten. Leave the main gate open and every room dark. Be gone by eight.”

I take a pen from the desk and write the time on my palm. “How long?”

“Two hours.”

“You said one truck.”

“Two buyers. They leave through the strip. You stay away until I call.”

He believes the first threat worked. My changed reservations and empty western rooms look like surrender from wherever he's watching.

“What happens if somebody comes off the highway looking for a vacancy?”

“The sign will be off.”

“It's already broken.”

“Then you won't miss it.”

The line disconnects.

I press the radio. “Flint, office.”

He comes through the door less than a minute later. His eyes check my face, the phone and the empty parking lot.

“Knell,” I say. “Saturday at ten. Two buyers. He wants me out by eight, main gate open and every room dark. They plan to leave through the airstrip.”

“Blocked number?”

“Yes.”

“Anything in the background?”

“An idling diesel engine and a metal impact. He was probably near a work yard.”

Flint presses the radio button. “Switch, final time confirmed. Ten Saturday. Two buyers, exit toward the strip.”

Switch acknowledges, and the club shifts into positions we've been discussing for three days without any dramatic scramble.

“He thinks you're afraid,” Flint says after the radio quiets.

“I'm afraid.”

“He thinks it made you obedient.”

There's the difference.

I tape a handwritten notice to the office door stating that Sundown Court will close for electrical work Friday evening. Then I walk the property with Flint and decide what the false closure will look like.

We'll move the Hensleys and both work crews through the rear lane at four Friday afternoon.

Their vehicles will remain in the lot until six, when Dare and Rev drive them to Red Mesa Recovery.

Timers will switch room lights on and off through nine.

At eight, I'll close my apartment blinds, kill the last visible light and move through the laundry passage to the linen room.

The plan depends on Knell believing the motel is mine to empty.

That part is easy, because it is.

“We could put Vandal in Twelve,” Flint says as we stand beneath the shade canopy. “He'd have a clean line toward the gate.”

“No. Buyers might check rooms. Put him in the drainage culvert outside the east wall.”

“He'll hate it.”

“He can bitch after.”

Flint's mouth twitches. “I like this side of you.”

“The side that puts your sergeant-at-arms in a concrete ditch?”

“Especially that side.”

We mark the culvert on the motel map, then walk the buyer routes backward.

A vehicle entering from the highway has to slow beneath the arch and commit to the courtyard before seeing the steel main gate.

A vehicle leaving toward the strip has to pass the ice alcove, cross the service lane and wait for the motorized shutter.

I can close either path from the linen room.

“Knell knows the manual release,” Flint says.

“He knew the old one. I replaced the gear assembly last summer.”

“Can he force it?”

“With a wrench and three minutes. Less if he has the crank handle.”

“Where is it?”

“Locked in the utility panel. I keep the key.”

“He may bring an old copy.”

I add a second lock to the list. Flint doesn't waste time arguing about whether I should be near the gate. We make the weak point harder to reach and put Dare where he can see anyone approaching it.

At Room Sixteen, I show him how the service-door mirror reflects the western lane. I can watch the manual release without exposing myself beyond the frame. Flint lowers his head to my height and checks the angle.

“Useful,” he says.

“You sound surprised again.”

“Impressed.”

“Better.”

We continue into the office, where the closure notice remains taped to the glass.

A guest from Room Ten enters carrying a hard hat and asks whether the electrical work means he needs to empty the room early Friday.

I give him the evacuation time, confirm the replacement lodging and refuse his offer to stay as extra help.

“This isn't your problem,” I say.

“You gave us a good weekly rate.”

“And I'll give it again when you return Sunday. Pack by three. Latch picks everyone up through the rear lane.”

The man accepts because the plan is specific. After he leaves, I add his insulin cooler to the transport list and call the roadhouse to confirm a refrigerator in his temporary room.

“You remember every guest's medicine?” Flint asks.

“I remember anything that becomes dangerous when moved carelessly.”

He looks at me for a second too long.

“What?”

“You're damn good at this.”

“At relocating insulin?”

“At making sure everybody knows what to do without scaring the shit out of them.”

I look down at the legal pad. “Fear is mine to manage. Safety belongs to everyone.”

“Ash used to say something close to that.”

“He learned it from me.”

Flint smiles. “I believe you.”

The Hensleys come to the office next. Mrs. Hensley wants a written promise that Room Seven will be available Sunday and insists on knowing whether the replacement room has a chair that supports her husband's back.

I make both arrangements. Flint carries their spare luggage to the service-lane staging area while Mr. Hensley tells him something that makes Flint glance toward me.

When he comes back, I catch him outside the office. “What did he say?”

“That your chairs are inadequate.”

“Liar.”

“Selective privacy.”

“Still a polished phrase.”

His grin gives him away.

“What did he actually say?”

“That you slept beside a pump for two nights during the flood because you wouldn't leave the place.”

I shrug. “The pump kept failing.”

“He asked whether I know you won't leave when a place needs you.”

“And?”

“I told him I'm learning.”

I like hearing that more than I should. Flint has been here three days, and he hasn't overruled one decision. He disagrees, explains and listens without making a fucking speech about it.

At five, the plumbing in Room Four backs up.

I spend an hour clearing the trap while Flint holds the bucket and receives a detailed lecture from Mrs. Hensley about the town council.

Afterward, we wash our hands at the maintenance sink and share the tired laughter that follows an unglamorous disaster.

“This is how you planned to seduce me?” I ask.

“I thought the drain snake added mystery.”

“It added hair.”

“Romance is alive at Sundown Court.”

His smile makes my chest ache. We had humor before sex in the old days.

I remember riding behind him to a desert lake with Ash and the others, my cheek against Flint's back while he made up terrible stories about roadside landmarks.

He knew how to make me laugh before he learned how to make me come.

I set the soap down. “Come to my apartment.”

The warmth in his expression deepens. “For dinner?”

“Later.”

He follows me through the office. I lock the outside door, close the blinds and lead him into my bedroom. Flint stops beside the bed while I remove his cut and place it across the chair. He watches the care I take with it.

“Tell me what you want,” he says.

“Your trust.”

“You have it.”

“Then take off your clothes and lie down.”

He strips without making a show of it. His body has changed over the years.

More muscle crosses his shoulders, and a narrow scar runs along his left side.

I don't ask about it tonight. His cock is already hard, and satisfaction moves through me when he sees the soft leather cuffs attached to my headboard.

“You bought those for me?”

“I bought them years ago for whoever earned them.”

“Honest answer.”

“Are you comfortable being restrained?”

“By you, yeah. If I say red, you let me out.”

“Immediately.”

Flint lies back. I secure each wrist and test the cuffs with two fingers beneath the leather. He could probably pull the headboard apart if he chose. The point is that he doesn't.

I stand at the foot of the bed and remove my clothes while he watches. His erection lifts against his stomach. I want his full attention, and I've got every bit of it.

“You look fucking incredible,” he says.

“You can touch when I decide.”

“Yes, ma'am.”

I climb over his thighs and drag my nails lightly along his chest. Flint's abdominal muscles tighten. I kiss his neck, then his collarbone, moving slowly because he can't bring me where he wants. His breathing deepens when my breasts brush his chest.

“Color?” I ask.

“Green.”

I continue down his body. His cock is hot and heavy in my hand. A bead of moisture shines at the tip, and I spread it with my thumb before lowering my mouth over him. Flint's head presses into the pillow. The cuffs pull once, leather creaking, then go quiet.

I take him deeper, using my hand around the base while my tongue works along the underside. Watching him fight the urge to take control makes me wetter.

“Beth, if you keep doing that, I'm going to come.”

“You can.”

“I want inside you.”

“Then wait.”

He lets out a hard breath. “Green.”

I release him and retrieve a condom from the nightstand. After rolling it onto him, I straddle his hips and hold his cock upright. I rub the broad head through my wetness until Flint's eyes narrow with effort.

“Ask me,” I say.

“Ride me.”

“That's not a question.”

His mouth curves. “Will you ride me?”

“Yes.”

I lower myself over him. The stretch is delicious, under my control from the first inch to the last. Flint watches where our bodies meet, then looks up at me. I plant my hands on his chest and begin to move.

I roll my hips until his cock hits the spot that makes my thighs tremble. He flexes his hands in the cuffs but stays where I put him while I take exactly what I want.

“You have no idea how many times I pictured you,” he says.

“Tell me.”

“In my bed. On my bike. At the clubhouse after everybody left.” His eyes stay on mine. “Never twenty-five. I wanted you. Older. Pissed at me. Still you.”

That turns me on more than any polished speech could. I increase my pace. Flint lifts his hips to meet me only after I nod, and the added force drives a cry from my throat.

I reach between my legs and circle my clit. He watches, helpless because he agreed to be, and the look on his face pushes me closer.

“Come with me,” I say.

“With you.”

Pleasure rolls through me in deep waves. I tighten around Flint, and his body drives upward once before he comes with my name broken across a curse.

I stay over him until my legs steady. Then I climb off, dispose of the condom and release the cuffs. Red impressions mark his wrists without broken skin. I rub them gently.

“All good?” I ask.

“More than good.”

He sits and draws me onto his lap. I go because I want the closeness too.

“You stayed,” I say.

“I'll keep staying.”

“Tonight isn't a test you pass once.”

“I know.”

Flint kisses my shoulder. His arms rest loosely around my waist.

I lean back against him. “You can sleep here.”

He doesn't gloat. “Thank you.”

“Tomorrow you return to Fifteen. Mrs. Hensley watches the courtyard.”

“That woman knows more about Dry River than Switch.”

“She knows you're in my apartment now.”

“Then the vice president is already compromised.”

I laugh against his chest. Outside, the faulty vacancy sign flickers once and dies again. Saturday is coming, and Knell has finally given us the shape of his attack.

Tonight is ours.
