Chapter 27
E LLIE
I can hardly believe auction day is already here. So many people have come out to attend the auction and breakfast. We are truly blessed to have all these folks who love and care for us, both Amish and Englisch .
Mamm and Dat were just as stunned as I was when I brought home the check from Trinkets and Treasures. They were grateful to be able to pay more toward the hospital bill. But all in all, it barely made a dent in the astronomical balance.
Henry and I have been busy sewing, and we delivered our next batch of handicrafts to Missy at Trinkets and Treasures. For sure and certain, I never imagined Henry and me sewing side by side, but there we were. Elijah laughed every time he passed by, but Henry was a good sport.
True to his word, Henry really does seem like he’ll do anything for me. A girl can’t help but fall in love with a guy like that. Which has me thinking about a future with me and Henry in it. My thoughts have become so ferhoodled I’ve even tried to imagine what our bopplin will look like.
I don’t know what has gotten into me. It’s like I’m inside out and upside down a thousand times over.
“Hey, Ellie, look! Isn’t that one of the aprons you made?” Mamm pointed out the next item up for auction.
“ Ach , jah . That’s one of the aprons I sold at Trinkets and Treasures. Whatever is it doing here?”
The auctioneer starts out at a really low price, then I hear a familiar voice holler, “Twenty dollars!”
When I pivot, sure enough, Henry is standing tall holding up his number. Ach , he must’ve known it was mine. I smile and shake my head.
“See?” Mamm sighs. “Henry is the one. Probably bid on that for you.”
My cheeks warm, when Henry turns and grins at me.
Our gazes catch and I’m in a trance until I realize the next item up for auction is one of my aprons too. Again, Henry bids twenty dollars, then is outbid. He bids again, then another person bids and wins.
“That one sold for thirty-five dollars!” I can hardly believe it. Although Henry didn’t win the bid, he made the final price go up. Had that been his intention? The rascal. Although, I’m sure and certain Henry would have paid thirty dollars.
“I do believe you have captured that boy’s heart.” Mamm pats my hand.
After that, many more of my handsewn items come up for auction. It seems like the person who purchased them at Trinkets and Treasures just donated them all to be auctioned off. I shake my head in amazement. God is so good.
Surely, this auction and the breakfast have raised a great deal of money. Hopefully, it will be enough so Mamm and Dat won’t have to sell the farm.
