CHAPTER THIRTY

We drove in three different trucks. Aaron took the first group of agents, Ben took the second one, and Mia drove me, Danny, and Shane in the third one. Since Danny and I were working on sub-legal activities, we decided to go alone and leave the agents for the first two trucks.

To say Aaron wasn’t happy about Mia’s request to me was an understatement. If I could remember correctly, his exact words were, “When will you stop trying to ruin my life?” To which she answered, “When you tell me what happened between you and your doc friend.”

So, he thought it best to let it go and complied.

Danny and I were in the back seat and worked non-stop on our laptops—that Mia had brought them with us just proved she was more of a Spitfire than I anticipated. We were able to cut all the communication surrounding the building we were about to burst into. We also turned off their cameras and the ones around the area, and disconnected all phones, social media, and any sort of communication regarding the agents accompanying us.

Mia mumbled something at the front, and I heard Shane’s voice.

“Is everything okay?”

“Yes, I’m just going over the blueprint in my head again.”

Danny kept typing by my side. “Why are you anxious about it? You’ve studied all their properties more than anyone else.”

“This is a new one. I don’t even think it’s theirs.”

I glanced up at her profile. “What do you mean? Doesn’t the building belong to the Alacráns ?”

She tightened her hand around the steering wheel. “I don’t think so. We had no documentation on it, I found nothing about it in our files. The property is linked to a cascade of shell companies. I went back as far as I could, and all I found was the name of a woman who might as well not exist. Or she’s not using that name anymore. I got nothing on her.”

Shane peered at her. “I could help take a look at it once we get back.”

“I appreciate that.”

“By the way…thank you for inviting me along and for trusting me on this. It’ll be good to have some action again. I promise I won’t let you down.”

“I know you won’t. And if you do, I’ll gladly hand your butt back to your grandfather and let him decide your punishment.”

Shane threw his head back in laughter, and I couldn’t keep myself from smiling at it. It was good to work alongside him again. It was wonderful to be around Pop and my brother after so long of us staying apart. It was even better to see them getting along with the woman who was changing my life.

Danny and I were finally able to complete our assignment. We closed our laptops, and I placed them in the hidden vault under the passenger seat.

I rubbed my palms on my legs and rolled my neck. “We’ve done it.”

Mia glanced at me in the rearview mirror and grinned. “I knew you could. And great timing because we’re almost there.”

Danny straightened up next to me. “Let’s recap. The security is already turned off. I’ll meet Ben, and we’ll guide the team under his leadership to stop the Alacráns on site. ”

Mia nodded. “I didn’t want to risk scaring the girls with a big team of burly men, and I thought having a woman approach them would be safer. So, Shane and I will search for the victims and get them out. Your teams need to keep them as far away from us as possible.”

I tipped my chin in acknowledgment. “Aaron and I will lead his team toward Keyes. We’ll keep him from running and away from you and Shane.”

We arrived at the destination and climbed out of the truck to meet the others. Anticipation coursed through me, and by the look on everyone else, they felt it too.

Mia adjusted her vest and checked her weapons. “Send the eagle, Danny.”

He pulled the drone attached to his tactical gear and guided it toward the property. We waited for him to reckon the place then approached the building when he gave the all-clear.

All the teams advanced in silence and took the assigned positions. Just like I remembered him doing when we worked together, Danny started praying by my side.

Even though she didn’t accompany him, Mia closed her eyes and waited for him to finish, before looking at us with fire shining in her eyes. “Tomorrow, we rest.”

The guys and I repeated after her, and inside we went.
