Chapter 13
The buzzing on his wrist woke him. Hendrix shifted in the bed, sighing with contentment when Emily snuggled closer to him for warmth. All he wanted to do was kiss every inch of her skin in a sensual, wake up process so that they could lose themselves in each other all over again. But he’d already woken her three times over the past several hours. Hendrix glanced at his watch, startled to realize that they’d been in bed for twelve hours. It was now four o’clock in the morning and…?
He blinked, trying to read the tiny words on his watch. He stifled a curse when he realized that someone had broken into the club. Not just tried to break in, but they were actually inside the clubhouse!
Gazing down at Emily, he seriously considered ignoring the message. There were two other guards already on their way to the club. They could handle it. But something, a niggling thought in the back of his mind, warned him that this might be important. Hendrix thought about the letters that Emily had been getting recently. The letters she wouldn’t show him.
He was trying to respect her privacy, but Hendrix couldn’t help but be aware of how much those letters bothered her.
It also irritated him that she wouldn’t rely on him to help her figure out who was sending them to her. But now that they were together, he could slowly coax her to tell him what was going on.
Still, the letters were an issue for another day. Right now, he needed to find out who the hell had broken into the club and, more importantly, why.
Carefully, he climbed out of bed and found his clothes. Dressing in her family room, he thought about writing a note to Emily, explaining why he was gone. But he hoped to be back before she even woke up. It was probably just a bunch of kids breaking in, not realizing what the building was for.
Then he stopped that thought. It wouldn’t be kids. The building was out in the middle of nowhere. It wasn’t on a busy street. In fact, one had to know where to turn in order to get to the place. There were rolling pastures around the place, but the main building was hidden by trees from every road. So unless one knew what was down the long driveway, one wouldn’t just stumble upon the place.
So, who the hell had broken in?
Only one way to find out, he told himself. But before he left Emily’s house, he paused in the doorway to her bedroom, watching her sleep. She’d reached out, her hand resting on the place where he’d lain just moments ago.
With any luck, he’d be right back in that place in less than an hour. Emily lived only about ten minutes from the club. So, he’d probably beat the police as well as the other guys on his team.
