Chapter 6

CHAPTER SIX

I can’t seem to get my mouth to work. It’s full of some kind of tangled mess of emotion. And my stomach is trying to come out through all of it.

The Agile Security and Rescue team member, the big blond brute that I’m now MARRIED to, says, “Sit down. You’re looking too peaked.”

I reach for the seat. “You think?”

A booming voice on a megaphone somehow pierces through the shell of the jet. “Open the door now, prepare to be boarded.”

I gasp and grab my head. “Oh my god!”

Wolf looks nothing like I feel. He might be stunned, but he’s fully in control of his blood pressure and heart rate, apparently. And can still speak in sentences. “I’ll take care of this.”

“Wait!”

He turns back to me. “What?”

“What’s your full name?”

He smiles, a dangerous, feral kind of smile that sets my pulse off at a gallop. “Wolf Black.”

I clutch my heart. “Dear lord. I married a man named Wolf Black, that I don’t even know.”

Cole unlatches the door as Wolf studies me for a long second.

“Sit tight, wife.” He turns to Nan. “Give me the document.”

She passes the crumpled, signed paper over with a satisfied gleam in her dark gray eyes.

When he’s out of earshot, I hiss. “You didn’t just marry me to some man I don’t know!”

“I did. And be glad. He looks like a fine husband.”

“I don’t care what he looks like! I’m not marrying him.”

She leans back in her seat, fluffs her hibiscus print beach cover-up around her. “You just did. And my dear, you’ll thank me one day.”

“Nan!”

A string of police officers pile into the cabin of the jet. The first officer glances at the others. He’s as uncomfortable around the collar as a man can get for a damned good reason. “I need to verify your signature.”

He holds out a blank notepad and pen to me. I snatch the thing and sign my name with furious slashes. Exactly the same way I signed the marriage license.

With a deep scowl, the man compares the two, twisting them this way and that. Then he looks at me down the slender line of his nose. “And you’re leaving the island under your own will, and this man is now your husband?”

I raise my chin as my heart hammers my insides to death. “Yes. And yes.”

A cop behind him mutters something. The leader holds up a hand. “It’s all legal. The marriage document is signed. Her father is going to be very upset. But there’s nothing he can do. This man, Mr. Black, calls the shots.”

Wolf, who’s been standing behind the man, taps the lead officer on the shoulder. With a frightening expression, he says, “You should get off my plane now, before I boot you out the door for harassing my wife.”

The cop glances up and down Wolf. His expression tightens. I can practically hear red flags whipping in the wind in his head.

Guess he decided the Wolf isn’t joking. I know I would be running screaming if I had someone look at me the way Wolf is pinning him with a death glare.

Nervously, he motions for the other officers to go. When he reaches the door, he turns a pathetic glare on Wolf. “I know this is some kind of farce. I’ll get to the bottom of it. And as far as I’m concerned, you’re not welcome on this island again.”

Wolf’s lip snarls as he steps toward the man. He seems to grow even bigger. “Keep your bloody island for your fucking self. I got what I came after.”

The cop literally flinches. He backs away from Wolf without taking his eyes away, then scurries down the steps.
