Chapter 24
CHAPTER TWENTY-FOUR
This flight can’t be over soon enough. My eyes are closed when I hear a muttered curse next to me. Kate’s nails are in her teeth when I turn to her. She’s clicking on her laptop trackpad, her face growing tight.
“What’s wrong?”
“I just got an email that the hotel canceled my reservation.”
“Did they say why?”
“No.”
“Just book something else.”
“I tried. But my credit card is being declined. I tried my debit card too. Same thing.”
“Did your father cut off your accounts?”
“That would be despicable. But that slime ball, Wilton, might have done it.”
“What about your grandmother’s?”
She gives me a flat look. “How many 80-year-olds that you know have a credit card?”
I shrug.
“She thinks they are pure evil. She operates in cash.”
“She must not have much with her, that purse is really small.”
She shakes her head. “She transferred a lot into the account we share so I can deposit into a bank in the U.S.”
“I’m sure it’s just a glitch.”
Snapping her laptop closed, Kate says, “A glitch that’s going to leave us on the street.”
I slip my wallet from my pocket. “Use mine.”
She stares at the thing like it’s a snake. “I couldn’t.”
I lean into her ear. “You can sleep with me, but won’t borrow some money from me?”
Her quick intake of breath tells me she’s just as bothered by the proximity as I am.
She reaches for my wallet, but I pull it back. “Only one catch. You have to book near Eden, Utah.”
Frowning, she says, “Why? What’s in Eden?”
“Me.”
For a long minute, she just holds my gaze. “Is that smart?”
“Since when have we demonstrated our smarts about this thing between us?”
She plucks my wallet. “You do have a point.”
Flipping her laptop open, she gets to work on booking a hotel. When she enters the credit card information, she says, “Weird. It’s not working either.”
She passes me the laptop and I check the numbers. “The digits are correct. Try again.”
After a minute, she huffs. “Okay, this is not working either.”
“What the hell?”
Taking her laptop, I enter the information again. “Son of a bitch. Try my debit.”
After a minute, she says. “Uh, Wolf. I think something’s wrong.”
That fucker. “I’m going back to Isla Rosa as soon as I get you somewhere secure.”
