Chapter 42
"Do you want me to stop, Miss Herrera?"
The question hung between them like humidity—low, steady, and unmistakably charged. It wasn't exactly a dare, but it wasn't innocent either. Parang babala, pero may halong tanong na hindi lang basta curiosity. May hinahanap si Kairi—something unsaid, something more.
Miss Herrera didn't answer right away. Her gaze lingered—long enough to mean something. And when she finally spoke, her voice was even, deliberate.
"I don't think that's what you're asking."
Kairi leaned in just a little, knees brushing against Miss Herrera's. "No?"
Miss Herrera didn't pull back. She stayed still, pero halatang may tension sa katawan niya—tighter now, like she was holding something back.
"You're not asking for permission," she said, quieter this time. "You're waiting to see if I'll stop you."
Mas lalo pang lumalim ang tension. Kairi's breath hitched, but she didn't move back. Hindi siya umatras. Tumitig lang siya.
"Would you?"
Miss Herrera raised a brow. "Would I what?"
"Stop me."
A muscle in Miss Herrera's jaw shifted. Her voice stayed steady, but softer. "You're testing me."
Kairi's grin was smaller now, but sharper. "You don't seem like you hate it."
Miss Herrera's voice dropped. "I don't like it."
"Liar," Kairi whispered, eyes locked on her teacher.
That did something. Miss Herrera's eyes flicked down—just briefly—to Kairi's lips, before meeting her gaze again.
"You think I'm just going to let you push me?"
Kairi pressed in a little closer. "You already are."
Tahimik na ibinaba ni Miss Herrera ang baso sa table, slow and careful, like she didn't want to break the moment. Then she turned toward her fully, her knee pressing into Kairi's leg.
"That mouth of yours," she murmured. "It's going to get you in real trouble one day."
Kairi didn't flinch. "Maybe I want trouble."
Miss Herrera leaned in. Her weight shifted toward Kairi, and her hand rested along the back of the sofa—close enough para maramdaman ni Kairi ang init kahit hindi sila magkadikit. Her knee pressed in more firmly now, deliberate.
"You don't know what you want," she said, tighter now, like she was trying to convince both of them.
Kairi inhaled slowly. Her voice came softer, but certain. "I want this."
And before either of them could break the moment—before reason could crawl its way back—Kairi leaned in and kissed Miss Herrera.
It wasn't rushed. Hindi biglaan. She took her time, lips brushing first, soft and tentative. Deliberate. Testing the weight of what they both already knew.
Miss Herrera didn't pull away.
Instead, she leaned in—finally, fully. Her lips parted against Kairi's, kissing her back—slower, deeper, firmer.
Walang hesitation. Walang pag-atras. Just steady warmth and pressure.
Her hand moved, mula sa sofa, hanggang sa balikat ni Kairi.
She let it rest there, fingers curling slightly, grounding them both in the moment.
And for a second, neither of them moved beyond that. Just the kiss. Just the closeness. Just this one, impossible, inevitable thing.
Kairi stayed close, almost too close now, her hands lightly gripping the fabric of Miss Herrera's shirt at her waist. She inhaled, letting the scent of Miss Herrera in—wine, soft perfume, and something warmer beneath it.
Her knees brushed against Miss Herrera's again, and she tilted her head, chasing every slow movement of her teacher's lips.
Miss Herrera shifted. Gumapang ang kamay niya papunta sa batok ni Kairi, gently angling her head to deepen the kiss.
Her lips parted more, her tongue tracing along Kairi's bottom lip before slipping past—smooth, warm, confident.
May kaunting lasa ng wine sa halik niya, slow but sure, the kind of kiss that made Kairi feel like she was being pulled in and undone all at once.
Kairi gasped softly against her mouth, hands tightening around the edge of her shirt. Her chest pressed forward, closing the distance between them completely—knee to hip, shoulder to shoulder. Napapikit siya, the heat of their bodies sinking deeper into her skin.
Miss Herrera's hand dropped lower, tracing a slow line along Kairi's side. Dahan-dahan niyang hinila pataas ang laylayan ng shirt ni Kairi, and when her palm slipped underneath—bare skin meeting bare skin—Kairi let out a sound, half breath, half whimper.
"Mmnh..."
Pero hindi umatras si Kairi. Instead, she leaned in more, her fingers still tangled in Miss Herrera's shirt, body seeking more contact.
Miss Herrera kissed her deeper now, her tongue stroking slow, deliberate.
Parang matagal na niyang inipon ang ganitong halik, and now she was letting it unfold with quiet control.
Her hand under Kairi's shirt slid upward, tracing the curve of her waist, then around her back, resting just beneath her ribs—steady, grounding.
"Still think you can handle this?" Miss Herrera whispered against her lips, voice heavier, slightly breathless.
Kairi let out a soft laugh, part breath, part moan.
"Ye—yes," she breathed out shakily, her forehead briefly pressing to Miss Herrera's before their mouths found each other again.
Miss Herrera's smile was faint, almost hidden between kisses, but her mouth softened against Kairi's.
She kissed slower now, deliberate. Her hand stayed under Kairi's shirt, fingers warm and steady against her skin, gliding gently along her ribs then back down again—drawing Kairi in but not dragging her under.
Kairi shivered, not from the cold, but from the weight of it all—the heat, the contact, the way Miss Herrera's mouth found her jawline next. A soft kiss there. Then another just below her ear, tongue flicking lightly against the sensitive skin.
"Miss..." bulong ni Kairi, barely audible.
But Miss Herrera didn't answer—she just kissed her again, pulling her back in with a kiss deeper and more consuming. Controlled, yes—but full of heat, too hot for Kairi to stay still.
Kairi's chest rose faster. Naging mababaw ang paghinga. Hands still clutching Miss Herrera's shirt, she pressed closer, every soft pass of tongue, every glide of a palm across her skin sending her higher.
Pero—unti-unti, Kairi's breathing started to hitch more. Gasps came quicker, too sharp. Parang hindi na siya makahabol.
Napansin agad iyon ni Miss Herrera.
She pulled back just enough, her palm still resting warmly under Kairi's shirt, the other hand steady on her shoulder.
"Breathe," Miss Herrera said, voice low but calm. Controlled.
Kairi's head dipped forward, forehead brushing against Miss Herrera's collarbone. "I—I am—"
She tried to catch her breath, but it came out sharp, shaky.
Miss Herrera shook her head gently, her thumb drawing slow, grounding circles on the bare skin of Kairi's waist. "Not enough. Try again."
Kairi closed her eyes tight, forcing herself to inhale deeper, pero ramdam pa rin niya ang slight panic sa dibdib niya. Hindi niya maintindihan kung saan ito nanggaling—was it the heat? The pressure? Or just how real everything felt?
Miss Herrera didn't pull away.
"You don't have to prove anything," she whispered, her lips grazing lightly along Kairi's temple now. The heat of her words felt grounding, but gentle.
"I wasn't— I just—" Kairi tried, but the words fumbled out of her na halos pabulong na. She hated the way her voice broke.
"I know," Miss Herrera said, voice softening more.
She eased her hand out from under Kairi's shirt, then slowly traced a path up her back—reassuring, not pulling away, just adjusting.
Her fingers briefly combed through Kairi's hair, gently tucking a loose strand behind her ear before settling her palm at the nape of her neck.
That simple touch—soft, steady—made Kairi exhale. Finally. Mas malalim, mas buo. Hindi pa rin siya fully okay, pero at least, humupa na iyong tightness sa dibdib niya.
Kairi leaned in. This time with less urgency, and let her forehead fall against Miss Herrera's shoulder. Her arms dropped, hands resting lightly in her lap, muscles slowly relaxing.
Miss Herrera's arms moved around Kairi, enveloping her in a quiet, steady hold. Her palm began slow, even strokes along Kairi's upper back—comforting, quieting something inside her.
"Good," she whispered, her chin resting gently on Kairi's head. "That's better."
Tahimik lang si Kairi. Eyes closed now, listening to the rhythm of Miss Herrera's breathing—calm, grounded. Ramdam niya iyong bigat ng mundo sa balikat niya, pero for now, at least, someone else was carrying part of it.
After a quiet moment, Miss Herrera pressed a soft kiss to the side of Kairi's head. Her lips lingered there as she whispered, "You don't have to rush to prove anything. You already have my attention."
Kairi's chest tightened, in a quieter, steadier way this time. She nodded faintly, her forehead still resting against Miss Herrera's shoulder, heart beginning to settle.
"Okay..." she murmured, barely above a whisper.
And Miss Herrera didn't move. Didn't let go. She just stayed there—arms around Kairi, holding her close without pressing, without asking more than Kairi could give.
Wala na ulit nagsalita. There was no need for it. They just sat there in silence—warm and close, the fire between them still alive, still burning low under the surface.
Pero for now, that heat didn't have to turn into flame.
Hindi pa kailangang tumuloy agad. Hindi kailangang sagarin. For tonight, this—this quiet, steady warmth—was enough.
And Kairi stayed right where she was, letting herself be held. Letting herself breathe.
Letting herself be seen.
