Chapter 48
Maaga pa. Too early for the hallways to be buzzing.
The building felt half-asleep, tahimik pa ang paligid except for the faint stirrings of students just starting to arrive.
Kairi walked down the corridor, bag slung on her shoulder.
Her steps were unhurried. May ngiti sa labi niya na pilit niyang tinatago, though the corners kept threatening to give her away.
Pero underneath the nerves, there was something else humming under her skin. Excitement. Anticipation. The thought of seeing Miss Herrera again made her chest feel lighter and restless in a way she couldn't shake.
Pagbukas niya ng classroom door, she expected for it to be empty. But instead, there she was.
Miss Herrera sat at her desk, leaning slightly over her phone. Her brows furrowed in concentration. Hindi madalas makita ni Kairi si Miss Herrera in moments like this—absorbed in something ordinary. So human.
"Wow," Kairi teased as she stepped in. "Miss, on your phone? Busy ka ba or just chilling bago mo kami pahirapan today?"
Miss Herrera's head lifted, surprise flickering for a split second before composure slid neatly back into place. Her lips curved faintly, like she'd caught herself before smiling too much. "And here I thought you'd be too nervous to joke this morning."
Kairi grinned, dropping her bag onto her seat. "Maybe I'm just distracting myself. Or maybe sinusubukan kitang i-distract."
"That won't work," Miss Herrera replied evenly, though her tone carried the faintest tease. "Especially not today."
Kairi wandered closer, elbows resting lightly against the edge of Miss Herrera's desk. She leaned just enough to face her directly. The silence between them felt charged, like even the ordinary air inside the room carried weight.
"Good morning, Miss," she said at last, softer than her usual.
Miss Herrera's eyes narrowed slightly, studying her student—face, posture, even the curve of her grin—like she was weighing every detail. "You really don't seem nervous."
Kairi shrugged, lips pulling into a smaller smile. "I was. Then I wasn't. Pero not until I saw those."
She tilted her chin toward the neat stack of test papers sitting on the desk.
In one swift motion, Miss Herrera slid her hand over the pile and pulled it closer. "Stop it, Ferrer."
"Relax, Miss. I didn't see anything. Kahit subukan ko pa, wala akong makikita."
"Good," Miss Herrera murmured, though the way she cradled the papers closer to herself sent a warmth through Kairi's chest. Something about it—protective, almost playful in its own guarded way—made her want to push further.
Pero bago pa siya makaisip ng susunod na banat, a voice cut through the doorway.
"Well, well, look who's already bonding before the massacre."
Both of them turned their heads at once. Zoe stood there with a wide grin plastered on her face. Tiningnan niya ang dalawa with unmistakable mischief.
Kairi groaned, rolling her eyes. "You're early, too."
"Yeah, but not early enough to catch...this." Zoe waggled her brows dramatically, clearly savoring the moment.
"Go to your seat, Zoe. You'll need every minute to review."
Zoe only snorted, still smirking habang naglalakad papunta sa upuan niya sa likod. "Yes, Miss Herrera."
Miss Herrera's gaze lingered on her for a beat longer bago muling bumalik kay Kairi. Then, with composed precision, she stacked the papers neatly again. "You too, Kairi. Sit down. Both of you will need it."
The near-threat in her tone only made Kairi smile.
Exams always turned the entire building into something else.
The scrape of chairs, the shuffle of reviewers na binubuksan for one last glance—lahat iyon nagsama-sama to thicken the air.
Even Zoe, na kanina lang ay nakangisi pa mula sa pang-aasar niya, eventually bent over her notes, pen tapping against the page.
Kairi sat at her desk with her notebook open in front of her kahit halos hindi na niya binabasa.
She had been ready—or at least, iyon ang akala niya.
Pero kahit gaano pa siya ka-ready, readiness never canceled out nerves.
And now, with Miss Herrera standing just a few steps away—arranging the test papers with her usual neat precision—Kairi's pulse refused to slow down.
She pressed her palms together on top of her desk, forcing her foot to stop its restless tapping.
Finally, Miss Herrera straightened at the front. Her voice carried evenly across the room—calm and authoritative in the way only she could make it sound.
"You'll have one hour," she said, placing the stack of test papers neatly in order. "This exam has four parts: multiple choice, identification, true or false, and finally, the essay. Answer clearly. Manage your time well."
Nandoon pa rin iyong kaba—sharp, insistent—but mixed with it was the echo of Miss Herrera's look earlier, that faint teasing smile that made it impossible to tell kung gusto ba nitong mag-focus siya o ma-distract.
Pag-flip pa lang niya sa first page, her eyes started scanning fast. Some questions were easy, things she recognized instantly. Others tugged at the edges of her memory, answers she wasn't sure she could pin down.
Pens scratched softly against paper. Pages flipped. Tahimik ang buong room, pero hindi iyong katahimikan na payapa—parang may bigat iyong silence, full of focus, tension, and quiet panic.
Halfway through, Miss Herrera began pacing between the rows. Her heels clicked softly against the floor, stopping here and there para silipan ang mga sagot ng kanyang mga estudyante. Kairi felt her chest tighten the moment those steps slowed near her. Here she goes again.
She kept her head down, letting her hair fall a bit forward para hindi obvious na kinakabahan siya.
She pretended to focus by writing neatly, making it look like she didn't care.
Miss Herrera leaned slightly over her desk, her gaze scanning her answers.
Wala namang malaking pagbabago sa expression nito—no clear approval, no disapproval—but that slight curve sa labi niya, that teasing calmness, made Kairi's stomach twist. Parang alam nitong kinakabahan siya and she was doing it on purpose.
Kairi shifted slightly, tilting her arm para matakpan nang kaunti iyong sagot niya. Their eyes met for just a second. That glint—half taunt, half calm—flashed in Miss Herrera's eyes before she straightened up and walked away as if nothing happened.
Kairi swallowed hard, feeling the warmth rise to her cheeks.
By the time she reached the essay part, sumakit na talaga iyong kamay niya. She forced herself to keep writing, pausing only to stretch her fingers before pushing through the last few paragraphs.
When the hour finally ended, Miss Herrera's voice cut through the silence. "Pens down."
Kairi exhaled deeply, feeling her pulse still uneven. Habang kinokolekta ang mga papers, she kept her eyes fixed forward, refusing to look up.
Pagkatapos tumunog ng bell, they were finally released for break.
"Grabe," Maya groaned, rolling her shoulders. "That second essay almost killed me. I swear, my brain just died. I was writing pero hindi ako sure kung may sense pa ba mga pinagsusulat ko."
Zoe laughed, pero halatang pagod na rin. "Same. Nasa conclusion na ako and realized na inuulit ko lang pala iyong introduction ko. Baka isipin ni Miss Herrera, I only studied one page."
Her mind was still looping back sa exam, replaying every line she wrote that might've been too weak, every term na baka mali ang pagkaka-define.
"Ang tahimik mo," Zoe said, nudging her arm lightly. "Come on, Kai. You definitely nailed it. Ikaw kaya ang pinaka-prepared sa lahat."
"Prepared, yes. Confident, no," Kairi muttered.
Maya tilted her head, squinting at her. "Which means you probably did better than both of us combined."
Kairi only hummed in response.
Pagdating nila sa courtyard, they settled under the shade, their things spread around in the grass. Snacks were opened between them. Review sheets were scattered. It wasn't serious studying anymore—more like pretending to review just to calm the nerves.
Kairi spread her notes across her lap, her pen moving quickly as she wrote small reminders sa gilid ng papel. Pero paulit-ulit ding nawawala ang focus niya.
Her pen stopped mid-word.
And just like that, tinamaan siya ng realization—that might've been the last time she'd sit in Miss Herrera's class.
The last time she'd watch her standing sa harap, calm and composed, and with exam papers in hand.
After today, after this week, wala ng susunod na morning or afternoon kung saan papasok siya sa classroom at makikita si Miss Herrera waiting by the desk.
The thought pressed heavy against her chest. She tightened her grip on the pen. What happens now? After graduation? When there's no reason left to see her? When she's no longer her teacher?
Pero naalala niya iyong kagabi—how Miss Herrera had ruffled her hair so gently. Naalala rin niya iyong halik, iyong tahimik na certainty ng bawat galaw, at iyong boses nitong may halong lambing at assurance.
It steadied her.
Maybe this wasn't really an ending. Maybe it was just shifting into something else.
Wala na sila sa classroom after this, pero hindi ibig sabihin na wala ng kahit ano.
Miss Herrera had been clear—she didn't want her hiding, didn't want her pretending.
And if that was true, then maybe may naghihintay pa para sa kanila.
Something different, maybe even something better.
Her chest loosened as the tightness was replaced with something softer, lighter.
Kairi exhaled softly, pulling herself back to her notes. She underlined another line in the margin, then smiled faintly to herself—not because she was confident about the exam, but because for the first time, she felt ready.
Whatever it was that came next, whatever form it took, she wanted to meet it head-on.
