Journal Entry 4
Zaskja Stormsson
My To future me,
I feel like this is the first day of your new life, even though it’s just the first entry in a brand-new journal.
One you will share with no one. Not even with your future mate. This repository of secrets will belong to you and you alone.
All right… Referring to myself in the second person is odd, so back to first-person.
Although I’ve stayed home for the past three days to avoid bumping into the wolf I used to my male cousin, between Saga and Mor, I’ve been apprised of all that’s happening. Like Saga predicted, word in the valley is that her oh-so-magnanimous brother has agreed to take Nika Krosson as his mate.
Surprise, fucking surprise.
If only I could open a portal and slip through. (Wouldn’t that be convenient?)
Since I can’t, I had to come up with another plan. One that’s neither foolproof nor easy but that should get me across the heavily guarded pass: I’ll be stowing away on one of the sledges heaped with provisions that the Vales haul into the Wilds in case the Myrknótt hunt isn’t fruitful.
I did consider locating a breach in our mountain ramparts to slip through, but save for the pass, the flank of the mountain is so steep and slick with ice that I’d plummet to my death in either the Wilds, or worse, in the rabid North Sea.
The only way out of Clan Vale’s territory is the pass. Or a ride on one of those dragons that sometimes darken our sky, but since they can’t land to pick me up, that isn’t exactly feasible.
And not because we’re at war with the Sons of Odin, because we’re not. The reason the dragons and vampyrs don’t approach is because of the wards that the five Alphas have drawn around our valleys with their magical piss.
Yes, piss. (I wouldn’t mind having some magical urine right about now. Oh, the walls I’d enclose myself with. Most of them to repel Nordin.)
Anyway, back to the dragons.
How wild is it that I’m about to see them up close and personal? And possibly a vampyr…
Maybe I should be scared, but the thought of leaving the North is far too exhilarating. Soon, I’ll know all the origin stories. Soon, I’ll meet my ancestors. Perhaps one of them will see me as someone worth “touching.”
Oh, to have magic… And then to return to this valley and shove it in you-know-who’s face.
The future is looking bright!!! (Yes, this deserves a ridiculous amount of punctuation.)
Affectionately mine,
Zas
