Chapter 36

Chapter Thirty-Six

Eve

I can't tear my eyes away from Carter as he stands at the front of the classroom. His confident posture commands attention. His warm brown eyes sweep over the room, and for a moment, he locks eyes with me. A flicker of something undefined passes between us before he clears his throat and starts the lecture.

"Today, we'll discuss neurotransmitter release at synaptic junctions," Carter announces, his voice rich and engaging.

I lean forward, hanging on his every word. The way he explains complex ideas with such clarity always impresses me. As he dives deeper into the topic, I lose myself in the rhythm of his voice and his animated gestures.

Suddenly, Carter pauses, his gaze finding mine again. "Eve, can you explain the role of calcium ions in this process?"

My heart skips a beat. I take a steadying breath, hoping my voice doesn’t reveal my nerves. "Calcium ions are crucial. They trigger the fusion of synaptic vesicles with the presynaptic membrane," I begin. "When an action potential arrives, voltage-gated calcium channels open, allowing calcium to enter. This influx releases neurotransmitters into the synaptic cleft."

Carter smiles warmly. "Excellent explanation, Eve. Can you also describe the proteins involved in this fusion?"

As I answer, pride and confusion mix inside me. Why is he focusing on me? Is he showing favoritism? Or am I reading too much into it?

Throughout the class, he directs question after question at me. With each answer, I feel proud but also uneasy. My classmates’ curious glances make me wonder if we're drawing too much attention.

When the lecture finally ends, I exhale slowly, my mind racing. As much as I cherish these moments with Carter, I can’t shake the feeling we’re on thin ice. How much longer can we keep this up?

The room fills with the sounds of students packing up, eager to leave. I move slower, hands trembling slightly as I put my laptop away, the adrenaline still coursing through me.

"Well, well, well," says Vi’s familiar voice beside me. "Looks like someone’s the teacher’s pet."

I look up, my stomach dropping at her teasing grin.

"What do you mean?" I ask, trying to stay calm.

Vi leans in, her eyes twinkling. "Oh, come on, Eve. Dr. Morgan couldn’t take his eyes off you. And all those questions? You were the only student he cared about."

Heat floods my cheeks. I fumble with my water bottle. "I... it’s not... he was just..."

Vi’s eyebrows rise. "Spill it. What’s going on?"

I glance around, making sure no one else is listening. Heart pounding, I lean in and lower my voice. "We’ve been seeing each other," I admit, the words slipping out before I can stop them.

My mind races. What have I done? Can I trust her? But as I look at Vi’s wide-eyed expression, I know there’s no taking it back.

Vi’s face shifts from surprise to concern.

"Eve, are you serious?" Her voice drops. "That’s... that’s not allowed, right?"

A wave of guilt hits me. "I know it’s complicated, but?—"

"Complicated?" she says, her voice filled with worry. "Eve, he’s our professor. Don’t you think this gives you an unfair advantage?"

Her words sting. I want to defend Carter, to say how careful he is to stay professional. But I can’t deny there’s truth in her concern.

"I... I didn’t think about it like that," I admit, my voice barely a whisper. The hallway feels smaller, pressing in on me.

Vi’s gaze softens a bit. "Eve, I’m not judging you. But this could affect your career. Not to mention his."

I close my eyes, trying to gather my thoughts. When I look at her again, I manage a shaky promise. "You’re right, Vi. I’ll make it right."

The weight of my words hits me. How can I make things right without losing Carter?

Vi’s frown turns into a playful smirk. "Well, I might be persuaded to keep this quiet," she says, tapping her chin. "For one of those amazing chocolate cupcakes from the café."

Relief floods over me, and I laugh. "Deal. I’ll throw in a latte too."

"Now you’re talking." Vi links her arm with mine as we head toward the exit.

The sun is setting when I pull into Carter’s driveway. The conversation with Vi replays in my mind, filling me with worry. I take a deep breath before going inside.

Carter is in the living room, reading a medical journal. He looks up, his eyes lighting up as he smiles. "Hey, beautiful," he says, setting the journal down.

"Hi," I reply, sitting beside him, his familiar scent bringing me comfort.

He studies my face, his brow furrowing. "Are you okay? You look like something’s weighing on you."

I hesitate. "I had a talk with Vi after class," I say, my fingers tracing the couch cushion. "She knows about us, Carter."

His posture stiffens slightly, but he stays calm. "How did that go?"

"She was surprised and worried. She mentioned fairness to other students. I hadn’t thought about it from that perspective."

Carter nods, his expression serious. "That’s something we should discuss," he says, taking my hand. "Tell me everything."

As I recount the talk, Carter listens intently, his thumb tracing soothing circles on my hand, grounding me as I share my fears.

When I finish, he leans back, his hand still holding mine, eyes distant.

"Eve," he says, voice soft but firm. "I think... I need to resign from my position."

My heart sinks. "No! Carter, you can’t. Your students, your job… they mean a lot to you."

He squeezes my hand. "But you mean everything to me, Eve. I don’t want you to live with the recriminations of our affair. Besides, I can’t stay in this role if it compromises my integrity or affects other students."

"There has to be another way," I say, my voice desperate. I turn to him fully, searching his face. "We could be more discreet. Or maybe I could transfer. Don’t throw away your career for this."

"For us," he says gently, tucking a strand of hair behind my ear. "And it’s not throwing anything away. It’s making a choice."

Tears prick my eyes. "Please, don’t do this. We can find another way. Please, just... think about it a little longer."

Carter’s gaze softens, filled with love and resolve. I hold my breath, willing him to reconsider. The weight of his decision presses down on us, filling me with gratitude for his love and fear of losing what he’s built.

Carter cups my face, his thumbs brushing away my tears. His gaze is intense. "Eve, this isn’t just about my job or your education. It’s about who we are."

I swallow, hanging on his words, heart pounding.

"I love you. Because I love you, I won’t take any risks."

"But—" I start, but he shakes his head gently.

"This decision isn’t a sacrifice. It’s a choice for us, for our future. I want to be with you without any ethical concerns hanging over us."

My resistance fades, replaced by a bittersweet mixture of love and sadness. I reach for his hand, our fingers intertwining, grounding me as emotions swirl.

"I don’t want to be the reason you give up something you love," I whisper.

Carter’s grip tightens. "You’re not. You’re the reason I’m choosing something I love even more."

We sit quietly, his decision settling over us. I trace the lines of his palm, marveling at how deeply he’s become part of my life.

"What now?" I ask softly.

He pulls me close, his arm around me. "Now, we move forward. Together."

I lean into him, exhaling a shaky breath. Part of me wants to argue, but I know this is who Carter is.
