Chapter Twenty-Four - Pavel #2

“You’re running on adrenaline and fury.” She sits in the chair across from me, picking up her own plate. “Which works short-term but isn’t sustainable. So eat. Maintain your strength. Be strategic about your own well-being the way you are about everything else.”

The logic is sound, even if I don’t appreciate the interruption. I pick up the sandwich she made—simple but well-constructed—and take a bite more to appease her than because I’m actually hungry.

“Thank you,” she says quietly.

“The investigation is suspended until the immediate threat is neutralized,” I tell her. “Right now, keeping you alive matters more than verifying your innocence.”

“You still have doubts.” Not accusatory, just observant. “I can see it in how you look at me sometimes. Like you’re trying to reconcile the woman you love with the possibility that I’ve been deceiving you.”

She’s too perceptive. Sees through carefully maintained control to the conflict underneath.

“Yes,” I admit. “I have doubts. Not because I want to, but because tactical assessment demands it. Your father’s betrayal, the timing of the intelligence leaks, the message he sent you; it all creates reasonable suspicion that’s difficult to ignore.”

“Even though you want to ignore it.”

“Even though I want to believe you completely.” I set down the sandwich. “But belief without verification is dangerous, Serena. Especially in our world, where trust can be weaponized and attachment exploited.”

She’s quiet for a moment, processing that honesty. “So what happens when the war ends? When things calm down enough to resume the investigation?”

“Then we prove definitively whether you’re innocent or complicit.” The words taste bitter. “We deal with whatever that proof reveals.”

“That’s an impossible choice.”

“Yes.” I meet her gaze directly. “It is.”

Silence falls between us, heavy with implications neither of us wants to examine too closely.

Finally, Serena stands. “I’m going to shower and try to rest. You should do the same once you finish coordinating for the day.”

She leaves, and I return to work with her words echoing in my mind.

Impossible choice.

She’s right. If the investigation concludes without definitive proof either way, I’ll be forced to choose between the woman I love and the operational security I’ve spent years maintaining.

I genuinely don’t know which I’ll choose.

***

By evening, the immediate crisis has stabilized enough that I can step away from constant coordination. Mikhail has operational command, Viktor is managing security protocols, and the counterattack has successfully disrupted Kravin’s offensive capabilities.

We’re not winning yet, but we’re not losing either.

I find Serena in the master bedroom, sitting by the window with a book she’s not actually reading. The setting sun casts golden light across her face, highlighting features I’ve memorized over weeks of proximity.

“Any changes?” she asks without looking up.

“Holding. Kravin’s forces are regrouping, but we’ve inflicted significant damage.” I move to the dresser, shedding tactical gear with mechanical precision. “The war will continue, but the immediate crisis is managed.”

“Good.” She sets down the book, finally turning to look at me. “That means you can actually rest instead of pushing yourself to exhaustion.”

“Rest isn’t exactly what I need right now.” The admission escapes before I can control it.

Her gaze sharpens with understanding. “What do you need?”

You. The answer is immediate and visceral. I need the distraction, the connection, the physical proof that we’re both alive despite the chaos trying to destroy everything around us.

Saying that out loud feels like admitting vulnerability I’m not ready to expose.

“Nothing,” I lie, turning away to remove my shoulder holster. “Just time to decompress.”

I hear her stand, hear her footsteps crossing the hardwood floor. Then her hands settle on my shoulders from behind, fingers finding the knots of tension with unerring accuracy.

“You’re lying,” she says quietly. “I can feel it in how tight your muscles are. In how you’re avoiding looking at me.”

Her touch is both soothing and arousing, making it difficult to maintain the control I’m desperately trying to hold on to. “Serena—”

“Tell me what you need, Pavel.” Her hands slide down my back, tracing the line of my spine through my shirt. “After everything today, what do you actually need?”

The question breaks something in my carefully maintained composure. I turn to face her, catching her wrists before she can touch me again because if she does, I won’t be able to stop what comes next.

“I need to stop thinking,” I admit roughly. “Need to stop analyzing and just—”

“Just what?” She steps closer, close enough that I can smell her shampoo, feel the warmth radiating from her body.

“Just feel something other than this constant tactical assessment.” I pull her against me, one hand sliding into her hair while the other grips her hip possessively. “I need you, Serena. Right now. Without doubt or suspicion or any of the complications that exist between us.”

“Then take me.” Her voice drops to something breathless and wanting. “Take what you need. I’m right here.”

The permission shatters what’s left of my restraint. I capture her mouth in a kiss that’s more demand than request, weeks of suppressed want and fear pouring into the contact. She responds immediately, her hands fisting in my shirt while she presses closer.

I walk her backward toward the bed, my mouth never leaving hers, one hand already working the buttons of her shirt. She helps, tugging at my clothes with equal urgency until we’re shedding layers between kisses and gasped breaths.

When the back of her legs hits the mattress, she starts to sit, but I catch her hips and turn her around instead.

“Hands on the bed,” I order, my voice rough with need.

She complies immediately, bending forward to brace her palms against the mattress. The position puts her ass at the perfect height, her back arched in a way that makes my cock throb painfully.

I take a moment to just look—the curve of her spine, the way her dark hair falls forward over one shoulder, the smooth expanse of skin waiting to be marked by my hands.

“Pavel—” She starts to turn her head.

“Eyes forward.” I press one hand between her shoulder blades, keeping her bent over. “Stay exactly like this.”

My other hand slides down her spine slowly, feeling her shiver under the touch. When I reach the curve of her ass, I grip one cheek firmly, spreading her slightly so I can see how wet she already is.

“Beautiful,” I murmur, running one finger through her slick heat. “You’re already soaking for me.”

She makes a needy sound, trying to push back against my hand. “Please—”

“Please what?” I circle her entrance with my finger, not pushing in yet. “Tell me exactly what you want, Serena.”

“I want—” She gasps when I finally push one finger inside. “I need you to fuck me until I can’t think about anything except how you feel.”

The crude demand makes me add a second finger, working her open while my thumb finds her clit. “Like this?”

“Yes! More Pavel, please—”

I work her with deliberate precision, building her toward orgasm with fingers and thumb until she’s trembling and making desperate sounds. Just when I feel her inner muscles starting to flutter, I withdraw completely.

“Not yet.” I grip her hips with both hands, positioning myself at her entrance. “You don’t come until I’m inside you. Until you’re full of my cock and begging.”

“I’m already begging.”

I push inside in one slow, controlled thrust, filling her completely. We both groan at the sensation of her heat gripping me, impossibly tight from this angle.

“God, you feel perfect,” I manage, holding myself still despite every instinct screaming to move. “Every time I’m inside you, it’s like—”

I don’t finish the thought, just pull back and thrust again. The angle lets me drive impossibly deep, hitting spots that make her cry out with each stroke.

I set a rhythm that’s harder than careful—driven by need and fear and the overwhelming relief of having her here, alive, safe beneath me. My fingers dig into her hips hard enough to bruise, holding her steady while I take what I need.

“Use me,” I order, one hand sliding up her back to tangle in her hair. “I want to feel you come on my cock.”

She shifts her weight to one arm, sliding along my pulsing cock.

“That’s it,” I encourage, my rhythm becoming more erratic. “Make yourself come, Serena. Show me you’re mine.”

“Yours,” she gasps, her fingers moving faster.

The declaration combined with her tightening grip pushes me right to the edge. I feel her orgasm building, feel the way her entire body tenses with approaching release.

“Come,” I demand, pulling her hair just hard enough to arch her back further. “Come for me now.”

She shatters with a gasp, her inner muscles clenching rhythmically around me. The sensation destroys what’s left of my control. I bury myself to the hilt and still, my release pulsing into her while pleasure whites out conscious thought.

We stay locked together for several long moments, both breathing hard, my body covering hers protectively.

Finally I pull out carefully and turn her to face me, needing to see her expression. Her face is flushed, eyes dark with satisfaction, lips swollen from my kisses.

“Come here,” I murmur, guiding her fully onto the bed before following her down.

She settles against my side immediately, her head on my chest where she can hear my heartbeat gradually slowing. My arm wraps around her automatically, holding her close.

“Jesus.” She struggles for words.

“Couldn’t have phrased it better myself.”

She’s quiet for a moment, then, “Pavel?”

“Yes?”

“I love you. Whatever the investigation proves or doesn’t prove. Whatever happens with my father and the Kravin Syndicate and all of this chaos, I love you.”

The declaration makes my chest tighten. “I love you too.”
