104. Chapter 104

Jase rolled up the white buttonless button-down and stuffed it in his bag, a souvenir if nothing else.

Watching the ocean as the sun slowly rose, he was aware it was their last sunrise together, their last morning, their last anything, and it didn’t sit right.

It spooked him to think of waking up tomorrow in an empty bed.

While he was busy chasing after Lindsey to save his inheritance, he’d gotten kind of used to having her around.

That, and the sex. The sex. She came alive at his touch, and it made him want to blow her mind over and over again.

He’d lost count of how many times he came inside her.

Forget Chloe’s cat scratches, today his injuries were deep, internal.

His whole body ached as if they’d run a marathon at the pace of a sprint until they collapsed and could fuck no more.

Where did this woman come from and what was Graham thinking letting her go?

I’m letting her go too, aren’t I?

Three million would be more fun with someone to help him spend it.

Jase watched Lindsey collect her things from around the hotel room. He wanted to believe she was quiet because she was tired. But there was something else. What had she said? That they had a good thing?

This was a good thing. A damn good thing. That didn’t mean what she wanted it to mean. Besides, they’d probably fizzle out after a few days, a few weeks, tops. No one could maintain this pace forever.

Lindsey didn’t try luring him back to bed to keep him a little longer. There wasn’t a hopeful gleam in her eyes that she’d be the one to finally make an honest man out of Jase Young.

He reached for her as she passed by the bed. She wouldn’t look him in the eye.

“Hey,” he said.

Then nothing.

Nothing.

His tongue was absolutely tied on all the things he wasn’t used to saying. He remembered the Grand Canyon, how close they’d come a few days ago without stopping. She’d said she had never been there. There were beautiful views on the North Rim Jase wouldn’t mind showing Lindsey if she wanted to go.

Bad idea. Who knew how he’d feel once the check was in his hand? He couldn’t promise the Grand Canyon when he couldn’t even talk about tomorrow.

Tell her I’ll take her home.

Would she want to ride all the way to Ohio on a bike? Wasn’t that dragging out the inevitable?

She finally looked at him. She was waiting for him to speak, and still nothing. Jase licked his lips and willed something—any-fucking-thing—to come out. It was never this hard with Chloe or Denise or anyone. Just say—

Say I want more time.

Jase kissed her on the forehead and drew her into his chest. She hugged him back, then grabbed her shoulder bag and left the room in a big damn hurry.
