Chapter 10
The animal burgers were freaking delicious, and the dirty fries—don’t even get her started on how amazing those fries were. The conversation while they ate was light hearted and fun. Blythe found herself trying to find a single memory of Max making her laugh. There wasn’t one. They, of course, had some chemistry and a good time; he made her feel like a princess…until he didn’t.
“You made dinner, now I can help clean it up.”
She stood and layered the two plates before rinsing and placing them in the dishwasher, then put everything else away in the fridge. Justin tried to help, but she insisted. He sat as she moved around the space and laid a dry towel over the farmhouse sink as a finishing touch.
When she was done, Justin motioned his head toward the main room, where the couch and television were set up.
“I’ve got a big binder full of DVD’s. Wanna pick one?”
“Hell yeah, I do!” Blythe scurried through the opening and sat on the rug in front of the entertainment center.
Justin pulled out a black, three-ringed monster. It was so full, she thought the zipper should’ve popped off.
“You go ahead and pick something good. I don’t care what it is. I’m going to go fix our dessert.”
She watched him jog past her, back into the kitchen. She couldn’t see what he was doing from the floor because the big sectional couch was sitting behind her, blocking her view.
“Is your shirt still on? Or are you planning to start licking and spanking things?”
“Why don’t you pop your head up and see?”
Everything inside of her was screaming at her to stand up. “You’re teasing me, cowboy…”
“Your loss, sugar.”
Blythe was beaming from where she sat. She’d never been on a date this fun in her entire life. He couldn’t help himself. He was shameless and witty and… Shit. Was he like this with every girl he made dinner for? Did he make dinner for other girls? Any man who flirted like that had to have practice. Damnit .
Justin came around the couch holding a big, black bowl. “Now, don’t think I’m lazy. This popcorn took a lot of effort, okay?”
Blythe peeked into the bowl as he lowered it for her to see. It was covered in white chocolate with M like a cloudless night sky with millions of stars. She felt like the piece of his heart he never knew was missing—slipped right back into place.
