Chapter 19
“Hey, how can I help you guys?” The blond-haired, blue-eyed worker asks us. His name tag reads Michael.
I look up at him. “We’re looking into upgrading our phones,” I say, trying to figure out who he is because he looks familiar.
“Okay. Come over here and we’ll get you guys hooked up.” He turns toward a table with chairs.
I pull out a chair and sink into it, sighing softly as I sit because this is the first chance I’ve had to sit all day. After a long day of baking, my back feels stiff and sore from hours on my feet, and even sitting down makes my back ache.
I give him my number as he looks over our account. I’m still trying to figure out how I know him. He looks between us and says, “You guys can get the newest iPhones. Depending on the condition of your phone, you might be able to trade in your old phones to get some credit.”
Zay chuckles and pulls his phone out of his pocket. “I doubt this will be able to get traded in.”
He grabs the phone out of Zay’s hand. “Dang, man, what happened?”
Zay shrugs his shoulders. “Work.”
The same one-word reason he gave me. He still hasn’t expanded on exactly what he did to it at work. But I haven’t begged for more answers.
Last night after having sex, we cuddled up in bed together and fell asleep in each other’s arms. Something that hasn’t happened in a while.
I remember always falling asleep in his arms when we were first dating.
But it seems like it was always something we did in the young, giddy stages of love.
Now, I need my sleep and sometimes even his heavy breathing gets on my nerves.
I guess over time, or maybe with age, you just need your sleep in the way you need it. But last night was nice and different.
I hand him my phone. He sets Zays down and inspects mine. “Yours, I could give you eight hundred for it.”
“Oh, nice,” I say.
He sets my phone down and points to the iPhone section. “Do you want to look at what you guys would like?”
Zay and I both go over and look over the phones. I look through all the colors they have. As if it matters. I always have a case on it and that blocks the original color from being seen.
After deciding, we let Michael know, and he starts on the process of the trade-in and new phone purchases.
“You look familiar,” I say as I look over at him.
He raises his eyes from his computer and looks between us. “I was going to say the same thing about you two.”
I look over at Zay. “Does he look familiar to you?”
He nods with the corner of his lips turned down.
“What school did you guys go to?” he asks.
“Mountain High School. You?” I say, leaning back into my chair.
His brows shoot up. “Okay. I went there too.”
“Hmm,” I say, thinking back to our high school days.
He continues to type as he talks to us. “Who did you guys hang out with?”
“Him,” I say with a giggle, tilting my head over to Zay. “And Rya and Ezra. Do you know them?”
He raises his head and looks between us two. “Ohhh.” His eyebrows raise. “Okay. I remember. You four were always together.”
I giggle. “Yeah. We were.”
“I have a sister, Michelle.” He pauses. “She was in your guy’s grade, and I was a year younger.”
My mouth parts. “Oh, Michelle. Yes. I remember her.” The resemblance of him and Michelle are now hitting me. Blond hair, blue eyes. These two have the brightest blue eyes I’ve ever seen. They were also very close, always hanging out. “How is she?”
“She’s good. Married. Two kids. You know,” he says, shrugging his shoulders, typing at his computer. “Do you guys have any kids?”
I shake my head. “No. Not yet. What’s new with you?”
His lips go tight, and he shakes his head. “Nothing really. Just work and school. Still trying to figure out what I want to do with my life.” He chuckles and looks up at us. “So, you two tied the knot?”
We both nod our heads as we look at one another with a slight smile on both of our faces.
“Yeah, I remember you guys always being together. We all thought you four had some type of foursome going on,” he says as he chuckles.
We chuckle alongside him because it’s not the first time we’ve heard this.
“How are Rya and Ezra? Are you guys still close to them?” he asks.
“Yup. All four of us are still best friends.” Zay says, emphasizing best. “Rya and Ezra are married now.”
“Oh, no way,” Michael says. “That’s cool you guys stayed close.”
All three of us continue talking about the old high school days as we wait for my old phone data to be transferred over to the new one. He gets Zay’s phone connected and his data back onto his new phone.
It’s nice to run into people you went to school with and catch up on how they’re doing. It brings up a lot of nostalgia. Makes me happy from all the memories we had, especially knowing most all our memories are with the four of us and continue to still be.
