Chapter 39

Aditi's Perspective

As we settled into our seats, a sense of lightness washed over me. The weight of earlier compliments and attention had faded, replaced by a warm glow of friendship and camaraderie. I glanced over at Kabir, who was seated just a few rows ahead. He was laughing with Raghav and Aditya, but I could see the slight tension in his jaw, a sign that the jealousy was still simmering beneath the surface. There was something undeniably sexy about the way he carried that jealousy—it made him appear more rugged and fiercely protective.

On my left, Raghav leaned in, flashing a grin that was equal parts charming and mischievous. "You know, Aditi," he began, his voice low, "I'm really starting to think you should join a modeling agency. You've got the looks, and that saree? Wow!"

I laughed, playfully rolling my eyes. "Thanks, Raghav, but I think I'll stick to my studies for now."

Aditya, on my right, chimed in, his tone teasing. "Oh, come on! You should take advantage of your beauty. Just imagine—Aditi, the next big thing! You'd leave everyone in the dust."

I shot him a playful glare. "And what about you, Mr. Future Superstar? You'd be left behind, wouldn't you?" My words were light, but there was a spark of flirtation in my tone.

Aditya smirked, leaning back with an exaggerated flair. "I think we both know I'd shine brighter. But if you ever need a partner for those modeling gigs, you can count on me. Just imagine the headlines: 'Aditi and Aditya, the Power Duo!'"

I chuckled, my heart racing a little at the idea. "As long as I get top billing, I'm in!"

Raghav leaned closer, his voice dropping to a conspiratorial whisper. "Arre, tune meri bhabhi nahi banna kya? Kabir is jealous." His expression was both playful and curious, as if he was trying to gauge my reaction.

I nodded slowly, a smile creeping onto my lips. There was something about the way Raghav teased that made me feel a rush of excitement. The idea that Kabir's jealousy was evident to others only made me more intrigued by what was brewing between us.

The auditorium buzzed with excitement as our teachers announced that all the twelfth graders would be doing a ramp walk. I felt a mix of nerves and thrill surge through me. It was one thing to dress up and look pretty; it was another to strut down a ramp in front of everyone. But the thought of doing it alongside my friends, especially Kabir, gave me a confidence boost.

As the music shifted and the lights dimmed, I took a deep breath, reminding myself to own the moment. I glanced over at Kabir one last time. He was looking directly at me, his expression a mix of encouragement and intensity. I felt my heart race.

We lined up, anticipation crackling in the air. I could hear the murmurs of excitement from the audience, their whispers mixing with the rhythmic beat of the music. Finally, it was my turn. As I stepped onto the ramp, my heart pounded, and I focused on the crowd, trying to exude confidence and grace.

With each step, I felt more alive. The fabric of my saree flowed elegantly around me, catching the light. I noticed familiar faces cheering me on—friends and classmates who were as excited as I was. But the moment my eyes met Kabir's again, I felt a jolt of energy. He looked incredible, his strong frame radiating charisma. His eyes held a blend of pride and something deeper, something that made me smile despite my nerves.

After the ramp walk, we gathered back together, and I felt a rush of exhilaration. "How was that?" I asked Raghav and Aditya, my heart still racing.

"Fabulous!" Raghav declared, grinning widely. "You were like a queen up there!"

Aditya leaned in, his gaze playful. "But I think someone was a little jealous, eh, Kabir?" He glanced over at Kabir, a knowing smirk on his face.

Kabir chuckled, but there was a hint of seriousness in his eyes. "Maybe I was just admiring the talent," he replied, a playful edge to his voice.

The teachers then announced the titles for the ramp walk. "And the titles for Mister and Miss Overachiever go to... Aditi and Kabir!"

The auditorium erupted in cheers, and I couldn't help but laugh, a mix of joy and disbelief coursing through me. I turned to Kabir, who was grinning widely, his eyes sparkling with pride. "We did it!" I exclaimed, my voice filled with excitement.

"Of course we did! You were amazing up there," he replied, his gaze softening. Our eyes held for a moment, and I felt a rush of warmth.

Once the ramp walk concluded, the atmosphere shifted to a full-blown dance party. The music pulsed through the auditorium, and we all jumped onto the stage, letting loose and celebrating together. I danced with my friends, the laughter echoing around us, and every now and then, I would catch Kabir's eye across the crowd. His gaze held a mix of admiration and something else—something that felt like a promise.

Aditya slipped up beside me, a cheeky grin on his face. "So, Miss Overachiever, do you think you can outshine me on the dance floor as well?"

Suddenly, Kabir pulled me back against him, his strong arms encircling my waist. The butterflies erupted in my stomach as I turned to see his familiar, playful smirk. "Aditya, keep your moves to yourself. Aditi will be dancing with me."

My heart raced as Kabir guided me to the center of the stage, our bodies moving in sync with the music. I could feel his warmth radiating off him, and I couldn't help but smile up at him. "Wow, someone is feeling possessive tonight," I teased.

Kabir chuckled, his eyes sparkling. "Maybe I am. Just a little."

As we swayed to the music, I couldn't shake the feeling of intensity that surrounded us. The laughter of our friends faded into the background as Kabir leaned down closer to my ear, his breath warm against my skin. "Why do you do this?" he asked, his voice low and slightly serious.

I raised an eyebrow, playing coy. "Do what?"

"Make me jealous," he reiterated, his eyes locking onto mine with an intensity that sent shivers down my spine.

I paused, caught off guard by his question. "I don't know... maybe because you look sexy when you're jealous," I mumbled, my cheeks flushing.

"What?" He leaned in closer, trying to catch my words over the pulsating beat of the music.

"Because you look sexy!" I repeated, louder this time. The confession spilled from my lips before I could even process it fully.

A flicker of surprise crossed his face, quickly replaced by a playful grin. "Oh really? So you like it when I get jealous?"

"Maybe," I said, a teasing lilt to my voice. "But I also want to know why you were so jealous tonight."

He hesitated for a moment, his expression shifting as he searched for the right words. "Because..." he started, but just as he was about to continue, the lights in the hall flickered, and suddenly, everything went dark.

A collective gasp filled the room as the music stopped, plunging us into a moment of silence. Rain began to hammer against the windows, the heavy drops echoing around us as dark clouds loomed outside, swallowing the last remnants of daylight.

Kabir tightened his grip on me, his body instinctively pulling me closer. "Aditi," he said, his voice a low murmur, barely audible above the sound of the rain. "Are you okay?"

"Yeah, I'm fine!" I replied, my heart pounding from both the sudden darkness and the proximity of Kabir's body. The tension hung thick in the air, and I could feel his heartbeat sync with mine.

"Looks like the storm outside is just as intense as the one brewing in here," he joked, trying to lighten the mood, but there was an underlying seriousness in his tone.

I chuckled softly, though I couldn't help but feel a surge of excitement. "Guess the weather doesn't want to let us have our fun."

The hall was still dimly lit by emergency lights, casting a soft glow over the crowd. The laughter and chatter had momentarily died down, leaving a heavy silence that felt intimate. I turned to face Kabir fully, and the darkness allowed me to see the intensity in his eyes, the way they shimmered with curiosity and something deeper.

"Why were you jealous?" I asked again, this time more directly, my heart racing with the weight of the question.

He took a deep breath, his gaze unwavering. "Because I care about you, Aditi. Seeing you with Aditya tonight... it just made me realize how much I don't want to lose you."

I felt my breath hitch in my throat, his words wrapping around my heart like a warm embrace. "Kabir..." I began, but before I could finish, the lights flickered back on, illuminating the room once more.

The energy shifted as laughter erupted from the crowd, and people began to chatter about the sudden power outage, but in that brief moment of darkness, something had shifted between us. The playful banter had morphed into something real, something significant.
