Chapter 41

Leo

THE WAVES

There’s a beach

Somewhere

Where the wind blows a Fanta can across the pebbles.

The sea’s not blue

It’s like Tupperware

Cloudy

Streaked and stained

But it makes sense

The waves come in

The wind brings them in

Constant

They don’t wash anything clean

But when they hit

They’re so loud –

Louder than the hum

I carry in my ribs

Louder than the spin of it

The static

The ache

From trying too hard to feel nothing

Cos it’s big that thing

It’s big

But for a minute it’s quiet

Not in the world

Not on the beach

Just in me.

And I want them forever –

I want the chaos of the waves To slam into me

To keep it quiet

Forever.
