11. Felicity
Chapter eleven
Felicity
T hree days have passed since Vren offered me the Zhuri'ash ritual. Three days of thinking that have led me to a single, undeniable truth: I can't let him suffer for a connection neither of us chose but both of us feel.
The late afternoon sun casts long shadows across my apartment as I pack a small overnight bag.
My hands hover over practical items—toothbrush, change of clothes, the book I've been reading about Zexian culture.
Each object feels weighted with decision, like I'm physically packing up my choice to move forward into this weird, uncharted territory.
My resignation letter sits on my kitchen counter, the official email already sent this morning. Director Chan's response was immediate and surprisingly kind: I understand. Should you ever wish to return to public service in another capacity, my door remains open.
The finality of my decision should freak me out. Five years of career building, ditched for a connection that's barely two weeks old. Yet as I zip my bag closed, I feel lighter than I have since the bond first sparked between us—the relief of finally not fighting against my own heart anymore.
Outside, the city buzzes with its usual rhythm, completely oblivious to the life-altering transformation happening inside me.
I board the maglev train heading toward the alien housing district, watching familiar landmarks zip by.
Each station brings me closer to Vren, the bond in my chest humming like an excited tuning fork.
I practice what I'll say to him, how I'll explain my decision. Not some dramatic sacrifice, but a choice— my choice. The understanding I've reached after days of overthinking and nights of restless dreams filled with his presence.
The rain has cleared, leaving the evening air fresh and cool. As I walk the final blocks to his apartment building, golden hour light bathes everything in warm amber tones. Even the ugly alien housing complex looks almost pretty, its weird architecture softened by the sunset's glow.
I hesitate at his door, smoothing my hair and taking a deep breath. The bond pulses with nearness, a warm current flowing between us even through the barrier of walls. He must feel it too—my presence, my decision, my arrival.
My knuckles barely graze the surface before the door swings open.
Vren stands before me, his golden eyes wide with surprise despite the bond's warning of my approach.
He's wearing Earth clothes—dark jeans and a simple blue shirt that complements his purple skin.
The sight of him trying to fit into my world sends a wave of tenderness through me.
"Felicity," he says, my name sounding almost reverent on his lips.
"Can I come in?" My voice sounds steadier than I feel.
He steps aside, the movement graceful despite his imposing height.
His apartment feels different than my last visit—more settled, with small touches that speak of permanence.
A woven wall hanging with geometric patterns.
A collection of Earth stones arranged on a windowsill.
A bookshelf filled with both digital and physical texts.
The door closes behind us, and we stand facing each other in a silence that feels heavy with possibility.
"I've been thinking about your offer," I begin, setting my bag down carefully. "The ritual to suppress our bond."
His expression remains neutral, but I can feel his nervousness through our connection. "Have you reached a decision?"
"Yeah." I take a step closer to him, close enough to see the subtle variations in his golden irises. "I'm not going to let you go through with it."
Surprise flickers across his features. "Felicity—"
"I resigned from my position this morning," I continue, needing to get the words out before my courage craps out. "I won't ask you to suffer physical pain for my career or my comfort."
His brow furrows in concern. "Your work is important to you. I offered the Zhuri'ash freely, without expectation."
"I know you did." I reach for his hand, my fingers sliding naturally between his. The bond surges at the contact, a warm current flowing between us. "That's part of why I couldn't accept it. You were willing to endure pain to give me a choice. Now I'm exercising that choice."
"What will you do?" he asks softly, his thumb tracing patterns on my palm.
"Director Chan has offered to help me find a position in policy or education.
Something where my experience with alien immigration can be valuable without the ethical complications of case management.
" I smile, feeling lighter as I share my plans.
"And I've been offered a position writing cultural transition guides for new immigrants.
It seems my sudden fame from that viral video has opened some unexpected doors. "
Vren's expression softens. "You've thought this through."
"I have." I step closer still, the scent of him—something like cedar and spice—filling my senses. "These past days away from you have made something very clear to me. This bond between us isn't something I want to suppress or deny. It's something I want to understand. To explore. To fully embrace."
His free hand rises hesitantly to my face, hovering just shy of contact. "You're certain?"
I lean into his touch, his palm warm against my cheek. "I've never been more certain of anything."
The moment stretches between us, full of unspoken significance.
I've crossed a threshold—from resistance to acceptance, from fear to possibility.
The professional boundaries that once seemed so important have fallen away, revealing something far more valuable: authenticity.
The freedom to acknowledge what I truly want.
"There's something I need to tell you about the bond," Vren says, his voice low and serious. "Something important you should understand before we go further."
I nod, preparing myself for some new revelation about Zexian biology or bond formation.
"Among my people, the completion of a mate-bond is a sacred commitment," he explains. "Not a casual union, but a lifetime connection. If we continue down this path, if we allow the bond to fully form between us..."
"It's permanent," I finish for him, understanding the weight of what he's saying.
"Yes." His golden eyes hold mine steadily. "There would be no going back for either of us."
The enormity of this should terrify me. Two weeks ago, I would have run screaming from such a commitment, especially with someone from another world, another culture.
But the woman I was two weeks ago couldn't feel the golden thread connecting us, couldn't understand the recognition that resonates in my very cells when he's near.
"I understand," I tell him, my voice soft but certain. "And I'm not afraid."
Something shifts in his expression—relief, wonder, desire all mixed together. "Nor am I."
The last barrier between us dissolves. His arms encircle me as mine reach for him, the embrace feeling like coming home after a long journey. The bond sings between us, a harmony of connection that resonates through every part of me.
When our lips meet, it's gentle at first—a question, an offering.
Then something ignites between us, the kiss deepening with a hunger that's been building since that first electric touch.
His hands cradle my face with exquisite tenderness even as the passion between us builds, a contradiction that speaks to his character—fierce yet gentle, powerful yet restrained.
"The bond will strengthen with physical union," he murmurs against my lips, his voice rough with desire but eyes clear with honesty. "We should be certain."
In answer, I take his hand and guide him toward the bedroom. The setting sun paints the simple room in hues of gold and amber, transforming the utilitarian space into something almost magical. I turn to face him, my hands steady as I begin to unbutton my blouse.
His gaze follows my movements with intense focus. When I hesitate, suddenly shy despite my certainty, he steps forward.
"May I?" he asks, his voice a low rumble that sends shivers across my skin.
At my nod, his fingers replace mine, each button an unveiling, each inch of revealed skin honored with his gaze. There's no rush in his movements, no assumption. Even with the bond pulsing between us, thick with mutual desire, he moves with deliberate care.
My hands find the hem of his shirt, lifting the fabric to reveal the expanse of his chest. His skin feels warm beneath my palms, the texture subtly different from human skin—smoother, with a faint pattern like scales that catches the fading light.
"You're beautiful," I whisper, meaning it completely. The alien differences that once seemed so pronounced now appear as natural variations, unique aspects of the being I've come to care for so deeply.
His hands trace the curve of my waist, learning the geography of my body with gentle exploration. "As are you, my Felicity."
The possessive "my" sends a thrill through me, not of being owned but of being chosen. Claimed not through dominance but through mutual recognition.
We undress each other slowly, each new discovery met with wonder and appreciation. When we finally lie together on his bed, skin to skin, the bond between us flares with such intensity that I gasp, the sensation beyond physical pleasure—a mingling of souls.
"I feel you," I whisper in awe, understanding now what the bond truly means. Not just attraction or compatibility, but a merging of essence while maintaining individual identity. "Everywhere."
"And I you," he responds, his voice thick with emotion. "Two becoming one while remaining two."
His touch is reverent, attentive, following the cues of my body with intuitive understanding. Where human lovers might need guidance, the bond between us creates a feedback loop of sensation and response, each pleasure magnified and shared between us.
