Chapter 29

An interview with Adam and Abby…

You two were so special from the start, although I have to admit it was challenging to write about Adam taking up with his brother’s longtime ex-girlfriend. I had to work hard to “sell it” to the readers.

Adam: Challenging is a good word for that time in our lives, but to his credit, Grant was always very supportive of us as a couple, and we’re close to him and Stephanie.

Abby: The time I spent dating Grant feels like it was someone else’s life, not mine. He’s my brother-in-law and close friend now. Everyone ended up with the one they were meant for, so it’s all good.

And how are your five boys?

Adam: They’re positively feral.

Abby: Like Adam, his brothers and cousins still are.

Adam: We’re not as bad as we used to be.

Abby: According to whom?

Haha, I believe Abby. So Liam would be eleven and the quadruplets are nine, right?

Abby: Yes, and they’re into all the sports and Pokémon and Minecraft and—

Adam: Making messes. They’re extremely good at that.

Abby: Our house is like a locker room half the time. I’ve given up on keeping it nice for now.

You had two sets of identical twins. Have they ever been successful in switching places with each other or pranking you guys?

Adam: Not us because we can tell them apart, but we’ve had some issues with teachers who can’t tell them apart and are convinced they’re messing with them.

That must be pretty funny…

Abby: Oh, yeah, it’s hilarious.

Is that sarcasm?

Abby: What do you think? I have five McCarthy boys. It’s a wonder I’m not in the loony bin by now, and I hear it gets worse as they get older.

If Adam and his brothers are any indication…

Abby: Exactly.

Adam: I’m in the room.

LOL, so how’s business?

Abby: The Attic has done great at the Surf. I love working close to Laura and Stephanie and being at the hotel. I’ve got a great helper at the store who makes the rest of my life possible, which is ideal.

Adam: I’m still tending to all the computers on the island while doing freelance programming for a number of former clients from New York who sought me out after I sold the business.

What’s your favorite memory of when you were first together?

Adam: Mine would have to be Abby getting her first tattoos and deciding to go a little wild. It was fun to be her partner in crime during that time.

Abby: My favorite memories involve the texts he sent when he was in New York, and I was determined not to get sucked into another long-distance relationship.

Those texts were such a lifeline for me, and they made me fall all the way in love with him.

I still have copies of all of them saved on my phone.

I also want to include Adam’s incredible support when I was certain I’d never be able to have children after I was diagnosed with PCOS.

He never wavered in his belief that he’d rather be with me and have no kids than be with someone else and have a houseful of kids.

Adam: Lucky me, I got to have both.

Abby: But it wasn’t easy, and you were amazing during that time. I still struggle with the effects of PCOS, but I’m so thankful for our boys.

Did you ever hear about what became of Cal?

Abby: He married Candy and had six kids!

Oh, you called that!

Abby: I sure did.

Congratulations on your lovely life together!
