Chapter 13 #2

He had volunteered to do that from the beginning, but we shot it down because we didn’t know who was surrounding her.

We didn’t want to tip them off by any “strange” behavior she may have exhibited.

Now that she was all alone and the others were attempting to save their own hide, it was the perfect opportunity for Lincoln to “go in.”

Remy spoke next. “Kade and I will freeze the people coming out of the front door. Jaxson can cast an illusion of them being trash bags for any on lookers. I’ll carry them to the dumpsters over there and we’ll sit on them until Mercedes and Bentley transfer them to the facility.”

“Gavin, Ben, and I will go to the side door and incapacitate the three coming that way,” Jace said next.

“Mercedes and Bentley should transfer Noah, Drake, and I to the roof to head those two off. I’ll command them to go with Merci and Bent, and they can take them back to our lock up,” I volunteered.

I could tell Remy and Jace were preparing to argue. They really didn’t want me to engage with anyone. Much like Alex, I was just here to play “defense.”

Neville looked between all of us before interjecting.

“She should be safe. The two going up to the roof have the gifts of duplicating and a fear inducing. That’s probably why I was getting a lot more gift signatures then there were.

The fear inducer is a level six at best, so they can’t create fear in Blake or the others. ”

“That leaves the back door,” Troy continued. “Ben, Shiloh, Alex, and I can go there.”

“I’m coming too then,” Miranda piped up. “I’ll conceal Alex and Shiloh.”

“Everyone needs to get in place. They’ll be out in less than sixty seconds.” Herman frantically urged.

Each one of my guys either gave me a kiss or a long hug before I turned to find Mercedes and Bentley. They curved their arms toward each other in a c-shape until a portal appeared. My jaw dropped. There was no doubt it had gotten bigger. A vehicle could easily pass through the opening now.

I looked over at Gavin, and he had a proud smile on his face while Merci and Bent looked positively smug.

I felt so pleased with my best friend’s happiness.

Sure, he missed Jemmy, but he wasn’t wallowing in the depths she had thrown him in.

He was making the best of his situation, and I could see how content he was and that made me happy.

Noah, Drake and I stepped into the portal, and I immediately looked around at our surroundings.

Damn, we were high up. I was glad I wasn’t acrophobic.

The walls bordering the roof top were barely knee high.

Even if I wasn’t afraid of heights there was no way I would get any closer to them than I was.

We began heading toward the middle of the roof where it was evident that the brick structure was the only logical location for a door.

I continued to look around for any surprises that may be hiding.

I was momentarily distracted by the view.

It was rather breathtaking despite the fact that the area we were currently in wasn’t the greatest. I could see lights dotting up the mountains in the distance displaying the fact it wasn’t as densely populated as the area we were currently in.

Drake abruptly snaked an arm around my waist and pulled me close.

My surprised gaze met his before I realized he was preventing me from stepping on a pile of discarded trash.

My nose wrinkled in distaste as I realized it wasn’t just trash, he was preventing me from stepping on but used needles and empty liquor bottles.

The closer we drew to the brick structure the more I realized people were using the roof top as a hang out as sorts.

There was a stained recliner and a couch that was reminiscent of Heidi’s moms that she had gotten it in the 80’s.

My inspection was cut short as the metal door in front of us was banged open, bouncing off the wall with a clatter. Immediately I knew Neville and Herman had been incorrect with their numbers. It wasn’t just two enemies we were facing but five.

“There’s more than two on the roof!” Noah yelled into our coms.

Troy responded back nearly simultaneously making the transmission slightly garbled. “We have six out back!”

There was more chatter on the radio, but my attention was occupied with the situation on hand.

One minute the lights of the city encompassing us were casting a glow around us making our surroundings visible and the next it was like a blanket of darkness covered us.

I skidded to a stop feeling Drake’s arms tighten around me protectively.

The way we were plummeted into darkness made me momentarily disoriented and I was transported back to the time I was nearly assaulted.

I felt my breath come out in gasp and my heart rate quicken.

I tried to remember the exercises that Dr. Wong had been working on with me, but it was like my fear was debilitating me in several ways.

It wasn’t until I heard Noah and Drakes urgent commands, followed shortly after by a piercing pain on my upper arm I was violently brought back to reality.

“Right here! Right here!” Mercedes said.

It was then that I realized it was so dark that we had been separated in the chaos. I felt a hand brush my injury and yelped. I could feel my people surrounding me now, but someone had inadvertently hit my injury.

“What’s wrong?” Noah asked in concern as I felt one of my babies roll violently.

I didn’t want to worry my guys and I knew I had to play it off. They were concerned enough about me and they really needed clear heads. I had to bite the inside of my cheek to prevent myself from crying out when my son or daughter decided to do another death roll.

I doubled over and clutched my stomach. “Nothing. Nothing.” I hissed between clenched teeth.

Bentley barked in pain before saying. “We need light. Blake, can you make them stop.”

I could feel the blood flowing freely from my wound.

The agony combined with my children violently assaulting my insides made me forget all about my panic.

I took a deep cleansing breath in to focus.

I closed my eyes and tried to concentrate on the energy of the people surrounding us.

I could distinctly feel our people compared to theirs.

I didn’t bother attempting to make my command silently. “Turn the lights back on—”

My words were cut off as a bright light cut through the darkness.

I heard Mercedes cry out in alarm and felt my men attempt to pull me down when I realized what I was seeing.

Bolts of lightning were heading our way.

I was frozen in shock and couldn’t even release the scream that wanted to rip from my throat.

I held up my hands but noticed Drake had already erected a barrier around us.

I realized to late that the barrier wasn’t sufficient enough to protect us from whatever bolts of light were heading our way.

Time seemed to slow down as lightning headed my way.

I could hear the panic cries of those around me, but I was in such a deep-frozen state.

I watched as the object was inches from my skin and—nothing. Nothing happened to us.

Suddenly, the lights of the city came back on around us and I could see my belly begin to glow a cool iridescent blue.

The blue spread around me, and I felt an immense calm engulfing me.

I felt the hair on my scalp stand up on end and felt as if it began to float around me.

My feet left the ground and yet I felt no fear.

Then the glow began to expand around me.

I had to blink and blink again as I watched the blue absorb the bolts of lightning aimed our way.

Sounds slowly began to return to me and I heard the sounds of shock coming from behind me.

I turned slightly and saw the wide-eyed stares of my companions.

I saw Noah mouth a curse and turned in time to see that the blue aura surrounding us pulse a few times before releasing the bolts of lightning.

Only this time the deadly weapons weren’t aimed at our way but our assailants.

A few of them attempted to run away, while the one who clearly released the attack was fruitlessly attempting to release more. Two more of our assailants attempted to assault us further, but it was evident that something was suppressing them.

The bolts of lightning heading their way split off in six perfect bolts. One moment all our foes were standing or running ahead of us and the next they were all collapsing and twitching on the ground.

It took several seconds for my mind to catch up to my brain. I wondered if I had imagined it all. I frantically looked around to see who had assisted us, until Noah stood to his full height and placed his palm over my belly. There was still a faint glow coming from my bump.

“What in the hell just happened?” Bentley grimaced, clutching his side.

I let out a sound of concertation when I noticed the blood flowing between his fingertips and reached for him to heal him. Noah gently took his hand in mind and shook his head. “I got it.”

“Blake you’re bleeding too and did anyone else see her glow and hover like she was possessed?” Mercedes frowned gently reaching for my arm.

I tried to refute her words but as I wracked my brain, I realized I had been hovering and glowing. My mind scrambled for a plausible explanation. If no one assisted us, then who did?

Noah’s head snapped up and I knew he was going to leave Bentley to come help me. I shook my head. “I’m fine. Help Bentley first.”

The last word was barely out of my mouth before the steel door was flung open once more. Drake was at my back once more and a barrier was erected around us before we realized it was Remy, Kade, Jaxson, Pops, and Greg.

“You wouldn’t answer the coms,” Kade said breathlessly.
