Chapter 25 #3

Jace had helped them both study last night after dinner.

As usual Alex had been disgruntled while Ella took it in stride.

Alex didn’t really like school. He did well, but if it was up to him, he would have gym for most of the day.

Ella on the other hand loved school she generally didn’t even need to study.

She absorbed information quickly and easily.

Alex carelessly shrugged. “Fine.”

“I think I might have missed one math problem. Can we come over after school and hold the babies?” Ella reached over to pull some chicken tenders onto her tray.

“You sure can. Is anyone sick in your class?” Troy handed the kids some trays.

Alex shook his head. “We already told all our friends not to come near us if they are sick. Tommy has sniffles. He said it’s his allergies, but I told him I don’t care. He needs to stay away from me.”

I laughed at his matter-of-fact tone. We were lucky that it wasn’t flu and cold season.

I’m sure Tommy did have allergies considering the time of year, but I was still glad that Alex was taking it seriously.

Noah and I could heal a whole host of things, but we couldn’t heal the twins if they were to get exposed to normal infections.

I readjusted Andy and out of the corner of my eye I felt someone’s gaze on me.

I casually looked up to see Bonnie’s avarice gaze on me—or should I say on Andy.

I pretended not to notice and reached out to push Alex’s curls off his face.

It desperately needed a cut, but he was insistent on growing it out.

“Hey, buddy,” I silently spoke to him. “Don’t look now, but there’s a woman about three tables over to our right. She has long blond hair and has a pink scrub—nurse’s top—on with capybaras on them. Can you investigate her… head and tell me what’s she’s thinking.”

Alex looked at me skeptically as if I was attempting to set him up.

He had been “yelled” at several times for invading other people’s privacies.

We encouraged him to only use it in training simulations or out in the field.

We understood he was young and knew how much more important it was that he never abused his gift.

“It’s not a test, promise.” I earnestly told him before following the guys throughout the line.

Alex smiled a mischievous smile before nodding at me.

I knew it was wrong to use my brother to spy on her. It was very invasive and any other time I would be ashamed of my actions, but I needed to quiet my paranoid thoughts. She might very well be baby crazy, but I wasn’t going to ignore any of my feelings.

It was hard enough knowing it was Mike’s carelessness that led Bridgette to us that day in the studio.

Because of Mike’s thoughtlessness and philandering ways one of Horatio’s spies heard him lamenting at the bar one night.

He kept on talking about me—the bitch—and saying how I forced him out of “his” band.

A truth-extractor had extracted information from him.

They continued to follow him in the hopes of him leading them to us. Obviously, it had worked.

Pops recognized he wasn’t completely culpable, but definitely careless.

He was essentially on lock down until he completed alcohol abuse counseling as well as mandatory mental health clearance.

He wasn’t allowed out into the field until Dr. Wong or one of his staff cleared him of duties.

Everyone believed his alcohol consumption was the result of some deep mental health issues he had been struggling with for some time.

“What would you like to drink?” Lincoln asked standing beside the cooler and fountain drinks.

I smiled and shook my head at him. “I can get my own drink. Thanks, though.”

I decided on a sports drink and filled my cup up as Jaxson asked. “Do you want to sit in our usual seats?”

I thought about it for a split second. “Our table” was in close proximity to Bonnie’s and I didn’t want to be anywhere near her until I discovered what her deal was.

“Can we find someplace else?” I asked.

Gavin gave me a quizzical look. “Terrance and Marcel are in the corner over there. We can stop by there.”

He now had Addison tucked into his chest, his broad hand spanning nearly her whole body.

It was still so surreal to see how tiny my twins were.

Despite their tiny size they were strong little buggers.

My little girl was attempting to lift her head to peer up at one of her favorite people in the world.

He really was going to be a great daddy.

I couldn’t help but notice how other women seemed to be transfixed by him as well.

Only my gaze was more admiring whereas, their looks were more on the lustful side.

If Sierra wasn’t longingly looking at her desserts, I’m sure she would be scowling at them all.

We all started heading toward Marcel and Terrance’s table, while Alex slid up next to me.

“Her thoughts are—weird,” Alex’s small voice piped up in my thoughts.

I frowned. “Weird how?”

“She was thinking about the twins, but she must have ‘felt’ me because she started to block me. She’s strong.” He responded.

That concerned me. Yes, the people that surrounded Alex had learned how to block him, but it was something we all worked on. It had been difficult and for some of our friends and family their barriers weren’t firm enough to hold him back if he was really trying.

“Thanks, little man.” I told Alex.

“Is that it?” he asked.

“For now.” I confirmed.

I didn’t want to risk his safety any further. It was evident that she knew who Alex was and what he was capable of. She had to have known he was probing, otherwise, she wouldn’t have blocked him.

We reached the table and I sat in front of my tray. Alex climbed up next to me. He looked put out by not being able to read her. Like a typical child though, he shook off his disappointment when he looked over at Andy. Alex got up on his knees to peer down at him. He grinned. “He’s awake.”

I looked down and smiled. Sure enough, my little guy was awake and staring up at me with a puzzled look. He was always so introspective. I heard people jokingly say that they believed babies had the secrets of the universe and looking in my son’s eyes, I wouldn’t be surprised.

“He is.” I agreed. “Do you want to feed him a bottle later on?”

“Can I?” Alex excitedly inquired.

I nodded. “Sure can.”

Remy sat down on the other side of me, and I remembered Alex’s and I’s previous conversation. I didn’t need to focus on my original concerns.

“Do you know where Greg is?” I quietly asked Remy.

Noah could do a background check, but who knew what or when it would come back. Greg could at least tell us what her gift was. If I was wrong about her, I would feel guilty. If I was right, I would know I did everything in my power to protect my family.

He raised a brow and I quickly told him what I had discovered. By the way he stiffened, I knew he was taking my concerns seriously. I would have to tell the others later, but for now I would make sure at least one of them was firmly by my side.

“He’s away on a trip. He should be back by next week. He’s unreachable for good reason while he’s in deep, but maybe we can attempt to reach him.”

I’m sure my face reflected my deep disappointment, but I knew there was nothing we could do about it right now. If Greg was on his mission I couldn’t ruin it. We would have to protect our family until he returned. Fingers crossed my misgivings were for naught.
