Chapter 28 #3
Their conversation was paused when Darren spoke up next. “Okay guys you’re going to put your backs against the wall, cloak yourselves and pause at the next intersection.”
Drake took point and put his back against the wall, the rest of us followed suit. Miranda had just cloaked us when a group of five intruders came laughing around the corner. “Did you see the way that boy pissed himself?”
“It was even funnier when he started crying for his mommy?”
Alex stiffened before he spoke in our heads. “They have Patrick, Nadia, Beth, Cora, Mr. Moore, Taylor, and Rick in the cafeteria. That’s where they rounded up most of our people.”
“We’ll get them next.” Kade promised grasping Alex’s shoulder.
“No, we need to get Noah next.” Alex reluctantly shook his head. “Ella said so.”
“It’s your time to shine.” Yeremi nodded at Aviv.
Aviv nodded and waited as the last person to pass before she opened up her hands and cast a net-like object at the five people that had just passed us.
It jerked them up short. It was impressive to say the least, but what awed me more so was that the net seemed to have a noise suppression on it.
Even though their mouths were opened in shock or screams no sound was emitted.
“Good job.” Lincoln praised her before Mecedes and Bentley opened up the portal.
Like before Mary was waiting for us. Our other prisoners were no longer in sight, and she seemed more than ready to care for the new batch. Aviv released the nets and they carried them away. Once we knew they were secure we continued the mission.
“Okay, turn a left and head down the end of the hallway. Once you get there enter the alcove to the right.” Darren instructed next.
“Umm, there’s nothing in that alcove.” Drake commented.
“There’s a door there. Since the cameras came back up, we’ve noticed that they’re still being utilized. We need to destroy them.” Pops explained. “We’re sending Terrance out with a team shortly to destroy the other doors.”
“Just how many other doors are there?” Ben asked.
“The ones we can see—six.” Darren answered.
We reached the alcove. “How exactly are we supposed to destroy this door?” Lincoln inquired.
I thought about it for a second before saying. “Everyone, step back.”
Everyone took a giant step back and I clasped my hands together.
I imagined the fire building in my hands.
The moment I felt my hands literally warm up I spread my hands open and extended them out toward the door.
A large burst of flames extended from my palms immediately engulfing the door in flames.
I grinned in satisfaction when I realized my gifts were back and just as strong as ever.
Within seconds the door was nothing but ashes. The smell of something reminiscent of a bonfire filled our nostrils. I frowned, hoping the stench didn’t bring the attention of the trespassers.
Drake seemed to have the same line of thinking because he said. “Let’s go.”
“Well done, Blake. Now head back down the hall toward the war room. Just be ready to pause. There’s a group of intruders near the west wing.” Darren prompted.
“Copy that.” Lincoln agreed before leading us toward the war room.
Once we reached the room Drake attempted to put the pass code in. It flashed red on us. He attempted it one more time when Pops reminded us that it couldn’t be opened while we were on lockdown.
I rolled my eyes at myself when I remembered I had my gifts back. “Jaxson, Remy, it’s us. Open the door, please.”
It took a few minutes before Remy responded. “Where was the first place I took you on a motorcycle ride?”
His question confused me, but I answered. “We visited your sister’s grave.”
There were a few beeps before the door was opened.
Remy swept me off my feet and hugged me close.
It was tight enough that I felt like he was going to squeeze the breath out of me.
He burrowed his head into my neck, peppering kisses along my jawline.
He pulled back and looked me deep in my eyes before kissing me soundly.
“It was driving me nuts that I couldn’t reach out to you and see if you were okay. How are the others?”
Once again, I was reminded of the direness of the situation.
A huge part of me wanted to panic but I knew I couldn’t.
I had to keep a clear head so I could help get my men.
“Most of our people are secure, but Noah, Jace, and Troy were captured. Ella and Yeremi think we can get Noah next. Pops, Greg, and Paul are attempting to figure out how to rescue them as we speak.”
“We have thirty-five people in here. We would need to get a majority of them to another secure location.” Remy pushed open the door.
I was rushed forward eager to hold my babies even if it was for a little bit.
Jaxson handed Andy off to Rachel and rushed toward me.
I jumped and he caught me so I could wrap my legs around his waist. He kissed me before pulling back.
“I’m so glad to see you. They have someone that’s a shape shifter.
They tried to impersonate you by calling through the intercom.
If Rachel wasn’t here, I would have opened the door. ”
I smiled at her. “It’s a good thing you were here.”
Rachel smugly grinned. “Thanks to Terrance. He grabbed me and a few other people before we could even reach the lunchroom and stowed me away here. Then he ran off to see what was going on and what else he could do.”
I tapped Jaxson’s shoulder so he could set me down before I went to Andy first. I looked around to see that woman, Bonnie—I felt off about—cradling Addison.
I kissed Andy’s forehead and rocked him gently as I assessed Bonnie.
She didn’t make eye contact with me, but I noticed the imperceptible tightening of her arms as if she was possessively hoarding her.
Yeremi rushed into the room, his eyes wide with panic. “Get the baby!”
Bonnie quickly stood. Her eyes darted in panic before a small, satisfied smile curled around her lips. Then right before my eyes she seemed to begin to fade out as if she was an illusion. I knew if she disappeared completely Addison would be lost to me.
“Stop!” I screamed. “Come back!” I commanded.
Slowly Bonnie began to rematerialize. She frowned looking around as if she realized her gift wasn’t working any longer. “Noooo!” She screamed in fury. “She’s my baby. You stole her from me.”
She attempted to run with Addison, but everyone had cut off all of her exits.
Bonnie looked like a cornered animal, and I could feel the panic radiating from her.
Before when Alex and I had attempted to read her Bonnie’s defenses were too good.
Now I could almost physically feel the desperation she was exuding.
She really really desired my baby. I had to ignore her words as I felt the Mommy bear in me rise along with my gift.
I didn’t even recognize the voice that rose from chest. “Give me my baby, now!”
I could see her struggling with my command as tears coursed down her face. “He told me you took them. They’re mine.” She whimpered.
She stiltedly handing me Addison. The moment my baby was placed in my arms I began to sob. I barely even registered the woman getting drug away as she wailed to give me back her babies.
